Men and women continue to face disparities in benefiting from, and contributing to

different aspects in living standards. Although being top ranked in terms of gender equality,
Philippines’ ranking is debatable. Barriers still exist, such as gender inequality, sex work,
sexuality, gender roles, and etc., which have been a commonality in our country. In addition to
this, media has played a great role in influencing gender. Wherein, media tends to stereotype
men and women in different ways. Especially, media sets the standards amongst men and
women. In this case, people fight for the rights of both genders, with consideration to
genderqueer. Which resulted to the formation of social gender movements.
With regards to women, the Philippine Commission on Women, an agency run by the
government of the Philippines, is one of the institutions which protects the rights of women in
the Philippines. The said institution greatly contributes to women overcoming barriers, whereas
the project namely, Magna Carta for Women, promotes gender equality, as well as participation
on the society. On the other hand, the LGBTQ movement along with other social movements,
aims to improve the rights of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender, and genderqueers. They also
aim to make job opportunities be inclusive and open in terms of work positions, to fight the
discrimination they are suffering from, and the involvement of all individuals to the community
they belong to. Although always being in conflict, they fight while considering the Philippine
Constitution which supports all people’s dignity, equality, and human rights.
As of today, Philippines continues to promote gender equality through a comprehensive
strategy of gender mainstreaming. Despite the country’s ranking being debatable, the country
and its people continue to implement gender projects and improve the well-being of all
individuals. In line to this, the Philippines’ institutional framework continues to provide a good
implementation and enforcement in promoting gender equality. However, there are still key
challenges which needs to be addressed in order to eliminate gender inequality across all aspects
of life.
