Understanding Research Variables and Types

1) The document provides information and exercises on conducting research, including defining variables, identifying independent and dependent variables, and clarifying research terms. 2) It asks the reader to identify which words from a list can be variables, and to specify whether example variables are quantitative or qualitative. 3) Several research problems are presented, asking the reader to identify the independent and dependent variables for each.

RESEARCH WORKSHEET 1

Make your mind clear about each of the following expressions by stating what you mean about such
word or phrase. (5 pts. each)

1) Research questions vs. Research problems

A research problem is a study's instructional topic or difficulty. The broad subject matter examined in a
study is referred to as a research topic. The study's main intent or goal is defined by its purpose. And A
research question is a specific question to which the study intends to respond. It is at the heart of
systematic research and aids in the clear definition of a research route.

2) Researchable problem
A researchable problem is a specific problem, difficulty, contradiction, or knowledge gap that you will
attempt to resolve through your study. You could look for problems that are either practical or
theoretical in nature, with the goal of advancing knowledge.

3) Source of a research problem

Source of a research problem is were all rich sources of research problems on were you can obtain them
for example, could concentrate on the impact of a stringent punctuality policy on staff productivity. Or
you can gain source on the net, people, or the social media.

RESEARCH WORKSHOP 5

Briefly answer the following questions. (5 pts. each)

Why do we need to problematize our research problem?

To undertake research that adds fresh and important insights, you need an issue. You're more likely to
wind up with an unfocused and unmanageable project if you don't have a well-defined research
problem.

What is the difference between the statement of the problem and a research question?

Research problem are discovered after you conducted a literature review. And problem statement is a
constructed sentence how you describe your research problem

What is the difference between a descriptive and correlational research question?

Descriptive research is defined as a research method that involves observing behavior to describe
attributes, objectively and systematically. And correlational research aims to find wether a relationship
exists between two or more factors.

Common questions

Descriptive research focuses on observing and documenting behaviors or characteristics systematically to describe them accurately, without examining relationships. In contrast, correlational research questions investigate whether relationships or associations exist between two or more variables, offering insights into potential connections .

A research problem refers to the broad topic or difficulty a study addresses, while a research question is a specific inquiry the study aims to answer. The research problem outlines the study's general area of interest, whereas the research question directs the study's specific focus and its path .

Problematizing a research problem is crucial to ensure that the study provides fresh and important insights. Without a well-defined research problem, the research may become unfocused and unmanageable, lacking direction and potentially leading to insignificant or redundant outcomes .

Chronological order in research processes is significant as it ensures a logical and systematic flow of activities, leading to coherent and credible findings. For example, data collection must precede data analysis to have material available for interpretation. Maintaining this order ensures the study's integrity and reliability .

Corrupt practices can lead to significant stress, numerous personal problems, and a sense of anxiety, which might compel an individual to resign. Factors such as lack of job satisfaction due to unethical behavior or witnessing workplace corruption can heavily influence one's decision to leave an organization .

Korean novelas influence Filipino viewers by potentially fostering an addictive behavior, causing them to stay awake late, and igniting intense interest or admiration for the actors and actresses. This behavior shift may be attributed to the engaging content and cultural appeal of the programs .

Texting can negatively impact students' grammatical competence by promoting incorrect grammar and spelling practices. Frequent texting may expose students to informal language and slang that are unsuitable for formal writing, leading to difficulties in grammar and spelling accuracy due to non-standard words and abbreviations popularized on social media .

Collaborative learning enhances communicative competence by fostering environments where learners can practice social communication and interaction. It encourages the exchange of information and cooperation among peers, thereby improving their abilities to communicate effectively within a group context .

Identifying sources of a research problem can guide researchers to uncover practical or theoretical issues relevant to their field. These sources, such as literature, social media, or personal observations, provide a contextual framework for formulating meaningful research questions and objectives .

In a research study, the independent variable is the one that is manipulated to observe its effects on another variable, known as the dependent variable. The independent variable is considered the cause or input, while the dependent variable is the outcome or effect resulting from changes in the independent variable .
