STUDENT LEADERSHIP AND SHOWCASE OPPORTUNITIES IN THEATRE!
A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR:
Art imitates life. This adage has been in my heart a lot throughout the rehearsal process
of this show. Urinetown is a fictional town. A metaphysical town, if you will, like any
other town you might find in a musical. But it is also so much more than that. This show's
allegorical touch points allow us as performers and audience members alike to look at our
world with a more critical lens.
Tonight our students, staff and crew perform for you in masks in response to a global
pandemic. Wildfires, dangerous droughts, and ecological devastation ravage our country
and the world. The role of police in our communities has been brought into profound
question. The divide between those who raise the fees and those who pay them has
widened. Corporate greed, monopolies, the role of education, gender identification and
sexuality issues, and political extremism on all sides of the coin are common topics in our
very real modern world.
Thomas Malthus was an English economist and demographer best known for his theory
that population growth will always tend to outrun the food supply and that betterment of
humankind is impossible without strict limits on reproduction.
The comical, and sometimes ridiculous topics addressed in our show create an opportunity
for us to reflect. To listen. To discern. To question:
Are we on the path Malthus predicted? Are we willing to cast aside our care and
compassion for one another in the process of addressing our basic needs?
Urinetown, The Musical is a cautionary tale against extremism, albeit a delightful one. I
am comforted by the words of Little Sally. We CAN have hard times and struggles... but no
matter what, we can also have love.
