Now the teacher will ask the following
questions after identifying the things they saw.
a. When do we use of spoon and fork? JB: Teacher we use spoon and fork when eating.
b. What do you think is the taste of vinegar? Samantha: The taste of vinegar is sour.
c. Why do you think we need alcohol? Basty: So that we can avoid diseases.

B. Presentation of the lesson.
The teacher will now discuss the use of different materials that they can see around them.
Metals-Metals are usually solid, shiny, strong, and malleable.
Rubber-Rubber is a material that can be stretched. It can be used to make objects like erasers,
Plastics-There are many types of plastics with many different properties. Plastics are durable and
waterproof. Some plastics are transparent and light; others are tough and difficult to break.
Woods-Wood is an important material that comes from trees.
Other use of materials
1. Fertilizer, pesticides, and detergent
-Fertilizers contain substances that will make the soil fertile. Pesticides and insecticides are used to
kill harmful insects that destroy plants. Some chemicals in detergents/ disinfectant are used for
cleaning the toilet and bathroom.
2. Vitamins and medicines
-We need vitamins and medicines to stay healthy. Vitamins make your body resistance stronger.
Medicines like paracetamol is taken to ease headache and fever.

After teaching the learners about the different materials, the teacher will also discuss the effects of some
material on people and the environment.

1. What is detergent and when do we use it? Abygail: The use of detergent is to wash our clothes
and remove stains for it to be clean.

Detergent contains hazardous substances that
is fatal to your body system. When water with
detergents flows into a river or lake, plants and
animals may die.
2. Agricultural chemicals

-Farmers use pesticides and insecticides to
increase crop production. If not properly
handled or used, fertilizers and pesticides can

-chlorofluorocarbons are used as propellants in
aerosols and fire extinguishers. Now, they are
also used in making polystyrene grains as
packaging materials.
4. Fossil Fuels: Gasoline, Crude oil, and coal
-are used to make vehicles run. Vehicles in the
roads produce major pollutants such as carbon
monoxide and nitrogen oxide.
After telling the learners the bad effect of the materials, the teacher will discuss on how to handle these
materials properly.

7. Storing flammable materials to a secure place and out of reach of children is a great idea

9. Reading the labels of the chemical is a good idea before using it.
