Understanding Planetary Orbits in the Solar System

The document discusses planets and how they orbit stars or stellar remnants. It mentions that Ptolemy originally thought planets orbited Earth, but Galileo's telescope observations and Kepler's analyses of data corrected by Tycho Brahe found that planets actually have elliptical orbits around the sun.

SOLAR SYSTEM

A planet is an astronomical body orbiting a

star or stellar remnant that is massive enough
to be rounded by its own gravity,it is not
massive enough to cause thermonuclear
fusion and according to the international
astronomical union but not all planetary
scientists have cleared its neighbouring
region of planetesimals the planets were
thought by(Ptolemy)to orbit Earth in different
and epicycle motions, although the idea that
the planets orbited the sun had been
suggested many times,it was not until the 17th
century that this view was supported by
evidence from the first telescope
astronomical observations performed
by(GALILEO DI VINCENZO BONAIUTI DE
GALILEO)about the same time, by careful
analyses of preteliscoping observational data
corrected by(tycho brahe),(johannes kepler)
found the planets orbits were elliptical rather
than circular.
