Chapter- 3 Large Numbers
3.1Indian & International System of Numeration.
 Largest 4 digit number is 9999( Nine thousand nine hundred ninety nine) .When we
add 1 to this we will get 10000(Ten thousand) ,smallest 5 digit number & new place
in place value chart TTh.
 Largest 5 digit number is 99999(Ninety nine thousand nine hundred ninety
nine).When we add 1 to this we get 100000(One Lakh)& new place in place value
chart L.
So, the next places in place value chart are

 For ease of reading & writing large numbers; places in place value chart are divided in
to groups or periods & periods are separated by commas.
 On the basis of different methods used to divide periods in to groups we have
INDIAN SYSTEM OF NUMERATION & INTERNATIONAL SYSYTEM OF NUMERATION
 Indian System of Numeration: First Period made up of 3 Places(O,T,H) next all periods
made up of two places each. This system is used in India only.

So ,a number 487489123 will be written as 48,74,89,123 and read as Forty eight crore
seventy four lakh eighty nine thousand one hundred twenty three.
 International System of Numeration: Every period made up of three places in place
value chart. This system is used worldwide. Places in this system have separate
names too.
