FILIPINO FOLK DANCES

Prayer of thanksgiving and invocation for protection. The Dugso of

the Manobos in Bukidnon, is danced during harvest time and
upon the birth of a male heir. Colorful costumes and ornaments
enhance the appearance of the participants: women wearing
feathered headdress and plaid costumes steps rhythmically, some
using bell anklets as the sole accompaniment, to punctuate their
movements, others use bamboo drums, still others, bamboo
guitars. A fire is lit in the belief that the smoke will carry the offering
up to the gods.

DUGSO BINANOGBANOG The binanog is inspired from the

movement of a "banog," a Filipino term for eagle derived from
"tabanog" or kite. A courtship dance, it portrays the flight of the
bird through lively choregraphy with hands and legs. Just like how
a male banog follows a female banog, the male dancer must be
observant on the changes of the girl dancer's steps in order to
pursue her.

the church. OBANDO KUMINTANG The kumintang is the name given to
several distinct styles, techniques and forms in music and dance
probably originating in the areas used by early Spanish cartographers
and chronicles to denote a large province centering around what is known as Batangas.

The sakuting dance, originally performed solely by boys, portrays a

mock fight using sticks. A sakuting stick is striped or bamboo and is
about 1½ feet long and tapered at the end, like a candle. Its original
use was for combat training

TINIKLING Tinikling is a traditional Philippine folk dance which

originated during the Spanish colonial era. The dance involves two
people beating, tapping, and sliding bamboo poles on the ground
and against each other in coordination with one or more dancers
who step over and in between the poles in a dance.

The Philippines enjoys a rich cultural heritage which includes a diverse collection of
traditional dances. From the well-known national dance the Tinikling, which pays homage to
the movements of a much-loved bird, to dances that reflect elements of daily Philippine life,
these folk dances all offer a glimpse into the history of the country.

MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY

MODERN DANCE – was developed in the early 1900s, the time when dancers came out
against the stiffness and restraints of classical ballet. It created its own techniques, costumes,
shoes, and gave more attention to self-expression and individual creativity rather than
technical expertise. It allows dancers and choreographers to create steps using their moods
and emotions producing a more relaxed dance style.

CONTEMPORARY DANCE – may include techniques that are found in ballet and modern
dance such as floor work, fall and recovery, improvisation, even incorporating yoga, pilates,
and martial arts together with techniques introduced by such famous dancers as Graham,
Hawkins, Horton, and Cunningham. PHOTO CREDITS: [Link]

BALLROOM (RECREATIONAL & COMPETITIVE

Ballroom dance is a set of partner dances, which are enjoyed both socially and
competitively around the world. Ballroom dance is also widely enjoyed on (stage, film, and
television.) The term 'ballroom dancing' is derived from the word ball which in turn originates
from the Latin word ballare which means 'to dance' (a ball-room being a large room specially
designed for such dances). The definition of ballroom dance also depends on the era: balls
have featured popular dances of the day such as the Minuet, Quadrille, Polonaise,Polka,
Mazurka, and others, which are now considered to be historical dances.

originated in Britain and spread to the United States where it remains most common, but has
also become popular in other parts of the world, such as Europe, Central America, Australia,

New Zealand, Canada, and Asia.

HIP-HOP AND STREET DANCE

Hip Hop dance originated from a cultural movement that began in 1970’s New York. The
movement also includes Djing, rapping, and graffiti. The Hip Hop dance style incorporates
locking, popping, breakin, house and more recently krumping, which are all stand alone
individual dance forms in themselves. Hip Hop dance is very energetic, expressive,
improvisational and social. A direct opposite of traditional dance forms such as Ballet, Jazz
and Tap that were taught in dance studios and establishments.

HIP-HOP AND STREET DANCE

Street dance evolved from Hip Hop dance as the term ‘street’ comes from the fact that the
dance style didn’t originate in dance studios but on the streets and clubs among groups of
people. Street dance also incorporates into it other dance styles such as Jazz, Contemporary
and more making it more accessible to everyone. It is the most predominantly featured style
of dance in the music videos of some of the biggest artists in the world such as Usher, Justin
Timberlake, Pussycat Dolls and more.

Latin American culture has significantly influenced ballroom dance styles like the Cha-Cha and Samba through the infusion of its vibrant rhythmic patterns, energetic movements, and cultural expressions. The Cha-Cha, originating from Cuba, embodies the lively and rhythmic spirit of Latin music and dance, characterized by its syncopated steps . Samba, with its roots in Brazilian tradition, reflects the cultural and musical nuances of Brazilian festivals, showcasing fast-paced, fluid hip movements connected to the beats of Samba music . These styles highlight the cultural richness and diversity of Latin America, bringing their distinctive flair into ballroom dancing and expanding its global appeal.

Dance is considered both an art form and a form of physical exercise because it encompasses aesthetic expression and artistic creativity while also engaging the body in vigorous physical activity. As an art form, dance allows for creative expression through choreography and performance, where dancers can convey emotions and cultural stories using movement . As a form of physical exercise, dance involves the full body's movement, increasing flexibility, strength, and cardiovascular health . Dance styles like Zumba and hip-hop are incorporated into workout routines for their fitness benefits while simultaneously providing an artistic outlet for expression . Thus, dance uniquely combines artistic and exercise elements, blending physical prowess with creative endeavors.

Traditional dance forms like Kathakali differentiate from modern dance styles through distinctive attributes such as their historical and cultural roots, performance techniques, and symbolic expression. Kathakali, originating from Kerala, India, is a classical dance-drama known for its vivid makeup, elaborate costumes, and intricate facial expressions and gestures, all of which contribute to storytelling . In contrast, modern dance styles such as contemporary or hip-hop emphasize improvisation, personal expression, and fusion of techniques without adhering to traditional narrative structures or cultural symbolism . Thus, while traditional dance forms focus on preserving cultural heritage and narratives, modern dance styles prioritize innovation and personal artistic expression.

Dance has evolved to reflect modern societal trends and technological advancements through the integration of contemporary styles and digital media. Modern dance styles such as hip-hop and breakdancing emerged from urban environments, reflecting societal shifts toward more fluid, individualistic forms of expression . With technological advancements, dance has embraced multimedia presentations, utilizing lighting, digital effects, and online platforms to reach wider audiences and facilitate virtual performances. The incorporation of video-sharing platforms has also democratized dance, providing exposure to a global audience and inspiring new hybrid styles . Thus, dance continues to evolve by integrating modern cultural trends and technological innovations.

Dance festivals contribute to the global appreciation and understanding of diverse dance forms by serving as platforms where varied styles are showcased, celebrated, and explored. These festivals often feature performances from regional, national, or international dance companies, offering exposure to a range of cultural expressions and traditions . Additionally, dance festivals foster cross-cultural exchanges and learning opportunities as dancers and audiences gain insights into techniques and histories of unfamiliar dance forms. By celebrating the artistry and creativity of different dance styles, festivals promote cultural diversity and inclusivity, encouraging audience members to appreciate the richness and complexity of global dance traditions .

Dance therapies utilize the properties of dance to promote healing and mental well-being by engaging participants in movement to enhance physical, emotional, and psychological health. The expressive nature of dance allows individuals to explore their emotions and body awareness, facilitating the release of stress and tension. Through structured rhythmic movement, participants can develop a deeper connection to their bodies, enhancing self-confidence and personal expression . Moreover, dance therapy sessions often encourage social interaction, promoting community and support that is beneficial for mental health. Consequently, dance therapy is increasingly recognized as an effective holistic approach to promoting overall well-being.

Cultural influences play a significant role in the development and transformation of dance styles worldwide by merging different ethnic dance forms and creating new ones. This cultural amalgamation transforms dance into a dynamic form of expression that reflects societal changes and cross-cultural interactions. For instance, ballroom dancing, originally a style for the privileged classes in Germany, has evolved and spread globally to include variations like the Tango and the Waltz, each incorporating unique elements from different cultures . Similarly, the Cha-Cha is a Latin-American dance that combines rhythmic movements typical of its cultural origin . Hence, dance continually evolves through cultural exchanges that lead to the innovation of new styles and the transformation of traditional ones.

The historical origin of ballroom dance reflects social class distinctions as it was initially a pastime for the privileged classes and social elites in Europe, particularly noted in Germany . In its early days, ballroom dance was exclusively performed in high society gatherings, with strict dress codes and formalized dance etiquettes that signified status and class distinction. Over time, as it gained popularity worldwide, ballroom dance became more accessible, evolving into various styles like the Tango and Waltz, and entering mainstream entertainment where it transcends its class-bound origins . Despite its democratization, certain characteristics of ballroom dance, such as its elegance and formality, continue to evoke its aristocratic legacy.

Dance functions as a non-verbal communication tool by allowing individuals to express emotions, tell stories, and convey cultural values without the use of words. It utilizes movements that are both deliberate and fluid to communicate feelings and narrative elements. For example, dance styles like ballet and modern dance often portray a story or an emotion through choreography, costume, and props, creating a visual narrative that an audience can interpret . Additionally, traditional dances like Kathakali in India use exaggerated gestures and facial expressions as part of the storytelling technique, effectively conveying emotions and stories to the audience . Thus, dance transcends language barriers by using the body to communicate universally understood themes and ideas.

Dance plays a crucial role in various cultures as part of rituals and celebrations, often serving as a medium for religious expression, communal bonding, and cultural representation. Traditional dances like India's Garba is performed during religious festivals and is part of community gathering . Similarly, the Bhangra dance from Punjab is both a cultural and celebratory dance performed during significant cultural events and ceremonies . In Spain, flamenco dance accompanies celebrations and is a symbol of cultural identity . These dances enhance communal spirit and cultural visibility and offer an avenue for cultural preservation and continuity.
