Types Of Resistors
● The two main characteristics of a resistor are its resistance, R, in ohms and its
power rating, P, in Watts.
● The resistance, R, provides the required reduction in current or the desired drop
in voltage
● The wattage rating indicates the amount of power the
resistor can safely dissipate as heat.
● The wattage rating is always more than the actual amount of power dissipated
by the resistor, as a safety factor

[Link] composition resistor
[Link] type resistor:-
a. Carbon film resistor.
b. Metal film resistor

1
[Link] wound resistors:-
● Construction material:- Special resistance
wire is wrapped around an insulating core,
typically porcelain, cement, or pressed
paper.
● Power rating:-1W to 100W
● Applications:-The wire wound resistors
are widely used for various applications
such as:
1. Telecommunication
2. Computers
3. Audio and video equipments
4. Medical electronic equipments
5. Defense and space

[Link] composition
resistor:-
● Construction material:-Made of carbon or
graphite mixed with a powdered insulating
[Link] caps with tinned copper wire
(called axial leads) are joined to the ends of
the carbon resistance element.
● Power rating:- 1/10W, 1/8W, 1/4W, ½W, 1W
● Applications:-The various applications of
carbon composition resistor include:
1. Current limiting
2. Protection of circuits
3. High voltage power supplies

[Link] type resistors:-
A. Carbon film resistor:-
● Construction material:-The generic term
“Film Resistor” consist of Metal Film, Carbon
Film and Metal Oxide Film resistor types,
which are generally made by depositing
pure metals, such as nickel, or an oxide film,
such as tin-oxide, onto an insulating ceramic
rod or substrate.
● Power rating:- 1/4W to 5W
● Applications:-Application of carbon film
resistors include high power supplies,
X-rays, RADAR systems and laser.

B. Metal film resistor:-
● Construction material:-The construction of
metal film resistors is similar like carbon film
resistor. Instead of carbon there are a metal
and metal is a mixture of nickel, chromium,
metal glaze and metal oxides.
● Power rating:- 0.125W, 0.25W, 0.40W
● Applications:- [Link] tolerance of metal film
resistor has good characteristics.
[Link] low voltage coefficient of this resistor
has high linearity and low noise.
[Link] bridge circuit and active filter this film
resistors are used.

● Construction material:-combination of
“thermal” and “resistor”. It is made of
metallic oxides, pressed into a bead, disk, or
cylindrical shape and then encapsulated
with an impermeable material such as
epoxy or glass.
● Power rating:-The maximum power rating
of a thermistor is the maximum power
which a thermistor will dissipate for an
extended period of time with acceptable
stability of its characteristics.
● Applications:-Used in electronic circuits
where temperature measurement, control,
and compensation are desired.

● Construction material:-The resistive
element of the rheostat is made of a coil of
wire or a thin carbon film. Rheostats are
mostly wire wound Generally, rheostats are
made by winding the Nichrome wire around
an insulating ceramic core.
● Power rating:- 15 W or more
● Applications:- 1. Rheostats are used to
increase or decrease the volume of a radio
[Link] or decrease the speed of an
electric motor.

● Construction material:-The resistive
element of inexpensive potentiometers is
often made of graphite. Other materials
used include resistance wire, carbon
particles in plastic, and a ceramic/metal
mixture called cermet.
● Power rating:- 25W or more
● Applications:-The potentiometer is used as
a voltage divider in the electronic circuit.
The potentiometer is used in radio and
television (TV) receiver for volume control,
tone control and linearity control
