Impact of General Education on Engineering

Through his college career, Tyler Maglaya took general education classes outside his major of computer engineering. While some classes were challenging, he realized how they provided valuable insights and skills. Two classes - Human Sexuality and Intro to Philosophy - had significant impacts. Human Sexuality taught respect for all people regardless of differences, while Intro to Philosophy strengthened problem-solving and perspective-taking abilities. Tyler Maglaya

General Education Reflection

Through my college career, I took many classes that don’t apply to Computer

Engineering. After looking back at them, so matter how much I struggled through them, I

realized how helpful they were to give me a better insight to the world around me and how much

they could help me later in the engineering field. These are not only just skills that these classes

taught me, but also moral principles that made me a better person.

The first general elective I want to talk about is HDFS 276 Human Sexuality. Although,

this class might be something that you would think would not apply to anything, but it might be

the class that impacted me the most. I always heard about how this class is an enjoyable class

and that you learn a lot from it. They were not wrong. This class taught me to respect anyone no

matter how different they are from you or if their views are different from your own. There is no

such thing as “normal” and there is value in every single human being. The things I learned in

this class will help me in the field because it gave me better insight on respecting everyone no

matter the cost. No matter how different or how much different their views are from mine I could

understand where they come from and tailor myself to understand and work with them as best as

I could.

Another general elective class that I took was Phil 201 Intro to Philosophy. Even though

this is an intro class, it was one of the hardest classes I took in my college career. It taught me

different ways to think of many concepts involving time and perspective that I never thought I

would think about before. The problem-solving skills that I had to teach myself and learn from

the professor really pushed me to my limit on how to view the world in a different perspective.

Thinking about every little detail in a reading and how it can take different perspectives in

different ways of thinking can help me in the field of engineering when it comes to thinking of

every little detail possible before delivering a final product. Not only that, but it can also help me

look at our product in a different way and help me think of way on how I can add to it so that it

can fit any sort of ideal and concept that other engineers may have overlooked.

I took many other general elective classes during my college career, but I believe that

these two classes had the biggest impact on me. These are skills that it would have been harder to

learn in other classes since many of the engineering courses here at ISU are a lot of skilled based

classes and don’t teach you how to think of different things in different ways.
