PROMOTING SOCIAL CHANGE

By Maria Vanessa E. Casiban

In today's world of media globalization, media has become a pillar of democratic development,
and it is the media that brings all sorts of reforms and takes decisions dependent on public opinion. It
piques the public's attention to new heights. Today, I strongly believe that information is everything; as
a result, we operate in an information culture, with the media acting as the main medium of
communication and connection with other people. We use it in all aspects of our lives, including
personal relationships, entertainment, jobs, and education. We learn a lot about social media and its
damaging impact on our mental well-being, physical health, sleep, and other stuff. However, in this
essay, I'd like to focus on the other side of the coin: how we should use social media to make a
meaningful difference.

A growing proportion of the news consumers receive, is recirculated by citizens through social
networking sites and email rather than coming directly from news publishers. The power of social media
to help companies and individuals in so many ways is the primary explanation for its apparent influence
over so many people. The power of social media to unite millions of people and promote collaboration
cannot be ignored. For example, the movement BLACK LIVES MATTER. I, as a frequent user of Twitter,
have seen this movement grow because a lot of people use Twitter nowadays and this movement has
been the number one topic for months. This just shows that over the last months, social media activity
related to Black Lives Matter demonstrations and other political topics has exploded. By liking,
forwarding, or uploading posts, an increasing number of individuals are using social media to share their
views on cultural and social issues. Another example is when the mainstream media often gets the story
wrong, perpetuating biased opinions and justifying criminals. This is when social media comes into view.
It provides a platform for them to preserve their privacy while still having a voice and sharing their
stories. It also allows supporters, and advocates to react and respond to current events, share valuable
knowledge that is often not included in live news, and use language that clarifies that the victim is
accountable for their behavior.

These examples show how social media has evolved into a platform where NGOs, companies,
and emerging digital social movements all compete to influence public discourse on the quest for social
change. The crucial thing to remember is that we are witnessing the start of a transformation. As shown
by how individuals use social media to communicate their opinions and seek to influence actions in the
search of a better society, I give credence to social media's strength to mobilize in numbers. It has
undeniably provided new ways for us as users to influence public opinion in favor of a greater focus on
social responsibility and social change.
