CHAPTER I
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Introduction
The learning process at the higher level of education is one of the critical
factors in enhancing the knowledge of the students in the particular case of
subjects. In this generation, being an extrovert is really a big issue in our society.
Wherein the researchers can relate it also in the learning style of the students.
Many students are ensure if it's more time efficient to study with a group of
classmates or on their own. Sometimes students prefer the independence and
control of studying alone. Other students need a study group to help motivate
them. In short, every student has their own learning style whether it is a self
study or a group study.
Self study is becoming more popular way to engage students with what
they are learning in class. Students have the ability to access so many resources
that now learning can happen anywhere and anytime, not just in the classroom.
Self studying is a great method students can use to enhance their learning
experience whether they are studying for a particular course or learning about a
topic for fun, by practicing self study, students are encouraged to further explore
topics they are interested in, developing stronger study skills as a result. One of
the major advantages of self study is that students can take control over their
own learning. And when students have control, they become even more
interested in learning. Students prefer to be alone are able to think about topics
more deeply and make connections between what they are learning they are
able to remember it better. According to Bosworth, "Self-study is more productive
than group study and student learn more while studying alone; they can give
proper time and concentration to their studies".
Dr. Sirajul Haq (2009) stated that the advantage of studying alone is that it
allows an individual to have an opinion of their own that is not influenced by the
thinking of their peers. This encourages the individual to be independent in
thinking hence they do not get used to basing their opinions on what others think
but what they view as the correct opinion. This will manifest itself not only in that
area of study but also in the individuals overall perspective on life issues. This
enables the individual to become a reliable person in life who is not easily
swayed by other people’s views but one who takes a strong stand to their ideas
and views. In contrast to this, studying in groups will lead to opinions that are
influenced by the views of the other group members hence one’s individual
opinion is dwarfed, which can lead to the suppression of an individual’s growth
both mentally and psychologically.
In some cases, forming study groups is a very effective strategy for
enhancing learning. This is because groups share unique insights and learn from
each other. Group members can also teach confusing concepts they understand
to other group members. Group study is particularly effective for completing
projects, developing presentations and preparing for exams. Studying in group
encourage members to think creatively and build strong communication skills
which also help in refining understanding of material. A major benefit of studying
in a group is being able to ask classmates if something doesn't make sense.
Having other students around to help review concepts can also offer a deeper
understanding of the class material. According to Anthony (2013), "The group
mentality if what I think makes it most effective . If you know that someone is
relying on you ,then you will do what you have to get the job done".
Becton Loveless stated that the benefit of studying in a group is that it
provides an excellent means for students to compare class lecture notes.
Comparing notes allows students to fill in any information or important concepts
they may have missed during lecture. Also, since everyone has individual talents
and unique insights, group members can learn from each other. Study groups
provides students an opportunity to benefit from the talents and knowledge of
the other group members.
Furthermore, Dr. Haq (2009) stated that the study method applied may be
based on the individual’s personality. Some people prefer studying on their own
while others prefer working in groups. This may be determined by their
personality with introverts preferring to study alone and extroverts who tend to be
more social preferring to be involved in a group study. Individual study may be
considered appropriate for those individual with high concentration ability, as they
will be able to maintain their concentration no matter the period of time they will
be required to cover the subject of study. However, for an individual with a low
concentration span, group work would be the more appropriate approach as the
monotony involved in studying alone would be eradicated. With the heated
debates and activities, involving different personalities the interest of the
individual will be sustained. The individual will also get a chance to contribute
and reason with his group mates and that will make him/her feel like a part of the
discussion hence enabling him/her to maintain concentration throughout.
Researchers conduct this study to help not just the students, but the
teachers as well to know the effective way on enhancing students in their
learning. And also, for the researchers to identify what effective learning style
would suit to every student's competence in learning. Self and Group Study is
productive to the students in enhancing their learning abilities, enhances student
social skills, help bolster student confidence and helps student practice
assertiveness. The researchers got motivated to conduct this study for the
benefit they will receive when this study is done. Also, the students who have
poor habits in studying became their inspiration in order to get an idea what
appropriate learning style is effective for them.
Conceptual Framework
The conceptual framework gives the viewpoint of the study.
Learning method or style plays an important role when it comes to the
improvement of the learning of students. This is worth considering topic of
today's generation. Both Self and Group Study method is a very effective
strategy for enhancing learning wherein students can also build their social life.
The figure shows the flow of the study. The first phase is the Self-Study
wherein the researchers will gather information if this method is the appropriate
leaning style for the students. The second one is the Group Study, in relation to
the aforementioned, the researchers will also study this to prove that this method
is the effective learning style for the students. The last one is the output or the
main reason why this study was conducted and where the researchers identified
and construct recommendations to solve the problem.

Select Senior High School Students in Alangilan Campus.
Statement of the Problem
This study aimed to determine the appropriate learning styles between self
and group study of selected Senior High School students in Alangilan SHS
Campus.
Specifically, it sought answers the following questions:
1. As assessed by the respondents, how may the extent of learning be
described in terms of:
1.1. Self-Study
1.2. Group Study
2. Is there any significant difference between self and group study?
3. Is there any significant relationship between self and group study?
4. Based on the findings, what appropriate learning styles may be
proposed to enhance one's learning of select senior high school
students?
Hypotheses of the study
Ho: There is no significant difference between the assessment on self and
group study in determining appropriate learning styles of the respondents.
Ho: There is no significant relationship between the assessment on self
and group study in determining appropriate learning styles of the respondents.
Scope, Delimitations and Limitations
This study encompasses the comparison between self and group study by
the students among the select Senior High School in Alangilan campus.
Data gathered were based on the administered questionnaire. Likewise,
the researchers use books from the library of the different schools. Internet was
utilized as well to support the present the study. This study focuses on the
comparison between self and group study a basis for determining an appropriate
style of the select Senior High School students in Alangilan campus.
Furthermore, the present research was delimited to Senior High School in
Alangilan campus since the population there was already enough to the demand
of the study.
This research was limited to the respondents' knowledge of the variables
being studied. Furthermore, data gathered were just based on the respondents
who were present.
Significance of the Study
The results obtained by the researcher will benefit the following:
Students. The result will provide the students with some knowledge/idea about
the appropriate learning style between self and group study. It will also give the
students a realization how self or group study plays an important role in their
lives.
Teachers/Professors. This research can be their basis on using this
method/style for the improvement of the students and the student's relationship
as well. This research will aid them their discussions regarding related lessons. It
will be easy for them to tackle topics about this research.
Administration. They can utilize the results of the study as basis for determining
an appropriate learning style between self and group study that would surely
promote the development of student.
Future Researcher. This research will become a useful reference for the
researchers who will make a plan for any related study to comparison between
self and group study a basis for determining appropriate style.
Definition of Terms
To facilitate understanding of the study, the following terms are defined
conceptually and operationally.
Benefit- According to (Merriam Webster0, it is something that produces good or
helpful results or effects or that promotes well-being advantages.
In this study, the benefit of studying in a group is being able to ask classmate if
something doesn't make sense.
Capability- According to Oxford Dictionary, it is the power of ability to do
something.
In this study, a student's capability greatly enhances a student's style of learning.
Connection- According to Oxford Dictionary, it is a relationship in which a
person, thing, or idea is linked or associated with something else.
In this study, a student's connection to his learning style chosen provides his
greater insight into his learning.
Development- According to (Merriam Webster), it is the act or process of
growing or causing something to grow or become larger or more advanced.
In this study, development is where the students can handle themselves in
studying by using the two methods, the self and group study learning style.
Goal- According to Oxford Dictionary, it is the object of a person's ambitions or
effort: an aim or desired result.
In this study, the goal is reflected in the student's assiduousness through his or
her own way of learning.
Group Study - According to thesaurus, it is a group of people who meet to study
a particular subject and then report their findings or recommendations.
In this study, Group study is particularly effective for completing projects,
developing presentations and preparing for exams.
Learning Style - According to [Link], learning styles are different modalities,
or ways of learning information. People generally have one or two ways of
learning that is more effective for them than others.
In this study, learning style is the process for enhancing the skills and capabilities
of the students. Also, this the way for enhancing the knowledge of the students.
Performance- (Oxford Dictionary), studies tend to concentrate on a mix of
research method.
In this study, performance contribute significantly in the development of
knowledge and perceptual capacities.
Self-Study - According to (Merriam Webster), it is the study of one's self.
In this study, self studying is a great method students can use to enhance their
learning experience whether they are studying for a particular course or learning
about a topic for fun.
Skills- According to Natalie Severt, skills are your natural talents and the
abilities you develop to perform a task or job.
In this study, skills to students will have to learn how to work effectively in groups
on the job, schools should teach those skills and let students practice them.
CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES
This chapter deals with a review of literature and research conducted by
local and international researchers closely related to the present study. They
formed the background and provided information that helps the researchers
conceptualize the framework necessary to the study.
Related Literature
The related literature tackled the concepts that are related to the current
study, and serves as a supporting detail for the recent study. In conceptual
literature, the researchers discussed the concepts about self and group study.
Self-Study
Karanja (2017), " Why and How Self Learning is Important". Self-learning
gives you the ability to identify problems and quickly look for effective solutions
on your own. This could be from colleagues, the internet or by exploration.
Whatever the case, challenges and obstacles do not kill your drive to get things
done, instead, they provide you with new opportunities to learn something new at
your own pace and time. You get to learn how to actively look for solutions
instead of having solutions brought to you. Moreover, you can easily adapt to
changes in the environment due to the ability to learn fast.
As students do more self-study, many become more confident learners.
They are able to see themselves as an independent person who is able to learn
new things without anyone helping them. This can be a major motivation boost
for students. Self-study allows students to take learning at their own pace,
focusing on areas they are most interested in(or want to understand a bit better).
This helps reduce feelings of frustrations, anxiety, or boredom that students may
struggle with in a classroom setting (Grade Power Learning: Enrichment
Studying, 2018).
The first module of the elective course (Students' self-education: learning
to learn across the lifespan, Sagitova 2014) is focused on designing student’s
individual educational route as one of the forms of student’s self-education. We
are convinced that designing student’s individual educational route promotes
students to learn forms and methods of self-education: students acquire the
ability to design their educational and self-educational activity, properly manage
their time, productively work with educational material and monitor the results of
work. We regard individual educational route as purposefully planned individual
educational program which provides students with the subject position of
educational activity and promotes the formation of their self-education on the
basis of psychological and pedagogical support.
Advantages to studying alone are that it minimizes distraction, allows you
to pace yourself, and can improve your focus. When you are by yourself,
distraction is minimized due to the lack of other interaction you have other than
with your schoolwork. You can take breaks whenever you feel overwhelmed, or
even read at a speed that suits you. This pacing of your own work can be
extremely beneficial to you, for no one knows you better than yourself. Lastly, the
improvement of focus that comes with studying alone is crucial. This lets you
have the flexibility to learn different sections that you personally need
improvement on as well as leave less stress on aspects you may have already
mastered ([Link])
Group-Study
Working in groups makes it possible to focus on more concepts since
multiple people can review more material than just one. Many groups decide to
assign topics to individual group members to research and study and then
provide a summary for the group. This strategy allows students to learn a lot
more, in a lot shorter time, than if they were to study each topic on their own
(Education Corner,2019).
According to Oxford Learning (Studying in Groups vs. Studying Alone:
Which is Better?) , a true test in knowing if a student understands a concept or
not is if he or she is able to explain it to someone else. Studying with others gives
you an opportunity to better understand the topic by discussing it with someone
else. Not understanding a concept and having no one around to help can be very
frustrating.
Group study can be a great alternative to studying on tough subject
matter. In fact, studying alone isn't the most productive option for some people.
Group study can help you understand tricky material. It might sound obvious, but
the more brains that you have working on something, the more likely a solution
will be found. While you can get distracted in a group situation, as everyone is
working towards the same goals and deadlines, there is less temptation to
procrastinate (UNITEC Institute of Technology, 2017).
Petress (2014), " The Benefits of Group study". Group study has benefits
that fall into the cognitive ( what we think and know) and effective (how we feel
and express our feelings). Such study enhances student social skills, helps
bolster student confidence, and helps student practice assertiveness. Group
study skills are transferable to other tasks. Learning quality group study skills
prepares students to enter expanding work arenas where teamwork is
demanded. Group study requires students to articulate what they know to fellow
group members. These group activities sharpen members' communication skills
as well as enhancing their cognitive skills. Group study validates what students
really know if they are required to articulate in the presence of others what they
have learned. When they are able to clearly articulate what they know, are able
to withstand challenges to what they know, their knowledge is reinforced and
verified. Such validation lessens stress related to examinations by lessening self
doubt about what they know.
Anil (2019), " Reasons Why Group Study is Better than Self Study". Group
Study provides you the opportunity to test where you stand with respect to
others. Through discussions with your group members, you can figure out where
you stand in a particular topic, which can act as a source of feedback and, if
required, nudge for environment. In a group, you can also learn the best study
practices that have worked for others, get motivated from the progress of others,
and, sometimes, restore your confidence by seeing that you're not at the bottom
of the heap.
Related Studies
The related studies tackled the past studies to the current study, and
serve as a supporting detail for the recent study. In research literature, the
researchers discussed the researches that supplement information about self
and group study.
Bismillah (2011), " Study Behavior (Individual vs Group Study)”, each
student has their own study habits such as individual learning and group study.
Some of them more like cooperative learning that can make study group with
their friends and can enhance students' social development as well as interest in
the learning. Some of students like individual learning that have their personal
style in learning and plan how to manage time and subject. Bismillah concluded
that both of study behavior has their own advantages to students. Individual or
self study has more advantages of students want to be more focus in study. It
can be extremely useful for individual to have other people studying with him or
her who can make sure that the individual stays focused on the task at hand.
Secondly, study groups allow the individual to compare ideas and notes about
topics that the individual understands, and more importantly, about topics that the
individual may not understand.
Arlauskiene (2015), " Students' Attitude Towards Self Study: A Case of
College Study Programmes in Social Sciences" , in recent years the significance
of quality in higher education has been emphasized, with special emphasis
placed on the opinion of students. The study analyses the attitude of college
students toward self-study assignments as a factor essential for the development
of generic competences, presently related to the widely discussed educational
paradigms, such as study-oriented learning, metacognitive study strategies, and
holistic personality development. The changes in the educational paradigms and
recent fundamental and applied research reveal the importance of student
independent work in the study process and the development of abilities
necessary for learning, the enhancing of motivation, and the promotion of
reflection and critical thinking.
Laguador (2014) from LPU-Batangas, "Collaborative Learning Approach in
an Outcome-Based Environment", collaborative learning is an approach to the
aim of student-centered classroom activities towards the attainment of the
outcome-based environment as required by accrediting and certifying bodies
and agencies of higher education. The teacher should prepare the activities
towards the attainment of the group goals. Everyone is an important composition
of the team and each member should actively participate. The learning outcomes
of the students gained from the collaborative learning serve as an essential
product in an effort to provide quality education for the future leader of the world.
According to Haq (2009), every student has different potential of capability
and according that a student adopts his pattern of study. Some students like to
have group study because they are able to enhance their not only knowledge
but also thinking ability, confidence ability during the discussion with other group
members. Besides that, they also do their individual-study. They do group study
for sharing their knowledge whatever they have read it in an individual-study.
Such students are deemed as those who are self-confident in their studies as
well as in group study.
In addition, it is also concluded that both types of learning style (Individual
Study and Group Study) is productive to the students in enhancing their learning
abilities. By having an individual study, students are able to enhance their
reading, writing and comprehensive ability and by having a group study, they are
able to enhance their rational, thinking and confidence ability during the
discussion in a group.
Lourdes M. Ferrer (2013)," Collaborative Learning: An Essential Element
in Student-Centered Instruction", current education reforms promote student-
centered instruction that develops thinking, encourages active participation, and
arouses interest to explore concepts. In reality these goals are rarely achieved
because the classroom learning environments puts heavy premium on lectures
and class discussion. The interaction skills developed in these strategies enabled
group to function effectively. The strategies used in this study broadly
encompass the essence of learner-centeredness, which fundamentally
emphasizes the act of learning together.
Bindler et. al. (2013), " The impacts of Individual and Collaborative
learning of International Tourism and Hospitality Management (ITHM) students in
LPU-Batangas", educating students about their own learning styles has benefits
that can extend beyond the walls of the classroom. To begin, matching student
learning styles with instructional styles has been shown to improve students
attitude towards learning in addition to bolstering achievement. Every single
person studies and performs in different ways, whether that to be with a group of
friends or independently. Studying is no different. In order to succeed a student
must try each option and stick to what works.
Cataluna et. al. (2016), "Group Work as an incentive for learning-
students' experiences of group work in LPU-Batangas", group work is used for
learning at all levels n educational systems. There is strong scientific support for
the benefits of having student learning and working in groups. Nevertheless,
studies about what occurs in groups during group work and which factors actually
influence the students' ability to learn is still lacking. The aim of this study is to
add to the current level of knowledge and understandings regarding the essence
behind successful group work in higher education. This research is focused on
the students' experiences of group work and learning in groups, which Is almost
non-existing aspect of research on group work prior to the beginning of the 21 st
century. A primary aim is to give university students a voice in the matter by
elucidating the students' positive and negative points of view and how the student
assess learning when working in groups.
Aclan et. al. (2014), "A Comparison of Individual and Team Learning ",
this study was designed to determine whether team or individual reward
structures have an impact on student learning. Individual and Team learning are
both frequently used in classrooms to support learning. Some students are more
comfortable with individual study. Such students may feel uncomfortable to help
others and seek help from others in any form. They thought of group study is a
waste of time and type of social gathering for gossiping rather than purposeful
study. There are also some students, who are reserved in nature. They can mix
easily with other students. There has been usually lot of conversations and
exchange of ideas within students in a group and some students can freely
express their views in front of others. However, each technique has several
different advantages and disadvantages, it is up to the students to decide which
technique will yield the best results.
Andal et. al. (2013), "Impact of Group and Self Study on Learning Abilities
of Students at the University Level". The universities around the world are
adopting various forms and patterns of teaching methods to inculcate the
students with the good understanding of knowledge in the relative course of
studies. Some universities lead students toward individual studies pattern and
some universities leads students to follow group studies approach and some
universities are directing the students to follow both pattern of studies. Hence,
students in the universities around the world are conducting their studies in
groups as well as individually.
Synthesis
The concepts that defined the self and group study as seen in the related
studies are somewhat connected to each other, it may serve as a basis for the
present study.
The list of the related studies shows that both learning style can really help
students in their studies.
The study of Bismillah (2011), Bindler et. al. (2013), Aclan et. al. (2014),
Andal et. al. (2013) and the present study focused on the same topic. The
difference is the study of Bismillah focused on the behavior of the students while
the present study focused on the appropriate learning style to be proposed to
the students for enhancing their learning. According to Bindler et. al., every single
person studies and performs in different ways whether that to be with a group of
friends or independently, their study focused on the International Tourism and
Hospitality Management (ITHM) students while the present study focused on the
senior high school students. Aclan and his members stated that, each technique
has several advantages and disadvantages, it is up to the students to decide
which technique will yield the best result. According to the group of Andal,
universities around the world are adopting various forms and patterns of teaching
methods to inculcate the students with the good understanding of knowledge in
the relative course of studies. Also, their study focuses on university students.
The past studies concluded that both of study behavior have their own
advantages to students whether it is a self or group study.
The study of Arlauskiene (2015) focused on the students' attitude towards
self study while the present study focused on both learning style ( Self and Group
Study). The students or respondents involved in the past study is the college
students while in the present study, the students involved is the senior high
school. But both study can really help students in their way of learning.
The study of Cataluna et. al. (2016), Laguador (2014) and Ferrer (2013)
focused on Collaborative Learning or Group Study while the present study
tackled about self and group study. According to them, collaborative learning is
the best learning style for the students. But both learning style has its advantages
and disadvantages to the students, it may depend on them what learning style
he/she is capable of.
The study of Haq (2009) and the present study is almost the same. Both
study tackled about the two learning style which is the self (individual) and group
(team) study (learning).Haq also concluded that both types of learning style is
productive to the students in enhancing their learning abilities which is, it is also
the focus of the present study, to identify the appropriate learning style for the
students.
CHAPTER III
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This chapter encompasses the methods and procedures utilized by the
researchers. It covers the research design, respondents of the study, instruments
used the descriptive method of research in order to determine the appropriate
and effective learning style for the students.
Research Design
This study used the descriptive method of research in order to determine
the appropriate learning style. According to Jaime Hayle M.S (2018), descriptive
method can be a survey method. Since the researchers will analyze the
appropriate and effective learning style for the students, hence, the researchers
should effectively use the descriptive method in order to statically analyze the
data. The use of descriptive design enables the researchers to measure the
results rather than exploring the results. In a survey method research,
participants will answer questions administered through interviews or
questionnaires. After participants answer the questions, researchers describe the
response given. In order for the survey to be both reliable and valid it is important
that the questions are constructed properly. Questions should be written so they
are clear and easy to comprehend.
By using descriptive research, the researcher can effectively design a
pres-structured questionnaires with both open and closed ended questions. The
information, data gathering and statistical treatment.
This study used information collected from the responses of can be used
statistically presented in this type of research method for the easy interpretation
of the report users.
