Calling all 21st century educators:


• Are you ready to assess and bring forth the challenge and the beauty of learning to
today’s generation of learners?
• Are you truly capable of improving your student’s understanding and the young people’s
experience and bring education alive for them?
• Are you able to give learners the opportunity to work in their preferred ways of learning?
• Do you want to improve your lessons with more flexibility and choice or improved
quality of delivery?
• Do you want to save time and plan more effectively in getting the result that would
develop the learner’s true capability?
• Do you want to improve on how you engage with your learners and be able to assimilate
all information not just during the exams but rather also in the real world setting?
If you answer ‘yes’ to any of these questions, then hear me out.
THE EDUCATION OF TODAY IS … OUTDATED
You see, children may learn information or acquire different abilities, and I’m sure teachers are
creating multitude of ways to enhance their capacity but in reality… students aren’t developing
as they should be. Your learners should already be engaging with multitude of ways of
understanding and developing knowledge both in and out of school. Are you sure that in today’s
method of assessment could truly gauge out what they are truly capable of?
Well there is a simple solution for that, it is by integrating with technology. You see with the
emersion of technology it brought forth a drastic amount of innovation and advancement to
mostly everything, and as a result, development. Technology opens up huge opportunities for
you – in teaching, assessment, planning and in engaging students and the wider community.
And for you as an educator you can take advantage of this by integrating technology in
developing a wider range of professional teaching skills, in supporting your planning, in the
curriculum to enhance and extend learning, in communicating information and concepts in high
quality lessons, in exploring complex ideas and information, in assessing students and tracking
their progress, in storing and analyzing student’s for formative and summative assessment data,
in clearing your personal targets for in your performance review, in reviewing your own
assessment results and in effective use of assessment in learning, teaching and management.
But how can incorporate technology help in the assessment and development of our students. ?
Well technology can help in
• Planning teaching and learning across a broad and balanced curriculum
• Reusing, adapting and sharing assessment documents
• storing and analyzing pupil data for formative and summative assessment
• identifying and addressing their professional development and needs
• Responding to emerging technologies and practice.
Research now shows that great learning assessment can help to in:
• motivating learners and keep them engaged in learning

• personalize learning and giving learners a voice
• making difficult and abstract concepts easier to explore

• opening up dialogue with students and extend learning
• making learners partners in their formal learning
• Assessing students beyond their capabilities.

• providing adaptive solutions for learners with special needs
• creating a learning environment where learners feel safe and secure
• Extending learning and work in partnership with parents, families and the community.
We use student assessment data to guide changes in instruction and practice, and to improve
student learning with greater flexibility and choice of lessons and teaching techniques

We, 21st century teachers, should have modern assessment and reporting systems in place.
These help them understand, identify and meet the needs of the learner. We need to use
technology regularly and consistently to in the assessment to:
• support their professional judgement
• track pupil progress
• monitor learners to ensure their use of technology is safe, legal and responsible
• Communicate with parents/ careers, sharing information in online conversation.

Consider how you expose learners to a range of technologies and develop their skills to use
them within their everyday learning.
• Do you have high expectations of all learners and outcomes when learning and
evaluating them?
• Do your learners have personalized, creative and independent learning experiences
before assessing them?
• Do you use all your capabilities to provide solutions to support learners with special
needs?
• Do you offer wider opportunities for learners to use assessment to continue and/or
extend learning beyond school?
• Do your learners have an understanding of safety and responsible on and offline
behavior?
• Do you manage assessment flexibly to ensure your learners have access to a wide range
of resources; in a variety of situations, when needed?
• And finally do you use the right assessment to support and extend learning beyond
school?

ALWAYS REMEMBER you are a teacher who is also a learning mediator, a leader, an
administrator, a researcher, and a lifelong learner. A teacher who assess, interpret and design the
learning programs and a subject specialist for your student’s learning areas. Be responsible in
executing the learning plan and prepare appropriately the assigned evaluation and assessment
for your students. Assess students to grow, not just to know if they were listening to you.
