the theme of the photos presented.
M U O A I P C I L T T I L N

Linking Statement
Were you able to guess the word that fits with the theme of the photos presented above?
Multiplication is one of the fundamental operations in Mathematics. You will be using the
multiplication and division to get the product and quotient of the polynomials. Today, we are going
to multiply and divide polynomials. You will work with a partner.
II. GUIDED INSTRUCTION
Essential bits of instructions
Directions: Read the following concept notes then after that answer the checking for
understanding.
Steps in Multiplying Polynomials
1. Multiply the coefficients.
2. Multiply the variables using the product rule, 𝑎𝑚 • 𝑎𝑛 = 𝑎𝑚+𝑛
Examples:
1. Multiply 5x and 2x + 4.
Solution:
5x(2x + 4)
= 5x(2x) + 5x(4) Distributive Law
= 10𝑥 1+1 + 20 Product of Powers Law
= 10𝑥 2 + 20
2. Multiply 5x – 3 and 2𝑥 2 – 6x + 4
Solution:
(5x – 3)( 2𝑥 2 – 6x + 4)
= 5x(2𝑥 2 ) + 5x(-6x) +5x(4) – 3(2𝑥 2 ) –3(-6x) –3(4)
= 10𝑥 1+2 – 30𝑥 1+1 + 20x – 6𝑥 2 + 18x – 12
= 10𝑥 3 – 30𝑥 2 –6𝑥 2 + 20x + 18x – 12
= 10𝑥 3 – 36𝑥 2 + 38x – 12
A vertical format in multiplying polynomials is useful when both factors contain 2 or more terms. Each
term in the upper factor is multiplied by each term in the lower factor. Similar terms are written in the same
column.
Example:
1. Multiply 6x and 3x – 4.
Solution:
5x – 3
x 2x + 4
10𝑥 2 – 6x Multiply 2x and 5x, then 2x and -3.
+ 20x –12 Multiply 4 and 5x, then 4 and -3
10𝑥 2 + 14x – 12 Combine similar terms.
The FOIL method is only applicable in multiplying binomials.
FOIL stands for:
F- First terms
O-Outer or Outside terms
I-Inner or Inside terms
L-Last terms
Example:
1. Multiply 2x + 3 and 4x – 5 using the FOIL method.
Solution:
F = (2x)(4x) = 8𝑥 2
O = (2x)(-5) = -10x
I = (3)(4x) = 12x
L= (3)(-5) = -15
Thus, (2x + 3)(4x – 5) = 𝟖𝒙𝟐 – 10x + 12x – 15 = 𝟖𝒙𝟐 + 2x – 15.
Steps in Dividing a Polynomial by a Monomial
1. Divide each term of the polynomial by the monomial.
𝒂𝒎
2. Apply the law = 𝒂𝒎−𝒏 if m > n or
𝒂𝒏
𝒂𝒎 𝟏
= 𝒂𝒏−𝒎 if n > m in dividing the same variable.

3. Simplify the results, if necessary.

a. product of two binomials.
b. product of the sum and difference of two terms.
c. square of binomials
d. cube of a binomial.
e. product of a binomial and a trinomial

- It presents you with four pictures and then tasks you with guessing what specific
word fits with the theme of the photos presented.
A R G B E L A
1. How did you get your answer?
___________________________________________________________________________
Linking Statement
Were you able to guess the word that fits with the theme of the photos
presented above? What is an algebra? Today, we are going to use models
and algebraic methods to find the product of two binomials, product of the
sum and difference of two terms, square of binomials, cube of a binomial
and product of a binomial and a trinomial. You will work with a partner.
II. GUIDED INSTRUCTION
Essential bits of instructions
The product of the sum and difference of two terms such as a and b is
(a + b)(a – b) = 𝑎2 −ab + ab – 𝑏2
= 𝑎2 −– 𝑏 2
The product of the sum and difference of two terms has no middle term. Hence, it is a
BINOMIAL.
Example:
Find the product of (3x + 2)(3x – 2).
Solution:
(3x + 2)(3x – 2) =(3𝑥)2 – (2)2– = 9𝑥 2 – - 4
The cube of a binomial ( a + b ) is the sum of four terms where each term can be obtained as
follows:
First Term: The cube of a
Second Term: Three times the product of 𝑎2 and b Third Term:
Third Term: Three times the product of a and 𝑏2
Fourth Term: The cube of b
For all numbers a and b:
(𝑎 + 𝑏)3 = 𝑎3 + 3𝑎2 b + 3a𝑏2 + 𝑏3
(𝑎 − 𝑏)3 = 𝑎3 - 3𝑎2 b + 3a𝑏2 - 𝑏3
Example:
(2𝑥 + 5)3
First Term: (2𝑥)3 = 8𝑥 3
Second Term: 3(2𝑥)2 (5) = 3(4x2 )(5) = 60𝑥 2
Third Term: 3(2x) (5)2 = 3(2x)(25) = 150x
Fourth Term: (5)3 = 125
So, (2𝑥 + 5)3= 8𝑥 3 + 60𝑥 2 + 150x + 125.

Essential bits of instructions
Directions: Read the following concept notes then after that answer the checking
for understanding activity.
TYPES OF WORD PROBLEMS
1. Age problem are word problem that deal with the ages of people currently, in the past, or
the future.
2. Coin problems are word problems that involve coins, pennies, and other money matter.
3. Consecutive integer problems are word problems that involve consecutive integers.
4. Investment problems are problems usually involve simple annual interest.
5. Mixture problems are word problems where quantities of different values are mixed
together.
6. Work problems are word problems involving rate of work.
7. Distance Problems are word problems that deals with directions.
To solve a word problem, one must know how to formulate an equation. These are the steps
to follow when formulating an equation and finding its solution:
1. Read and explore the problem. Choose the variable to represent the unknown in the
problem.
2. Use this variable in writing the expressions for other unknown numbers in the
problem.
3. Read the problem again and decide how the unknown number relates to the known
information in the problem.
4. Write or formulate an equation to represent the relationship.
5. Solve the equation for the unknown.
6. Check the solution obtained using the original statement.
Example: (Age Problem)
Problem:
Rai is 28 years older than his son, John. Twelve years ago he was eight times as old as
his son. Find the present age of each
Solution:
Let x be the present age of john. Since Rai is 28 years older than his son; then his age
is x + 28. Let us write the given information in a table.
present age age 12 years ago
John X x-12
Rai x + 28 (x+28)-12
“Twelve years ago he was eight times as old as John.” In other words, Rai’s age 12 years ago
was eight times John’s age 12 years ago. Thus, the equation is (x + 28)- 12 = 8(x-12)
Let us solve the equation.
a. (x + 28) - 12 = 8(x-12)
x + 16 = 8x -96
x - 8x = -96 - 16
−7𝑥 −112
=
−7 −7
x = 16
b. x +28 = 16 + 28
x = 44
Therefore, John is 16 years old now while Rai is 44 years old. Check the answer obtained in
the original problem.
