CUEVAS FILIPINO 1 A UNDERSTANDING THE SELF

ACTIVITY 1

FOR REFLECTION p.4

1. Reflect on Socrates’ statement “The unexamined life is not worth living.” Have you ever spent
time examining your life? Is it really worth your time? Why or why not?
- We learn new things when we are born, and we can learn a lot from our experiences.
So long as I'm living, I'll be searching for the meaning of my existence. Till' the day that I
can say “this is what we called life”, and for me my presence in this world is worth living
for.

APPLICATION AND ASSESSMENT p.5

FOR RESEARCH

1. You must heard of the Socratic teaching method. What is this teaching method? Is this traced to
Socrates?
- The Socratic Method involves a shared dialogue between teacher and students. The
teacher leads by posing thought-provoking questions. Students actively engage by
asking questions of their own. The aim is to probe the underlying beliefs upon which
each participant’s statements, arguments and assumptions are built.

FOR REFLECTION p.12

Do you have to wait until it is too late like what St. Augustine said: “Too late have I found you, O
God!
- There are many opportunities for us to seize, but we must take them seriously. Don't
waste our time on things that aren't going to help us. Put our attention on a path that
can lead us to success.

FOR RESEARCH p.12

Research on the life of at least one person either in the past or at present who gave up her/his
material possession that others may live better lives. Share that brief biography in class.
- Toni Gonzaga recently interviewed Robin Padilla for her vlog. Many people are shocked
to discover that Padilla does not have a lot of money or savings, despite the fact that he
is a well-known actor. The reason for this is that whenever he has a lot of money, most
of it comes from people who can't afford to buy food.

FOR REFLECTION p.14

For Descartes, the human mind is given emphasis over body and passion. Reflect on moments
when passion overpowered your reason. We’re you happy with the consequences? Any lesson
learned?
- Such a situation occurs frequently for me. For example, I enter a music or art contest to
improve my grades. Discovering our strengths and potential is a result of attempting
something new.
FOR RESEARCH p.14

Research on emotional learning. Does this mean that emotions have a role to play in learning?
Does this prove that emotions do not make us less thinking human beings?
- Humans have a wide range of senses, and we can’t learn without using our emotions as
a foundation for learning. It’s impossible to learn if you’re depressed. As a result, our
emotions are very important to us, and they are often the driving force behind our
actions.

FOR RESEARCH p.32

Read a research on the effect of teachers/parents/friends on the development of self-concept.

Share the research findings in class.
- Positive connections between parents and teachers have been shown to improve
children’s academic achievement, social competencies and emotional well-being. When
parents and teachers work as partners, children do better in school and at home.

FOR REFLECTION p.32

Is my self-concept affected by how others perceive me? Do I contribute to the development of

others’ positive self-concept?
- There are times when it appears that everyone expects me to finish my studies, yet it ap
pears that no one wants to help me. It is very frustrating when I do good things and no o
ne notices me, but when I do bad things everyone recognizes me. Some of the time, I giv
e advice to those who need it, especially to my friends who are feeling down or discoura
ged.

FOR REFLECTION p.39

1. Like the anthropologist, let us view persons and cultures historically, hence no feeling of
enthocenrism nor xenocentrism. Have you been in some ways ethnocentric or
xenocentric?
- Yes, As a result of my lack of emotional maturity, I believe that all white Americans are
good and black Americans are bad. Now I realize that physical appearance, cultures,
dialects are not the first thing to see to judge a person, we must base in everyone’s
heart and kindness.

2. The egocentric self tells you “Be true to yourself.” Have you always been true to yourself?
If you have been, has it been always easy?

- I always pretend to be someone other than myself for fear of being rejected by others if
I reveal my true self. In the morning, you’ll see me smiling, but at night, when I’m alone in
my room, anxiety takes over.
FOR RESEARCH p.39

Analyze the song “My Way”. With which does this song go – the anthropologist’s egocentric self
or the sociocentric self? Why?
- It's clear from the song's lyrics that the writer is a self-sufficient and self-centered
individual who can do things on his own without the help of others. This is a song for the
egocentric self, because it shows how this man is invulnerable and self-centered.

FOR REFLECTION p.42

Which of the 3 provinces of the mind-id, ego, super ego have been dominant in your daily life
for this year and the past year? Any plan to improve? How?
- The part of me that I want to improve is my ego; even though I'm confident in myself, I
think it's not enough. So, I decided to enroll in a course that would boost my self-
esteem.

FOR RESEARCH p.42

Freud claimed, “The ego is not master in it’s own house.” What does his mean?
- Meaning that the conscious Ego is not in charge of its own destiny, as opposed to being
ruled by unconscious Id impulses. In reality, we respond to reality as presented by the
Ego. But because the Id creates our desires and wants, it will always be in control. The
Ego would be nothing if it didn't have the Id.

FOR RESEARCH p.51

Which belief do you adhere to – human person as a body-spirit unity or as a dualism of body and
spirit?
- There’s no doubt, then, that the human person is a unity of body and soul in its human
nature. Despite the fact that the soul is spiritual and does not have any physical parts
that can age and decay, it is not the supernatural spirit that comes from God.
Are you part of nature? Or are you the master of nature? Which between these thoughts brings
harmony in the world?
- Mastering nature gives us the opportunity to protect and preserve it. While it’s nice to
be able to control nature, we do everything we can to make it the best it can be, and to
make the most of it.

FOR REFLECTION p.51

Left brain versus right brain in a human person – with findings in Neurobiology, does this hold
true still? What does research say?
- Neuroscientists have found no proof that this theory is correct. Magnetic resonance
imaging of 1,000 people revealed that the human brain doesn’t favor one side over the
other. The two hemispheres are tied together by bundles of nerve fibers, creating an
information highway.

Common questions

According to Freudian theory, the Id drives desires and wants that are unconscious, exerting influence on the Ego, which attempts to mediate these desires within reality . The Superego adds moral judgment to the decision-making process. As such, decisions are a result of the constant interaction and negotiation between these three components, with the Ego trying to balance the often conflicting demands of the Id and the restrictions of the Superego .

Mastering nature allows humans to protect and preserve it, leading to a balance where the environment is nurtured and maintained. This control facilitates the potential for sustainability and ensures that natural resources are responsibly used for the greater good, promoting harmony .

Contemporary research using magnetic resonance imaging has debunked the theory of left-brain versus right-brain dominance, showing no evidence that individuals favor one hemisphere of the brain over the other . Instead, the hemispheres are connected by bundles of nerve fibers, working together as an integrated system to facilitate complex cognitive tasks .

The Socratic Teaching Method, historically traced back to Socrates, fosters critical thinking by engaging students in a shared dialogue where the teacher poses thought-provoking questions, encouraging students to actively participate by questioning their own beliefs and assumptions . This method is designed to help uncover the underlying beliefs and assumptions in each participant's statements, leading to deeper understanding and development of critical thinking skills .

The song "My Way" embodies an egocentric perspective by celebrating self-sufficiency and independence, emphasizing that the individual takes pride in accomplishing things without relying on others . This suggests an approach to life that values personal agency and self-reliance, often prioritizing individual desires and accomplishments over collaborative or communal efforts .

Emotions are foundational to learning as they greatly influence motivation, attention, and memory. Emotional states can affect the ability to process information and recall, with depression, for example, hindering the learning process significantly . Emotions help drive actions and responses, playing a crucial role in overall cognitive development and influencing how knowledge is acquired and applied .

Positive involvement from parents and teachers has been shown to enhance a child's academic achievement, social competencies, and emotional well-being . Such involvement creates a supportive environment, boosting the child’s self-concept and motivating them to excel both in academic settings and personal development .

Viewing cultures historically helps place them in context, reducing bias by fostering understanding and appreciation of diverse historical experiences and developments . This perspective encourages examining cultures based on their own standards rather than through the lens of one's culture, reducing ethnocentric biases and promoting empathy and cultural appreciation .

Robin Padilla is known for prioritizing the welfare of less fortunate individuals over accumulating personal wealth, often sharing his earnings with those who cannot afford basic necessities like food . This exemplifies a value system that places communal well-being and altruism above personal financial gain, highlighting his commitment to social responsibility and compassion .

Enhancing the Ego can bolster self-esteem by building confidence and supporting a balanced self-image. Methods such as engaging in courses or activities that challenge and develop personal skills are effective, as they promote self-awareness and reinforce an individual’s capability and worth . These activities can provide the Ego with positive reinforcement, encouraging a healthier self-perception .
