A Lesson for the Sultan

Narrator: Long ago in Agamaniyog, Solotan sa Agamaniyog and his wife, Ba’i sa Agamaniyog were
a couple that is well known for their wealth. They were so wealthy that they owned almost half of the
land in Agamaniyog and owned large herds of cows, carabaos, and horses. (tas dito asa may ilog
silang magasawa tas may nakita silang maliit na kubo, andun sa kubo sila mama tsaka si babay)
One morning, when the couple went down the lake to pray, they saw a small hut of a poor couple
Lokes a quarrelling Mama and Lokes a Babay, who were arguing and shouting at each other. The
couple blamed each other for their misfortune in life.
(Asa loob sila ng kubo neto)
Lokes a Babay (Hiyao): You’re so lazy! You don’t have a job and can’t even raise our family right!
What will I do with you!?
Lokes a Mama (Veloso): What about you?! You’re too expensive! You don’t know how to be careful
with our money!!
Narrator: Overhearing the quarrel, the Sultan and Ba’i of Agamaniyog stepped in and warned Lokes
a Mama and Lokes a Babay to stop the fight.
Ba’i of Agamaniyog (villiones): You two! Stop arguing early in the morning,
Solotan of Agamaniyog (Sindanum): Yeah, instead of shouting at each other, you two should talk
about your problems in a calm way.
Narrator: When they got home, the Sultan and Ba’i of Agamaniyog talked about the quarrel between
the poor couple until they themselves began to argue.
(Galet na tono ng boses ah)
Solotan of Agamaniyog (Sindanum): it’s all Lokes a Mama’s fault anyway because he was so lazy
that he couldn’t provide his family a better and convenient life.
Ba’i of Agamaniyog (villiones): If Lokes a Mama were well managed by a good wife, he could be a
good husband who could make a good living.
Narrator: The Sultan and Ba’i could not keep from arguing, each one insisting at being right, until
their argument resulted in a serious quarrel.
Solotan of Agamaniyog (Sindanum): Okay, fine! Let us make a deal. We would manage one of them
so and reform them in the heat of their argument to see which one of us is right and wrong.
Ba’i of Agamaniyog (villiones): Fine! Then I will take Lokes a Mama under my care!
Solotan of Agamaniyog (Sindanum): I will take Lokes a babay then.
Ba’i of Agamaniyog (villiones): Deal!!
(Nagiimpake na sila Ba’i dito para maghiwalay muna sila ng bahay)
Narrator: The Sultan and the Ba’i of Agamaniyog agreed to part ways. The Sultan brought Lokes a
Babay to live with him and Ba’i sa Agamaniyog in turn went to live with Lokes a Mama.
(bago neto umalis si Ba’i sa mansion nila)
Ba’i of Agamaniyog (villiones): Someday Solotan sa Agamaniyog will pick up the leftovers of Lokes
a Mama.
(parang nagyayabang ung tono ng boses dito) Solotan of Agamaniyog (Sindanum): As long as I
live and have strength, I will never let that happen.
Narrator: The Sultan offered his new companion everything she wanted.
Solotan of Agamaniyog (Sindanum): I can give and do everything for you Lokes a Babay, just tell
me what you need.
Lokes a Babay (Hiyao): Really!? Okay then, I want to have livers of a cow and carabao to eat every
day at every meal.
Narrator: All of the things Lokes a Babay asked Solotan of Agamaniyog were easily given to her.
One day the Sultan of Balantankairan came to visit.
Solotan of Agamaniyog (Sindanum): Sultan of Balantankairan is coming to visit us Lokes a Babay, I
want you to greet him with respect, okay?
Lokes a Babay (Hiyao): hmm, okay.
( Dumating ung Sultan of Balantankairan )
( Parang bored or walang gana ung tono ng boses ) Lokes a Babay (Hiyao): Hello.
Narrator: Sultan of Balantankairan looked at Lokes a Babay in an awkward way. Solotan sa
Agamaniyog was very embarrassed at the dry welcome that Lokes a Babay showed his royal visitor.
She served neither his visitor nor him. It was at this time that he became convinced that Lokes a
Babay was lazy and capricious. He also realized that his wealth had gradually vanished.
( Nasa mallit na kubo )
Narrator: Meanwhile, Ba’i sa Agamaniyog could not even climb up the small hut of Lokes a Mama
because it had no ladder.
Ba’i of Agamaniyog (villiones): Lokes a Mama can you make a ladder? Because I wouldn’t be able to
climb up on your hut without it.
Lokes a Mama (Veloso): Nah, I don’t have tools to make one.
Ba’i of Agamaniyog (villiones): You’re really silly. Why don’t you have any?
Narrator: She gave him her knife and told him to use twigs if that were what it would take to make a
ladder. Once inside the hut, Ba’i sa Agamaniyog told Lokes a Mama not to come near her, because in
reality she was not yet divorced from her husband but had only a temporary arrangement with him.
Ba’i of Agamaniyog (villiones): Lokes a Mama where is our dinner?
Lokes a Mama (Veloso): I’m really sorry Ba’i but I couldn’t afford to buy us our dinner.
Ba’i of Agamaniyog (villiones): It’s okay Lokes a Mama, you can just gather ferns from the forest for
dinner.
Narrator: Ba’i of Agamaniyog would often send Lokes a Mama to the forest to gather plenty of
firewood. Sitting by the window one day, she saw a huge tree that stood out from the others.
Ba’i of Agamaniyog (villiones): Dear, what’s with that tree over there? It seems so different from the
other trees.
Lokes a Mama (Veloso): Oh that’s a sandalwood, it’s a very useful tree.
Ba’i of Agamaniyog (villiones): Dear I want you to cut down the tree, chop it to pieces, separate the
branches from the trunk, and store all the pieces under our hut.
Narrator: One day Lokes a Mama heard that the Sultan of Balantankairan was looking for
sandalwood.
Lokes a Mama (Veloso): Sultan of Balantankairan, I heard that you are looking for a sandalwood sir. I
have a lots of sandalwood stored under my hut, can you pay a visit to check on it?
Narrator: Sultan of Balantankairan visited Lokes a Mama’s hut a found the sandalwoods that is
stored in his hut.
Sultan of Balantankairan: In Agamaniyog no one would find such a tree except the one you had. I
am interested in buying these sandalwoods and I am willing to pay the price provided there was
enough sandalwood to fill his boat. I am even willing to leave everything behind in my boat including
my seven maids and seven servants.
Narrator: Lokes a Mama immediately give the sandalwoods to the Sultan and the Sultan took all
aboard his boat, paid Lokes a Mama generously and left. Ba’i of Agamaniyog and Lokes a Mama
became rich. A beautiful torogan (royal house) was soon erected, and Ba’i sa Agamaniyog ordered
two kanter (beds). She bought a sultan’s tobao (headdress) for Lokes a Mama and changed his name
to Maradiya Dinda. She was always surrounded by her seven maids, and Lokes a Mama, now
Maradiya Dinda, was always escorted by his seven male servants.

Narrator: One morning Solotan sa Agamaniyog found a tobao and was told that it was Maradiya
Dinda’s. Taking it with him, he went up the torogan of Maradiya and saw him lying in bed like a
sultan, while on the side was his former wife.
( Pangaasar na tono ) Ba’i of Agamaniyog (villiones): My dear Solotan, do you remember when I said
that someday you will pick up leftovers from Lokes sa Mama?
Narrator: Blinded with tears, the Sultan hardly found his way out and went home. He then became
sickly and nearly died from all his heartaches.
