Effective Exhaust Velocity in Propulsion

This document compares different propulsion technologies for spacecraft. It provides information on key metrics like exhaust velocity, thrust, duration, and delta-V capability. Solid, hybrid, and liquid fuel rockets can achieve high thrust but have limited duration and exhaust velocities ranging from 1-4.7 km/s. Electric propulsion methods like ion thrusters provide low thrust over long durations but high total impulse with exhaust velocities up to 210 km/s. Emerging technologies like solar sails and laser propulsion can achieve high delta-V but require external sources of momentum transfer and propellant. Most technologies are at an experimental prototype stage with some chemical rockets and ion thrusters proven for orbital flight.
