Introductory Speech: Self Evaluation

In my first class of Public Speaking given by Professor Walter-Brown, students were able

to comprehend different types of guidelines regarding how to give an introductory speech. The

professor made us create our own introductory speech to get to know each other. By using the

main sources of a speech: introduction, three main ideas and conclusion and by incorporating an

object with which we identify and use it as our visual aid, I managed to create my own speech,

which I was very nervous about.

In order to start my first part of the speech, I had to take a deep breath and calm down a

bit before starting as I did know by excellence about my topic, which was me. I decided to

incorporate a quote that would open my introduction: “travel at your own pace, you will get

there” and I finished it by giving the name of the author. By opening my introduction with a

quote related to my object, I managed to get the public's attention and thus keep them motivated

during my presentation. I continued narrating a bit of myself to begin my three main points, but

first, I introduced my object and used my visual aid, the wooden turtle.

For this second part, where I should mention my three main points, I felt a lot of visual

pressure, but I managed to channel my objective and use the breathing techniques that we

discussed in class. It should be noted that I had to observe the screen several times since I felt

very nervous, however, I did not fix my eyes on my notes to avoid distracting my audience. My

three points were based on characteristics of the wooden turtle: its strong armor, its slow steps,

and its perseverance in the goal. This is how I managed to unite my personal experiences and

give examples of them using characteristics of my object.

As for the last point, the conclusion to my speech, I made a short summary of my main

points and showing my visual aid again, I finished my presentation. By this part I was already

feeling calm and owning my topic; However, I would have liked to add a personal touch to

connect even more with my audience such as laughing or setting an example that touches the

public's feelings.

To conclude my self-evaluation, the use of the general points of a speech gave me the

opportunity to present myself better and thus get the public's attention as well as knowing how to

canalize my doubts and fears… nevertheless, for future speeches, I will know how to better

channel my nerves and attract the public's attention.
