ANIMALS MATTER TO ME

Working since 2010 to help the homeless &

speechless souls

Animals Matter To Me (AMTM) is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) established by

Ganesh Nayak and Dheeraja Nayak in 2010 in Malad (West), working for welfare of stray &
abandoned animals, birds & reptiles.
Animals Matters to Me (AMTM) is a clinical rescue facility for strays & abandoned ownerless
animals, birds & reptiles in need of help. They run a shelter cum hospital in Malad, Mumbai
and offer services of Adoption, Animal Shelter, Medical Treatment, Sterilization & Animal
Ambulance.
Since its inception, AMTM has worked towards animal welfare & animal rights and is
dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of modern-day stray & abandoned animals.
They provide refuge feed and care for the homeless, abandoned & abused animals found on
our streets that have suffered from abuse and neglect as a direct result of cruelty & reasons
unknown.

All living species need to be loved & we want to help make that happen.
Work Area
Animals Matter To Me (AMTM) was initially working in local areas of Malad & Goregaon,
which has now spread its roots to whole Western Mumbai to help the street dogs and cats
who had no-one else to care for them.

Everyone deserves an everlasting home and
the process is much easier than you think.

OPD cases.

At any given time, the AMTM rehabilitation
facility has a capacity of 300 inmates.

day.

CSR
In their CSR programmes, AMTM is
supported by many organisations.
Work Done During COVID Time
 Food Packets Distribution
Animals Matter To Me (AMTM) didn’t stop feeding the voiceless souls even after lockdown
and they did their part by daily feeding 1000 stray dogs.
They came together with Royal Canine, French manufacturer of Dog & Cat food and fed
many strays in the wake of COVID.

March 25, 2020 Post Lockdown Announcement

 Vaccination and Treatment of Injured Strays

Work During COVID remained the same, they used to vaccinate and treat all the injured
stray coming in.
 Adoptions
Even During Covid-19 time they didn’t stop and continued with their adoption process.
They encouraged every individual approaching them to adopt an indie dog and give them a
forever home.
Difficulties in Functioning During COVID
Time
 Lack of Funds
This notice period photo tells us all the effect of Covid19 crisis on AMTM rehab facility at
Malad West. They were here for 8 long years but finally they had to vacate the premises as
they could not afford heavy rentals any more.
They had to leave this place as they had run out of funds and they couldn’t afford the
current facility. Their animals were also on the verge of homelessness if they didn’t build a
new shelter soon.
They didn’t have enough money for the treatment of stray animals that were brought in due
to accidents, violence, stray fights, etc.
Image is of 12th November 2020, where AMTM had to vacate the rehab center

 Abandoning of Pets
On an average AMTM receives 300-400 calls a day.
Abandoning of pets happens a lot!
Some of the dogs are handicapped, they don’t have limb, a paw or a leg, or some are blind.
Many people just call up and tell them ‘If you don’t take it, then we will dump it’
They knew that if they’re not going to take the strays in then people will just dump them
and they would end up on the streets, having no knowledge of the place, and eventually
getting in bad accidents they will die which was a major difficulty especially during the
lockdown.

 Strict COVID-19 Guidelines

Due to COVID-19 checks and new rules in Malwani which is in Malad (West), AMTM had to
push their feeding program from morning to midnight, as shown in the image given below
the dogs and cats are being fed by AMTM in the midnight just because people didn’t
approve of it to feed them in the morning.

 Hitting & Shooing Strays from their Local Vicinity due to Rumours
Even though the WHO clarified that pet animals cannot spread or even get COVID-19, there
was panic between individuals and many wanted to abandon their pets, hit dogs just
because they were entering the society and treat them in an inhumane behaviour.
This is just one of the many cases that AMTM faced in COVID
Cruelty hits another low. This dog was hit by planks of wood by more than 4 guys in Vani
society near Orlem church. They received a call picked her up from there and tried to
stabilize her. Her bones were fractured very badly and they couldn’t save her.

 Collecting Funds from Individuals for Treatment of Strays

Animals Matter To Me (AMTM) had a hard time in collecting donations from individuals
required to treat animals in distress. It frequently posted on all its social and WhatsApp
groups for requirement of funds needed for treatment of stray animals which was very
costly.
There were times when people used to see the stories and donate but there were also times
in COVID when people didn’t send any money as their own financial stability was very low.
So these were the tough times faced by AMTM during COVID.
Learnings
 AMTM works for eradicating the issues that barely people notice, whatever it might
be and one should be ready to help whenever needed.

 It teaches people how to serve others without requiring personal financial

assistance.

 It shows how to raise donations and secure financial support to assist the poor.

 It instils in us the values of kindness, prosperity, and everything else essential to

sustain humanity.

 Network increases a lot once a NGO interacts with a set of people and they in-turn
talk to other people working along.

 Don’t believe in rumours and check the news yourself as it can create a lot of panic
among individuals.

 Due to COVID-19, not only humans suffered but there were also a lot many voiceless
souls who faced many issues.

Common questions

Powered by AI

During the COVID-19 pandemic, AMTM faced several challenges including the lack of funds, strict COVID-19 guidelines, and increased abandonment of pets, along with misinformation leading to cruelty towards strays. To address these, they continued their operations by shifting feeding schedules to midnight due to guidelines, relied heavily on partnerships with organizations like Royal Canine for food supplies, and made persistent efforts to raise funds through social media and networks to maintain their rescue and rehabilitation activities .

AMTM approaches pet abandonment by encouraging adoptions, promoting the message that every animal deserves a home. They actively respond to calls of abandoned animals, often dealing with cases of neglect due to disabilities. Public perception, often influenced by misinformation, plays a major role as it impacts abandonment rates and necessitates AMTM's continuous community outreach and education about responsible pet ownership and the non-involvement of animals in spreading COVID-19 .

AMTM’s work is significant as it addresses the welfare of stray and abandoned animals, who often face neglect and abuse due to societal stigma and misinformation. This NGO provides critical services such as adoption, medical care, and feeding programs, challenging negative perceptions and promoting humane treatment. Their efforts during the pandemic underscore the importance of supporting vulnerable animal populations in urban environments, fostering community awareness and empathy .

AMTM leverages community and corporate partnerships by collaborating with organizations such as Royal Canine for food supplies, utilizing CSR initiatives for support, and engaging with individuals through social media platforms to gather donations required for continuing their rescue, treatment, and feeding programs. These partnerships are crucial for resource provision and in augmenting their reach and impact in animal welfare .

The pandemic strained AMTM's financial resources, limiting their ability to fund treatments for strays. They struggled with fundraising as individual donations declined due to wider financial instability. To mitigate this, AMTM used social media to solicit donations, emphasizing transparency in their needs and leveraging partnerships for resource procurement to sustain their operations .

AMTM adapted their feeding program by shifting the feeding times from morning to midnight due to the new COVID-19 guidelines and local community responses, which did not permit feeding strays during the daytime .

The COVID-19 pandemic severely impacted AMTM financially, leading them to vacate their rehabilitation facility in Malad West due to an inability to afford high rentals. This situation threatened their operational capacity as they faced the risk of the animals becoming homeless without a new facility .

AMTM maintained an effective adoption process during COVID-19, which demonstrated resilience and dedication. Despite challenges, they promoted the adoption of indie dogs and continued placements into forever homes, showcasing their adaptability and the strength of their community engagement. Their efficiency during this time was aided by clear communication and robust processes to encourage potential adopters to provide for needy animals .

Misinformation during COVID-19, such as the false belief that animals could spread the virus, led to increased cruelty towards strays and abandonment of pets. This misinformation fueled panic, leading to behavior changes like hitting and shooing away strays, complicating AMTM’s rescue efforts and necessitating increased intervention. The social implications included heightened mistrust and fear towards animals, making community engagement and educational efforts more crucial for AMTM .

AMTM imparts several societal lessons, such as the importance of serving others selflessly, raising financial support for those in need, and promoting values like kindness and prosperity. They stress the critical role of not succumbing to rumors, which is essential for collective well-being, demonstrated by their work with animals during the pandemic .
