MODULE 3
I –Title : Revisiting Pres. Cory Aquino’s Speech Before the US
Congress

II – Overview:

Pres. Cory Aquino became the First Lady President of the Republic of the
Philippines. She became after Sen. Benigno Aquino, her husband was
assassinated at the Manila International Airport on August 21, 1983. He
was long-time political opponent of President Marcos.

Pres. Cory Aquino was brought to power through the EDSA People Power
in 1986. Her emotional trauma made her speech very effective when she
delivered it before the US Congress.

III – Objectives:

This module has the following specific objectives:


1. Get a copy and read Pres. Aquino’s speech and review the salient
points of the speech.

2. Give the advantages and disadvantages, if any relative to Pres.


Aquino’s speech.

3. Discuss the significance of the said speech.


IV – Discussion:

Philippines became popular with the EDSA Revolution throughout the


world. Everybody had recognized the value of unity among Filipinos.
Pres. Aquino delivered her speech before the US Congress in September
1986,

She delivered a historical speech and appealed for help which swayed the
members of the US Congress in favor of the Filipino People. With her
speech, she got an emergency appropriation aid of $200M. The main
purpose of her speech was to ask for financial aid towards rebuilding the
Philippine economy.
