Electric Field Calculations in Physics

This document provides 7 practice problems involving Coulomb's Law and electric fields/forces for a physics problem set, including calculating forces and electric fields between multiple point charges located at various positions, finding the net electric field and force at given points from multiple charge configurations, and determining electric field components and force from a uniformly charged rod. Students are instructed to show their work and solutions for each problem.

GPHY203 Problem Set 1

General Physics 2 15 January 2020

Instruction: Solve the following problems stated below. Avoid erasures, show your full solution by writing it in
your respective worksheets.
1. Coulomb’s Law: Suppose we have a Q that has a value of 25 nC. A point charge +2Q is at the origin and
a point charge -Q is located along the x axis at x as in the right figure.
Determine the sum of the forces that acts on +Q, +2Q, and -Q respectively.
Note that x = 25.0 cm. (Hint: You will have 6 forces and determine also the
value of each components. Also draw each vector representation of forces) (50
points).
2. Coulomb’s Law: Three point charges are located on the y-axis as follows: charge q1 = +3.00 nC at y =
12 cm, charge q2 = -6.40 nC at the origin (y = 0), charge q3 = -12.80 nC at the origin (y = -14 cm). What
is the total force (magnitude and direction) exerted by these three charges on a fourth charge q4 = -10.00
nC at x = 120 cm? (Hint: You will have 3 forces and determine also the value of each components. Also
draw each vector representation of forces) (50 points).
3. Coulomb’s Law: Three point charges are arranged as shown at the right.
Find (a) the magnitude and (b) the direction of the electric force on the
particle at the origin. (Hint: You will have 3 forces and determine also the
value of each components. Also draw each vector representation of forces)
(50 points).
4. Electric Field: Point charge 𝑞1 = 10.00 𝑛𝐶 is at the origin and point charge 𝑞2 = −25.00 𝑛𝐶 is on the
x-axis at 𝑥 = 4.50 𝑐𝑚. Point P is on the y-axis at 𝑦 = 3.00 𝑐𝑚. (a) Calculate the electric fields ⃗⃗⃗⃗
𝑬𝟏 and ⃗⃗⃗⃗
𝑬𝟐
at point P due to the charges 𝑞1 and 𝑞2 . Express the results in terms of unit vectors. (b) Use the results of
part (a) to obtain the resultant field at P, express in unit vector form. (50 points)
5. Electric field: A point charge 𝑞1 = −4.00 𝑛𝐶 is at the 𝑥 = 0.6 𝑚, 𝑦 = 0.8 𝑚, and a second point charge
𝑞2 = +6.00 𝑛𝐶 is at point 𝑥 = 0.600 𝑚, 𝑦 = 0. Calculate the magnitude and the direction of the sum of
the net electric field (refers to the sum of electric field) at the origin due to these two point charges. (50
points).
6. Electric field: The two charges 𝑞1 = +30 𝜇𝐶 and 𝑞2 = −25 𝜇𝐶 as shown at the
right figure. What is the direction of the net electric field due to these two point
charges at points A, B, and C. (Hint: Sketch the electric field for better
visualization of the problem). (50 points).
7. Bonus: Electric field and Electric force: A uniformly charged rod of
length L and total charge Q lies along the x axis as shown in the right
figure. (a) Find the components of the electric field at point P on the y axis
a distance d from the origin. (b) What are the approximate values of the
field components when d >> L? (c) What is the force that the rod will exert
at point p? (d) Explain why we expect this result. (150 points)
