Feed and Breathe
Animal Digestive and Respiratory System
I. Complete the table by supplying the correct dietary category and feeding mechanism of the
given animals.
Animal Dietary Category Feeding Mechanism
1. Raccoon Insectivore & Frugivore Fluid Feeder
2. Tree Frog Insectivores Fluid Feeder
3. Varanus Bitatawa Omnivores Fluid Feeder
4. Loa Loa Carnivore Substrate Feeder
5. Humpback Whale Carnivore Bulk Feeder
6. Sponge Carnivore Filter Feeder
7. Aedes Aegypti Herbivore Substrate Feeder
8. Eathworm Omnivore Substrate Feeder
9. Green Anaconda Carnivore Bulk Feeder
10. Tiger Carnivore Bulk Feeder
II. Compare and Contrast the following. A scoring rubric is provided for your guidance.
1. Lungs vs. Gills
Lungs is a pair of breathing organs located with the chest which remove carbon dioxide from
and bring oxygen to the blood.
Gills is the respiratory organ of aquatic animals such as fish that breathe oxygen dissolved in
water.
Lungs helps to breathe oxygen in the air and it contain sacs connected to the outside through a
network of breathing tubes and these animals have a four-chambered heart while the Gills
helps to breathe oxygen dissolved in water and it is made up of rows of filaments through
which water continuously flow and these animals have a two-chambered heart.
Therefore, gills are evaginations of the body surface. In contrast, lungs represents invaginations
of the body surface.
2. Cutaneous Respiration vs. Tracheal System
Cutaneous Respiration or Cutaneous Gas Exchange is sometimes called “Skin Breathing”. In
fishes and amphibians, aside from acquiring oxygen using their gills, most groups of fishes have
skins which enabling them to get oxygen using their skin and that is called Cutaneous
Respiration.
Tracheal System in Insects which oxygen and carbon dioxide travel primarily through air-filled
tubes called trachea.
Therefore, I think, Cutaneous and Tracheal System is both a process in which they enable the
animals to get air or oxygen to continue breathing.
III. Briefly discuss the following questions. A scoring rubric is provided for your guidance.
Make your answers concise as much as possible and you can use illustrations.
1. Compared to an adult frog, a tadpole has relatively longer intestine relative its body size.
What does this suggest about the diet of these 2 stages in a frog's life?
The adult frogs are carnivores where they eat insects, worms and snails compared to tadpole
that are generally herbivores which means they do not eat other species or meat but only plant
material. Most tadpole eat algae and plants so they need long small intestines so the fibrous
material has more time to digest and be absorbed.
2. In the weightless environment of the outer space, how does food swallowed by astronauts
reach the stomach?
According to my research, our body has no difficulty swallowing or digesting food even in zero
gravity.
There is this called peristalsis where despite gravitational shifts, astronauts can still eat and
drink in space, it’s the same reason why we are able to swallow water even when upside down.
3. Hundreds of studies have linked cigarette smoking with respiratory disease. What do you
think should be done to reduce the risk of respiratory disturbances brought about by
smoking?
Since there are numerous of people using cigarette and they can’t stop or even lessen the use
of it, I think the best way is to reduce or change the ingredients of the cigarette, the producer
or the maker of the cigarette should change the ingredient of it so that it can’t damage the
health of the users.
