Three Phase Induction Motor Tests

The document describes three tests performed on a three-phase induction motor: the no-load test, locked rotor test, and winding resistance test. The no-load test determines the motor's core loss and no-load current across different voltages. The locked rotor test measures copper losses, power factor, and impedance. The winding resistance test finds the resistance of each motor winding.

EXPERIMENT NUMBER THREE

THREE PHASE INDUCTION MOTOR

INTRODUCTION
Three phase AC induction motor is a rotating electric machine that is designed to operate on
three phase supply. This motor is also called as asynchronous motor. These Ac motor are of two
types: squirrel cage and slip ring induction motors. But in this experiment we were dealing with
squirrel cage induction motor.

Test of Induction Motor

The no-load test, the blocked rotor test and winding resistance test are three main induction
motor tests, which are performed on induction motor to know the different losses, power factor
and efficiency and tempera of the induction motor.

No load test of three phase induction motor

The no load test of 3 phase induction motor is performed on induction motor when it is running
without load. Since the motor is running without load, P.F of the motor is low less than 0.5.

Objectives

The main objectives of no load test of induction motor was to determine determine the core loss
Po, and no load current Io of the machine against the Applied voltage.

 2Wattmeter
 Multimeter
 Clamp meter
 (3phaseVariac (variable supply)

Locked Rotor Test of Induction Motor

Locked Rotor Test of Induction Motor is performed by locking the rotor (by keeping the rotor
not to rotate). The blocked rotor test is performed to estimate parameters that affect machine’s
Performance under load such as its leakage impedance.
Starting with zero voltages across the stator, the applied voltage is gradually increased in steps
until the full load current is circulated.

Objectives

The main objectives of Locked Rotor Test of Induction Motor is to determine copper losses,
power factor at short circuit current; total equivalent resistance and reactance.

EQUIPMENTAND COMPONENTS
 2Wattmeter
 Multimeter
 Clamp meter
 (3phaseVariac (variable supply)
 3phase induction motor
 Connecting wires
 Pulley (Rotor blocking device)

Circuit diagram
Procedures of performing experiment

1. Connect the device as shown above.

2. Adjust the Variac at zero position.
3. Change the ranges of all the instruments for block rotor test as suggest in the Discussion
on circuit diagram.
4. Block the rotor either by tightening the belt firmly or by hand.
5. Switch-on the ac supply and apply reduced voltage, so that the input current drawn by the
motor under blocked rotor condition is equal to the full load current of the motor.
6. Record the readings of all the meters, connected in the circuit.

winding resistance test

This measurement can be carried out at the terminals of the machine, with bridge system or
voltmeter method. In this case the dc power supply is given by dc variable line of the bench.

Objectives

The objectives of this test is to determine the winding resistance of the 3phase induction motor.

EQUIPMENT AND COMPONENTS

 Power supply variable line (0 to 500 d.c)
 Induction motor
 Multimeter
 Clamp meter
 Connecting wires

Procedures of performing experiment

1. Connect the circuit as indicated above

2. Supply the circuit with dc variable supply
3. Connect the positive wire to U1 then start to vary the supply until you obtain the current of
rated or nearest rated current
4. Measure the current and voltage for U1 using clamp meter and Multimeter
5. Repeated procedure number 4 for V1 and W1, then formulate the table of result.
