Good morning, I am the scientist Carlos Serna,

in this video I will present my thesis to the


University of California, on paper. Paper is made
from cellulose fibers found in wood. When that
fiber is used for the first time it is called virgin
fiber and when we recover it through recycling
and reuse it as a raw material for papermaking,
we call it recycled fiber. But it is actually the
same fiber at different times in its life cycle.

Obtaining wood and debarking


The raw material used is wood and to obtain it it
is necessary to cut trees and remove all the
branches to leave only the main trunk. Then the
bark is removed from the trunk to be able to
move on to the next step of production.

Fiber and pulp


The logs are cut into small pieces to obtain their
vegetable fibers. Through treatments with
chemical products, that fiber ends up being
transformed into a paste that will be what finally
ends up being a sheet of paper.

Whitening
The paste obtained must be washed, filtered
and dried. All this with the aim of being able to
reach the bleaching process so that the color of
the paper is the desired one. Later the pasta will
dry and release the water it contains.

Pressing
The pulp is fed into rotating rollers in order to
obtain the desired thickness for the paper being
manufactured. During this step, marks can also
be printed on the paper, although this varies
from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Drying
Once pressed, the paste goes to drying. This
step is done with hot rollers that apply heat to
the paper so that it is 100% dry and free of
moisture.

Finish
After all these steps, the paper will be practically
ready. You will only have to pass the paper
through cold rollers that give it the final finish
and provide it with the right shine.
Once all the steps in the manufacture of the
paper have been completed, it is usually wound
up and transported to cut the paper according to
the size required. Subsequently, it is packed and
transported for its use.
