President Duterte launched a controversial war on drugs after being elected, giving authorities power to arrest or kill those involved with drugs. The war on drugs resulted in thousands of deaths and drew international criticism for human rights violations. While Duterte's goal was to reduce crime, the extrajudicial killings violated human rights and solved one problem by creating an even larger problem. As a member of the Commission on Human Rights, the author would further investigate the root causes of the drug problem to address it in a way that respects criminals' rights to a fair trial under the law. The drug war must respect human rights and end the practice of killing without evidence.

Before elected as the President, Rodrigo Roa Duterte promised the people a

decrease with the number of crimes during his term. Months after he was elected, he
created the movement against the use and distribution of drugs by giving the
authorities the power to arrest, and even kill those who were caught in act. As we all
know it as the war on drugs.

The war on drugs is undoubtedly one of the most remarkable controversies


during his term. It has made headlines locally and internationally. It also made some
crumble with the country’s relationship to other countries, regional organizations, and
international institution.

The reason why it was such a controversy is the killings. As it continues through
the years, the number of killings also continue to rise. *insert stats*

With these happenings, a lot of groups called this out. One of which is the
Commission on Human Rights (CHR). They’ve been conducting investigations
regarding the events involved on the drug war. It was shown in a documentary where
Jay Taruc accompanied the CHR investigator Jun Nalangan in one case of the extra
judicial killing in Quezon City. He personally witnessed how the investigation was done
and was able to interview ‘Patrick’, a said victim of the event.

Honestly, and obviously, the killings are devastating and very unjust. I believe
that Duterte’s advocacies for the betterment of the country are good, but he uses wrong
ways to make them happen. For instance, this war on drugs. With the amount of lives
lost and the threat of fear to the society, it is clearly a violation of every right of
humans. Just as one said, the ends do not justify the means. The goal to lessen
crimes does not justify the loss of the thousands of lives, without considering their
innocence. It’s like solving a problem with a bigger problem.

“We all have our own versions of truth”. “Every story is double-sided”. As
for the question on who is telling the truth, we’ll never know. I’m just certain that this
has to stop. As long as this continues, problems will just continue to pile up.

If I am a member of the Commission on Human rights, I will further investigate


to know the root cause to be able to address this problem. Criminals or people in
conflict with the law should still be protected by the rights indicated in the Philippines
Criminal Code. They should have the right to be judged fairly and justly in court
without fear of what might happen to them if they speak the sad truth about the
incident. They should be given the right to defend themselves. So in order to stop the
killings to stop the crime, I will dig deeper to see where the problem is coming from.

The extra judicial killings are downright a human rights violation. The
government should remove the power from the authorities, or the agencies assigned in
this operation, to kill without any clear and valid evidences of crime. They should
process this just like every other crime cases in the country. Everyone should be given
the right to defend themselves in the court and be judged for the truth. Because if this
drug war will continue to kill lives, it’s like solving a problem with a bigger problem in
humanity.
REFLECTION
MGA ISYUNG PANG-EKONOMIYA

This module tackled the important roles of citizens to


change the society. As a big part of the country, the hope for the
future lies in our hands. This module helped me because in
order to achieve good change, we should be educated on how to
have a progressive country by understanding the concept and
changes of citizenship over the years.

I was made aware of the human rights that protect and give
power to the citizens. It also taught me the political ways on
how to handle the future of our society. I also learned a lot of all
the social issues regarding citizenship and human rights.
