Aside from their original definitions, what makes Na
and Cl bond ionic? Why can’t you consider it a covalent
bond? Vice versa

• The first word or symbol to be used should be the
name or symbol of the less electronegative element.
• For forming of compounds, the valence electrons of
the metal will become the subscript number of the
nonmetal while the valence electrons of the
nonmetal will become the subscript number of the
metal.

• Binary ionic compounds can only have empirical
formulas except for 𝐻𝑔2+2
with peroxide and peroxides
with any metal of +1 valence electrons.
• The first word or symbol to be used should be the name
or symbol of the less electronegative element.
• For forming of compounds, the valence electrons of the

Oxoanions – are anions containing oxygen
• Nonmetallic Oxoanions
If an anion can only have two possible combinations with O,
then, the one with the lower O number will have the suffix
“-ite” while the higher O will have the suffix “-ate”.
NO2‒ Nitrite CO22‒ Carbonite
NO3‒ Nitrate CO32‒ Carbonate
PO33‒ Phosphite SeO32‒ Selenite
PO43‒ Phosphate SeO42‒ Selenate

Oxoanions – are anions containing oxygen
• Halogen Oxoanions
If an anion have 4 possible combinations with O, the anion with
the most number of O will have a prefix “per-“ and a suffix “-
ate”. The next low number of O will have a suffix “-ate”. The
next lower number of O will have the suffix “-ite”, and the least
number of O will have the prefix “hypo-“ and a suffix “-ite”.
ClO4‒ Perchlorate
ClO3‒ Chlorate
ClO2‒ Chlorite
ClO‒ Hypochlorite
