1. Tell us about yourself.

 First of all, thanks for having me, it’s a honor to be here

 Name

 Municipality

 Current Job

 Scope of work

 Personally, I am person that passionate in forecasting weather and climate, so

apart from my full-time job:

 Organize TLMC group

 Non-profitable group founded by a group of

meteorologists with a mission to inform the
community in general about the weather and
climate forecast, and publish information regarding
basic knowledge about meteorology and climate

2. What’s your greatest strength?

 I have a high curiosity in learning new things

 Academic activity, I also attended a research activity provided by the university

 Worked with one my lecture to conduct a case study about Drought in 2015 in
Timor – Leste (Southern Region)

 Desktop review

 Found out that the drought happened due to the influence of El Nino at that time

 With the data and other reference, we also found not only El Nino but also IOD

 With the result helped me to present in National conference of Meteorology,

International Symposium of Climatology and Natural Science Seminar

 NDMG: presented to the team, staffs including stakeholders

 Finally, from that till this moment they are observing and monitoring the system
as well
3. What’s your biggest weakness?

 Fast talking person

 Represent NDMG to socialize the basic knowledge about meteorology and

climate and seasonal climate

 Local community, farmers and vocal points for natural disaster

 During the presentation, explained to fast and its hard for them to understand

 I noticed it because the attendance remained me

 By than I tried to remind my self to calm my self down and try to explain again

Initiatives like the TLMC group significantly contribute to increasing public meteorological literacy by actively disseminating accessible weather and climate information. These initiatives provide platforms for different demographics to engage with knowledgeable professionals, enhancing community understanding and fostering a culture of informed public readiness for meteorological events. Such grassroots efforts help demystify scientific topics and integrate them into daily community practices .

Engaging in initiatives like the TLMC group highlights leadership through taking proactive steps to address community education gaps in meteorology. Such leadership not only fosters community awareness but also positions the individual as a facilitator of knowledge, bridging the gap between meteorological science and public understanding. This initiative can stimulate interest in meteorology, encourage stakeholder collaboration, and support informed decision-making in weather-related issues .

Participating in conferences and symposiums offers dual benefits; it enhances the individual's professional development by providing a platform to present research findings and receive constructive feedback, while simultaneously contributing to their field by disseminating new insights and fostering discussions. Such engagements promote the exchange of ideas and collaborations, driving innovation and growth within the professional community, as seen in the individual's presentations at various meteorological and climatology gatherings .

Personal passions can significantly influence professional development by driving individuals to engage in activities beyond their primary job roles. In this example, the individual is passionate about forecasting weather and climate, which led them to organize the TLMC group—an initiative focused on educating the community about meteorological and climate forecasts. This not only enhances their expertise but also broadens their professional network and exposure .

The individual's approach to communicating meteorology highlights the importance of adapting scientific knowledge to suit the comprehension levels of diverse audiences. By adjusting communication styles, such as slowing down speech and using relatable examples, scientific concepts become more digestible. This adaptability is crucial for impact, as it ensures effective dissemination of information and facilitates practical understanding among non-specialists, ultimately promoting awareness and preparedness in various communities .

Curiosity plays a crucial role in overcoming academic challenges as it drives the individual to engage in research activities beyond mandatory educational requirements. As highlighted, their curiosity led them to collaborate with a lecturer on a drought case study in Timor-Leste, unearthing the impacts of both El Nino and IOD. This contributed to the field through presentations at conferences and symposia, demonstrating the ability to transform curiosity into scholarly contributions .

Communication style greatly impacts the effectiveness of community engagement and education initiatives. For instance, the individual's fast talking during presentations made it difficult for community members, including local farmers, to understand meteorological concepts. Recognizing this issue allowed them to adjust their communication approach, ensuring the audience could comprehend and benefit from the information shared. Thus, effective communication is crucial in educational contexts to achieve desired outcomes and facilitate understanding .

Individuals can employ various strategies to overcome personal weaknesses like fast talking in professional settings. One effective approach is self-awareness and feedback; recognizing the issue through audience remarks allowed the individual to intentionally slow down and focus on clear communication. Continuous practice, perhaps with public speaking exercises, and seeking additional feedback can further enhance communication effectiveness .

Representing a group such as NDMG in educational outreach can yield multiple benefits, including enhancing personal leadership skills, expanding professional networks, and increasing community awareness about meteorology. However, challenges can arise, such as effectively communicating complex information to diverse audiences with varying levels of understanding, as evidenced by the individual's need to adjust their presentation pace for better comprehension among community members .

Academic research findings like those from the drought study in Timor-Leste carry significant implications for policy-making and environmental management by providing evidence-based insights into natural phenomena. Discovering the role of El Nino and IOD in the 2015 drought enables policymakers to anticipate and mitigate similar occurrences. Such research informs scientific and governmental discourse on climate patterns and equips stakeholders with the knowledge to develop adaptive strategies .
