I felt glad that I work with Dr Sabariah’s student. This is because her research
field is easier to understand compare to others’ research field. Moreover, her research
field does not involve any animals for example rats. As I know, some of the post-
graduate students here dealing with the animals work, which is observe the animals
that consumed plant extracts or even need to dissect them. For me, it is cruel and the
rats are scarified for the purpose of science. I even have the opportunities to involve
myself in helping them to dissect and I learnt a lot of thing from them.
Constraints that I face during this training are lack of experience in handling
the machine. As I never have the chance to work with any machine in our campus lab,
thus I just have the knowledge about the theory of machine but not practically use it.
Moreover, the subjects that took in degree year 1 and year 2 are not fully used for the
training that I have for this three months. Centre for Drug Research, USM is more to
biochemistry and chemistry field. It is not related to biotechnology. But, Enzymology
and Properties of Matters these two subjects help me a lot.
From these 3 months of training, I realize that I have a strong ability to adapt
to new environment. I can mix well with the postgraduate students here which are
different races. They are very kind and willing to share opinions or knowledge with
me. Other than that, they give me concern and help me when I need their help.
Moreover, I am not hesitating to ask questions when I am confuse about some
procedures during the experiment. I got feedback from my supervisor and the
postgraduate students when I ask questions. I can understand more about the purpose
of doing those procedures.
But, I am very careless sometimes. I should be more being careful when doing
every single thing here. For example, the water in the sonicator may contaminate the
sample that we prepared. So if the cap of test tube drop into water, we should wash it
before cap it back. Although this seem like a minor thing, but it will affect the
accuracy of the result and sometimes we may need to redo all the preparation work
again.
For me 3 months are not enough to finish one project. It is because some of
the sample preparation works take a very long time in order to complete. In order to
get a better result for this project further work may needed.
From the beginning of all, prepare resume and an application letter to sent to
companies and waiting for their calls let me understand that find a job is not an easy
task. I become more confident to call the companies one by one just want them to hire
me. Unfortunately, most of the companies did not provide industrial training
attachment. Some of them require for 6 months interns. This challenges me for
finding a placement for myself. After these 3 months of training at CDR in USM, I
know where my right pathway is after I graduate. I believe I can get a good job after
graduate in one and half year later.
