planets (S6ESIVg-h-6)
a. Identify outer planets of the solar system.
b. Describe the characteristics of outer planets as to their distance
from the sun, size, temperature and period of revolution.
c. Arrange the outer planets of the solar system according to their
distance from the sun, size, and temperature.

III. Instructions: This activity sheet focuses on comparing planets of the solar
system—outer planets. Read the directions carefully and answer
what is asked.

IV. Activities:

Guide:
The second classification of planets in the solar system is called the
outer or Jovian planets. These planets are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and
Neptune. There are many things you can discover about these planets
while doing these activities.

Directions: Read the paragraph below to get information about outer planets.

S6ESIVg-h-6
Jupiter

Jupiter is a large planet having a diameter of 428, 400 km. or 88, 730 miles.
it's the fifth planet from the sun, at a distance of about 778 million km. or 484 million
miles. It's the fastest rotating planet for it takes only 9.8 Earth hours every day. It
takes about 11.9 Earth years to travel round the sun. it's composed of hydrogen and
helium and other gases. Its temperature is -148 Celsius. The large red spot you'll see
could be a storm. It has 67 moons. (Atkinson, 2015)

Saturn

Saturn is the second largest planet with a diameter of 120, 500 km (74, 900
miles). It's about 1.4 billion km. (886 million miles) off from the sun. It takes 29.5
Earth years to complete its revolution and 10.7 Earth hours for its rotation. Its
temperature is about -178 Celsius. Its atmosphere is created of hydrogen and
helium. It 53 moons. Saturn is understood due to its 7 rings with several gaps and
divisions between them (Atkinson, 2015).

Uranus

Uranus is about 2.9 billion km. (1.8 billion miles) away from the sun, and its

S6ESIVg-h-6
diameter is about 51, 120 km. (31,763 miles). It takes 84 Earth years to finish its
revolution around the sun and 18 Earth hours rotation on its axis. It’s the coldest
planet in our solar system with a temperature of -216 Celsius. The sun never rises
nor sets in this planet. Uranus has 27 moons. It has faint rings; the inner rings are
narrow and dark and the outer rings are bright (Atkinson, 2015).

Neptune

Neptune is that the eight and farthest planet from the sun, at a
distance of about 4.5 billion km. (2.8 billion miles). Its diameter is about 49, 530 km.
(30, 775 miles). It takes 165 Earth years to end its revolution and 16 hours for its
rotation. Its temperature is -214 Celsius. It has 13 moons. It is classified as ice giant.
It has six rings. Its atmosphere is made from hydrogen, helium and methane
(Atkinson, 2015).

Common questions

Inner planets, or terrestrial planets, are primarily composed of rocky materials with solid surfaces, whereas outer planets, or Jovian planets, are mostly gaseous with no defined solid surface. The inner planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars) have fewer moons and are smaller in size. In contrast, outer planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune) are larger, have many moons, and are characterized by thick atmospheres mostly made of hydrogen, helium, and other gases. These differences result in varied environmental conditions and geological features across the two groups .

Mars' orbital period significantly impacts its seasonal changes, lasting 687 Earth days, almost twice as long as a year on Earth. This longer period means each Martian season lasts about twice as long as those on Earth, affecting climate stability and temperature patterns. The eccentricity of Mars' orbit also leads to variations in solar heating, amplifying seasonal temperature changes compared to Earth. Consequently, Martian seasons are more extreme, with longer cold winters and more extended dry summers, challenging potential habitability .

Mars is known as the 'Red Planet' due to its reddish appearance, primarily caused by iron minerals in the Martian soil that oxidize or rust, giving it a red hue. Dust storms and wind erosion spread this iron oxide dust across the planet's surface, amplifying the red coloration seen from afar. This appearance is one of the major characteristics distinguishing Mars and impacting its study and exploration focus .

The inner planets of the solar system are Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars, known as terrestrial planets due to their rocky surfaces. Mercury is the smallest with a diameter of 4,879 km and temperatures ranging from 173 to 427 degrees Celsius; it has the shortest orbital period at 87.97 Earth days. Venus, slightly smaller than Earth at 12,104 km, is the hottest at 462 degrees Celsius and has an orbital period of 225 days. Earth, with a diameter of 12,760 km, supports life and has a mild average temperature of 14 degrees Celsius, taking 365¼ days to orbit the Sun. Mars, known as the Red Planet, is 6,787 km in diameter with temperatures from -153 to 20 degrees Celsius, taking 687 days to orbit the Sun .

The size of inner planets significantly influences their atmospheric conditions and geological activity. Larger planets like Earth and Venus have enough gravitational strength to retain substantial atmospheres, which contribute to weather patterns and surface conditions. Earth's atmosphere supports life and regulates temperature, while Venus' atmosphere causes extreme greenhouse effects. Mars, being smaller, has a thinner atmosphere, leading to more significant temperature fluctuations and dust storms but less geological activity compared to Earth. Mercury, the smallest, has almost no atmosphere, leading to temperature extremes and minimal geological change .

Atmospheric composition plays a critical role in defining the climates of Mars and Earth. Earth's atmosphere, rich in nitrogen and oxygen, supports a moderate climate and life due to its ability to retain heat via greenhouse gases like CO2 and water vapor. This balance enables stable temperatures. Mars, with a thin atmosphere predominantly composed of CO2, experiences harsh temperature variations with colder averages and lacks substantial greenhouse effect, preventing the maintenance of liquid surface water, thus contributing to its dry and cold desert-like climate .

Mercury's lack of a substantial atmosphere leads to extreme surface temperature fluctuations, ranging from -173 degrees Celsius at night to 427 degrees Celsius during the day, due to unregulated heat loss and gain. This absence of an atmosphere also means less protection from meteor impacts, resulting in a heavily cratered surface. Mercury's lack of atmospheric pressure further prevents erosion and weathering processes, preserving geological features over billions of years .

Venus is the hottest planet in the solar system due to its thick atmosphere, composed mainly of carbon dioxide, which creates a powerful greenhouse effect that traps heat. This effect results in surface temperatures averaging 462 degrees Celsius, hotter than Mercury, even though Venus is further from the Sun. Moreover, its cloud cover reflects sunlight, maintaining constant high temperatures across the planet .

The lack of substantial moons for Mercury and Venus contributes to their unique geological histories, as moons can significantly influence a planet's geological activity through gravitational interactions that stabilize axial tilt or cause tidal forces. Earth's single large moon helps stabilize its axial tilt, maintaining a moderate climate over geological timeframes. Mars' two small moons, Phobos and Deimos, have minimal impact compared to Earth's moon. In contrast, the absence of moons on Mercury and Venus results in less stabilization of axial tilt and fewer geological changes due to tidal effects, affecting their climate and geological evolution .

The orbital distances of inner planets play a crucial role in their environmental conditions and potential to support life. Mercury, being the closest at 58 million km, and Venus at 108 million km, both have extreme temperatures; Mercury due to lack of atmosphere and Venus due to a thick atmosphere that causes a strong greenhouse effect. Earth, at 150 million km, is within the habitable zone where liquid water can exist, making it the only known planet to support life. Mars, further at 228 million km, experiences colder conditions but has features suggestive of past liquid water, indicating possible past habitability .
