Matching Hyperbolas Activity Guide

This document provides instructions for an algebra activity involving matching hyperbola graphs, equations, and information cards. Students are asked to remove all cards that are not hyperbolas and then try to match the remaining cards. The document includes discussion questions about the properties of various hyperbola equations. It also provides notes on key properties of hyperbolas like the center, orientation, vertices, and asymptotes to aid students in the matching activity.

Unit 12 – Conic Sections

Day 6 – Match Hyperbolas

Bell Work: Pick up a set of cards and work with your partner to follow these steps:

1. Remove the four title cards and the 8 formula cards and discard them.
2. Separate the remaining cards into 3 stacks: graphs, equations, and
information.
3. Remove and discard all parabolas, circles, and ellipses from each stack. Only
hyperbolas will remain, there should be five in each stack.
4. Make some observations about the hyperbola cards and write them here:

5. Try to match them.

While you are waiting for everyone to finish, discuss these with your partner:

y=x +2 y =- 3 ( x−1 ) +2

Vertex?

Opens?

( x+1 )2 + y 2 =16 ( x−3 )2 + ( y+1 )2 =9

Radius?

( x−2 )2 ( y +1 )2
+ =1

( x +3 )2 ( y−1 ) 2

Notes: Now for HYPERBOLAS:

Now, Look over your matching of the hyperbolas and raise your hand to
check.
