Introduction
Background of the study
Social media`s effect on education is becoming a motivating force in today`s world
of connected learning. The world is growing, and the way we provide instruction is evolving
as a result of technological innovations like social media. According to Hopkins (2020)
Social media and education will work in tandem if used appropriately and as this stated by
Rahmi and Zeki (2017) social media has been always described as the channel through
which knowledge is transmitted between communities and learners.
According to the study of Asemah and Adegoh (2012) it assists people in being the
more educated, enlightened, and up to date on global affairs. Humanity is exposed to a new
way of doing things as a result of technical advances. Social media platforms such as,
Facebook, have become increasingly popular in recent years, providing young people with a
new way to connect with one another and communicate with the rest of the world. After the
development of Facebook and MySpace in 2004 and 2006, social networking became
popular. Facebook, for instance, has over 500 million users and is still rising, with 85 percent
of undergraduate students using the social media site (Schneider,2009). These figures are
predicted to increase as the number of Facebook user increases (Univerisity of New
Hampshire,2009).
The prevalence of social media use among students has been confirmed through
studies. According to Wiley and Sisson, (2006), more than 90% of tertiary school students
use social networks. Students spend roughly thirty (30) minutes a day on social networking
sites as part of their everyday routine (Nicole, Charles and Clif,2007).

social media can be powerful learning tool because it helps students to remain
connected and engaged with their profession, course, and peers and part-time jobs are open
to students. The challenge is walking the thin line between efficiency and procrastination
(Juice Academy,2018).
In the Philippines, as stated by Cabral, et al 2016, social networking is one of the
most common web-based activities. It has already become ingrained in Filipino cyber culture.
As per Power to the People Wave-3 (2008), 83 percent of Filipinos belong to a social
network. In addition, Filipinos ranked first in photo uploads and web video viewers, and
second in blog readers. Social networking in the Philippines is used in education, election
campaign materials, media propaganda, and as a weapon in criminal investigations .
Moreover, in Tagum City the amount of time students spend on social media has
exploded, according to them. This is especially true of city students who are surrounded by
computers, social networking sites, video games, digital music players, video cameras,
mobile phones, and other digital age toys and equipment. Many educators believe that their
students' use of social media has harmed their ability to learn. When asked about a variety of
specific academic skills, public and private teachers are much more likely to conclude that
social media has harmed rather than helped students achieve academic success (Mantalaan,
2014). Hence the researchers want to investigate or to find out the Influence of social media
in relation to the levels of the academic performance among grade 10 junior high school
students.

Statement of the Problem
The study seeks to find out the influence of social media to the academic
performance among grade 10 learners of Assumption Academy of Mawab, Inc. The study
aims to answer the following questions:
1. What are the forms of Social Media that influence students’ use of information in
terms of;
1.1 Facebook
1.2 YouTube
1.3 Twitter
2. What guidelines should be created to control the social media influence on the
academic performance of grade 10 learners in Assumption Academy of Mawab,
Inc.?

Significance of the study
The key component of this significance will satisfy any knowledge about the
literature or set of educational problems. This research study will be a great benefit to the
following:
The findings of this study will serve as the basis of how to prevent the negative
impact of social media affecting the academic performance of students.
This study will aid the concerns of the community to be aware on the existing ideas
of the influences of social media in terms of student’s academic performance.
The study will also convey significance of social media through the lens of school
parameters. Also, educators and staffs will be able to highlight the impact of social media to
the academic performance among grade 10 learners of Assumption Academy of Mawab Inc.

Chapter II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES
This section of the study presents some readings, articles and citations gathered from
various sources that supports the researcher’s analysis. Typically, these are sources from
websites, journals and books, as well as other sources for reference purposes. The literature
and studies that were chosen and gathered will identify the influence of social media to the
level of the academic performance among grade 10 learners of Assumption Academy of
Mawab inc.
Influence of Social Media
Social media are a series of internet websites, programs, and activities that promote
communication, community building, engagement, and sharing, according to Junco al et
(2010). The increasing importance of social media use among today's youth cannot be
overstated. Over the years, social networking has become increasingly popular among young
Second-cycle students, It's a way to interact with people not just on campus, but all over the
world. Furthermore, outside of school, though, with colleagues, many people benefit from
social networking because it makes them feel as though they are part of something bigger, be
a part of a community because of its growing success, Professors and economists are
debating whether students' grades are unaffected by how much time they spend on these
pages.(Choney, 2010).
Various researchers investigated the influence of social media on users; for example,
Moon (2011) stated that social media has a negative effect on students in a study titled
"effect of Facebook on undergraduate academic performance." The more students use
Facebook, the more it affects their academic results, according to the findings. Similarly,

Oye (2012) observes that most younger students use social networking sites mostly for
socializing rather than for academic purposes.
According to Oye (2012), most students believe that social networking sites have a
positive effect on their academic success. Shana (2012) found that students mostly use social
media to make friends and talk, just 26% of students (respondents) said they use social
media for academic purposes, according to the results.
Previous research has found that using social media sites has a positive effect on
students' academic success (Habes, Salloum, Alghizzawi and Alshibly 2018). There is a
strong impact of social media on education for both teachers and students, with social media
serving as a motivator and primary supporter of education (Selwyn,2012). Many educational
institutions have been increasing their reliance on e-learning use data (Saa, Al-Emran, and
Shaalan 2019) in order to increase engagement and efficacy in the educational process
(Friedman, L.W and Friedman, H 2013).
Social media as student’s use of information
Social media shows up to have changed students' information-seeking behaviors
in expansion to influencing communication, promoting, and instruction. Concurring to a
few ponders, understudies may utilize a assortment of social media stages to meet
their scholarly and regular data needs. Since of these shifts in information-seeking behavior,
it's more critical than ever to get it how students assess and utilize data gotten from social
media. As a result, it shows up that the time has come to review (and conceivably extend) the
scope of IL instruction to incorporate a assortment of media and contexts. As a
result, custodians will be able to include indeed more esteem to their students' instruction and
deep rooted learning (kyung, Sei-Ching, Sin and Young, 2014).
Influence of different social media platforms to students: mainly, Facebook, Twitter
and YouTube.

SNSs (social-networking sites) are the newest online communication platform that
allows users to build a public or private profile and connect with others in their networks
(Boyd & Ellison, 2008).
Users build online communities to exchange knowledge, ideas, personal messages, and
other content (as videos) via social media, which is described as “forms of electronic
communication (as Web sites for social networking and microblogging).” Although there are
many ways to categorize social media, the main function and intent of use is mostly focused
on the main function and purpose of use, such as blogging, microblogging (such as Twitter),
social networking (for example, Facebook), collaborative information creation and sharing
(for example, Wikipedia), multimedia sharing (for example, YouTube), and sharing feedback
and thoughts (such as social Q&A, user reviews).
Social media is a tool that is becoming quite popular these days because of its user-
friendly, and facebook as one of the most popular with more than two billion people using it
every month according to Lua (2019).
San Miguel (2009), focused on the relationship between time spent on Facebook and
the academic performance of students. The overall findings indicated “more time on
Facebook equals slightly lower grades”. In his study, the average facebook user had a GPA
of 3.0 to 3.5, while the non facebook user had a GPA of 3.5 - 4.0. Also, the average facebook
user study for 1 – 5 hours per week, while the non facebook user would study 11 – 15 hours
per week Enriquez (2010), this revealed that students who multi-task between social
networking sites and home work are likely to have 20% lower grades than a student who
does not have a social networking site. He believes that even running a social networking
site on the background on a student’s PC while studying or doing homework could lower a
student’s grade. He believes that “the problem is that most people have Facebook or other
social networking sites, their e-mails and may be instant messaging constantly running in the

background while they are carrying out their tasks” Choney (2010), in looking at the time
spend on facebook and its effect on academic performance said a user of Facebook has an
average “GPA of 3.06, while non users have an average GPA of 3.82”.
In the separate study of Kyung, et al (2010) suggests that there should be a noticeable
drop in results as we spend more time on Facebook. their findings show the amount of time
spent on Facebook and the frequency with which it was used were both predictors of
academic success. It could also predict one's quality of life. However, an unanticipated
discovery was that Facebook is still used for a variety of positive purposes. Researchers
expect to see more optimistic Facebook use among undergraduate students in the future,
which will help them improve their academic results learning..
Though Facebook remains the most prominent social networking site among students,
educators have become more open to incorporating Twitter into the learning
process (Grosseck & Holotescu 2009; Rankin 2009; Ebner etal. 2010; Schroeder et al.
2010).
Twitter is a social media tool that allows users to send and receive messages no more
than 140 characters in length, called “tweets.” As of August 2014, Twitter had 271 million
users (Koh, 2014). Since Twitter is predominantly a microblogging forum, it is more
conducive to an ongoing, public discussion than Facebook (Ebner, et al. 2010). Indeed,
others have referred to Twitter as a blog with a limit of 140 characters per post that also
includes social networking features (McFedries 2007). of which are related to student
engagement.
Another social media platform that could influence students is Youtube, Since the
creation of YouTube in 2005, according to Behaviour & Information Technology, the video-
sharing website has received high praise on many levels from children to adults. The highly
versatile site has become a place for influence and inspiration. Whether it be through means

of makeup and fashion videos, or positive reinforcements and outlooks, the platform has
reached an educational emergence. In addition, Many students have found that the site is
useful when looking for new trends or when needing to learn how to do a task that would be
much more strenuous through written instructions (Weinback,2018).
You Tube has been linked with increased student need for learning. The shared
comments between student make an increased awareness and usage of how students describe
how they acquired learning programs as well as how they perceived derived usefulness of
electronic learning through You Tube videos by providing helpful and new ways to learn.
Practical tasks are determined by the variables perceived usefulness. The conceptual
framework of YouTube makes usefulness for both teachers and students in learning by video
in addition to the easy access which make the relationship between YouTube uses and
academic performance of direct effect. Perceived usefulness was found to affect various
technologies in the past (Habes, Salloum,Alghizzav and Mhamdi, 2020).
Student’s Achievement and Grades
According to the findings of Dr. Ballele (2018) Students use social media to help them
with their research. establish social media groups for students to share their thoughts. As a
result, the majority of them use social media in school, which helps to improve awareness
and, ultimately, student education success. 52 percent of people spend 3-4 hours a day on
social media and do not use the time for educational purposes. Based on his research
findings, it is clear that social media does not significantly impact school student’s studies,
because the correlation between spending hours on social media and student examination
marks are not positively correlated. The student spent fewer hours on social media had
excellent scores on the examination and this was supported by the study of Ahmed and Qazi
(2011), Hanqittai and Hsich (2010), Pasek and Hanqittai (2009), who conducted on the same
topic that revealed no correlation between social media and students’ academic performance.

A study conducted at Whittemore school of Business and Economic on one thousand, one
hundred and twenty seven students revealed that there is no correlation between how much
time is spent on social networking sites and grades (Martin, 2009). Again, University of New
Hampshire (2010) study also revealed that students’ use of social media sites do not affect
grades.
As per Deng and Tavares (2013), social media help students to think clearly and this
helps them to make wise decisions in their day-to-day lives. As per the study
conducted by Apeanti And Danso (2014), students felt that their grades would be better if
they can contact professors openly through social media to get their doubts clarified. Yunus
and Salehi (2012)pointed out that, social media use enhanced students’ vocabulary and
writing ability. Thus, it is clear that if used wisely for educational and constructive purposes,
social
media can have positive influence on students’ academic performance. Despite the various
positive effects that social media can have, if not used properly and vigilantly it can also
affect students’ academic performance negatively (Gorhe, 2019).

Chapter III
Methodology
This chapter presents the method used in the study, which covers the purpose of the
study and research design , research instruments and data gathering procedure
Research Design
The method used in this study was descriptive correlational design. The descriptive
correlational design was used to obtain the influence of social media to the level of academic
performance among grade 10 learners of Assumption Academy of Mawab, Inc.
According to Creswell, Correlational research design is used by investigators to
describe and measure the degree of relationship between two or more variables or sets of
scores. On the other hand, Kowalczyk (2003) define descriptive research as a study designed
to illustrate or describe the participant of the study in a more precise way. In general,
descriptive-correlation design is a research design that gives an explanation of how the
variable affects the other variable.
Respondents
The respondents of the study are the Junior High School learners specifically the
Grade 10 learners, who are currently enrolled in Assumption Academy of Mawab, Inc. In the
school year 2020-2021. The study involved (15) fifteen learners among (48) forty-eight of
Grade 10 learners of Assumption Academy of Mawab, Inc.

Research locale
The Study was conducted in Assumption Academy of Mawab, Inc., it is one of the
Dominican Schools in the Philippines. It is Located at Purok 1A Poblacion, Mawab, Davao
de Oro neighboring the ongoing construction of San Roque Parish of Mawab.

Research Instruments
The data was collected via online survey technique in a form of questionnaire,
consisting of questions. The questionnaire where distributed to the selected Grade 10
learners of Assumption Academy of Mawab, Inc. a total of (5) five items each statement
equally distributed to each indicator. The questionnaire solicited the area of the influence of
social media to the level of academic performance among grade 10 learners of Assumption
Academy of Mawab, Inc.

In determining the student’s achievement and academic performance, the researchers
used the mean grade of the respondents. The following parameters were also used in the
study.

Data Gathering Procedure
In gathering the data, the researchers followed these steps. First, is by asking
permission from the head of the school, the principal through a letter. After the approval, the
test questionnaires were distributed to the respondents who are the Grade 10 learners of
Assumption Academy of Mawab Inc. The results and data collected where then interpreted
and evaluated.
