MOTIVATION LETTER (1st option: Management

Engineering)

I am Reshma Krishnan, an administrative professional from India with a Bachelor’s degree

in Electronics and Communication Engineering. My family consists of my father who is an
electrician by profession working with Kalifa Rashdi Trading Co., my mother who is a homemaker
and my younger sister is pursuing BBA.

I completed my schooling in Oman securing 88 percentage in my 10th standard and 79

percentage in my 12th standard where I choose science as my stream of specialization. Thereafter,
for my higher education I opted for Bachelor of Engineering in Electronics and Communication
which has been a dream choice for me since a long time. In my growing years, my father often
showed me around his workbench scattered with the different components and instruments he
worked with. I was especially fascinated by circuit boards and IC chips. Hence, after my schooling,
I pursued Electronics and Communication Engineering at Birla Institute of Technology in Muscat
wherein I realized that I had a flair for core electronics subjects such as digital electronics,
semiconductor devices and microcontrollers. Moreover, I was able to garner a deeper
understanding of my subjects while tutoring few of my fellow classmates who were not proficient
in English. I graduated with 91.4% and was awarded the merit scholarship for academic excellence
from the University for 3 consecutive years.

While pursuing my Bachelors, I was chosen to lead a team of 5 to present a paper on

‘Intelligent vehicle speed control using embedded RFID traffic signs’ at the 4th National
Symposium on engineering final year projects. While working on such a complex project, we faced
a number of technical challenges and glitches at the beginning. Fortunately, as the team leader, I
was able to guide and motivate my team as a unit in achieving time bound targets. This also gave
me a self-realization that I could also be good at man management and team working.

While at college, I was also actively involved in both internal as well as external non-
academic activities like treasure hunt, card making competitions, trekking trips and student clubs.
For a cultural event organized by my college, I was asked to set up an Indian Village portraying
the different elements of Indian lifestyle. With the limited time and budget that was provided, I
was able to present the vibrancy of the Indian heritage and culture in front of an international
audience.

Following my graduation, I got employed as a junior telecom engineer at National Coast

Trading and Projects, a telecom subcontracting company in Oman. Apart from providing technical
expertise I was also entrusted with project coordination and document controller responsibilities.
Working at a company which had multiple ongoing projects at the time made me realize the
importance of managerial skills in the working environment. In the subsequent years, I worked at
two construction firms, in purchasing and administrative roles which gave me an opportunity to
sharpen my negotiation and interpersonal skills. It was during these two assignments that I realized
that my technical skills alone are not enough for me to realize my career goals and that I needed
additional Managerial skills to be truly called a Techno-Managerial professional in any industry.
MOTIVATION LETTER (1st option: Management
Engineering)

Although I had really enjoyed working for these companies, I always felt that I would get
better job satisfaction if I could work for a cause and decided that I need to make a career in a
stream that would not only enhance my profile but also make meaningful contribution to the
betterment of society and the world as a whole. It was then that the idea of a career in the Energy
sector took shape. I have lived most part of my life in the Middle East. My family relocated to
Oman, an oil rich country near the Arabian Gulf, in search of better prospects. Living in a country
where fuel and electricity were quiet inexpensive, I never gave much thought to the concept of
energy conservation. But whenever I visited my home in India, I saw a contrasting picture – highly
priced fuels, surcharges for the excessive use of electricity and scheduled blackouts every single
day. This got me thinking about how countries that are presently facing energy crisis would survive
in the future with the alarming rate at which fossil fuels are being depleted. Ever since this
realization, I have been intrigued by renewable energy and the vast scope it opens up in building
a sustainable world.

After working as both a telecom engineer and an administrative executive I strongly believe
applying for the Masters program in Management Engineering at Politecnico di Milano should be
the next step in enhancing my expertise in both management and engineering fields. The Energy
and Environment Management specialization in this Masters program is what I am aiming for as
my specialization. Looking at the changing landscape of the towns and cities in my country being
dotted with an increasing number of industries and vehicles, I realized that an apocalyptic future
does not seem far unless alternate sources of energy are considered. I am convinced that renewable
energy is the energy of the future and I would like to be an integral part of building this future.

Therefore as a first step in this direction, I would like to deepen my knowledge and
understanding about how energy efficient operations can be incorporated into manufacturing and
supply-chain and also, how green business models can be designed to achieve environmental and
sustainability compliances. I hope to achieve this by specializing in Energy and Environment
Management at Politecnico di Milano. The comprehensive course structure at Politecnico di
Milano with Innovative teaching on subjects like Energy Management Lab would give me hands
on experience on solving industrial problems. Further down the line, I am keen on obtaining a
Doctorate in Management Engineering and focus on energy sector as there is an immense scope
for research and development in this field.

I would consider it a privilege to study at Politecnico di Milano. I am positive that a Masters

in Management Engineering from this University would add immense value to both my
professional and personal development. I sincerely hope that I would be provided with this
opportunity to realize my career dream at Politecnico di Milano.

For the final year project, my team worked on designing a system that can reduce traffic
accidents due to overspending by using RFID embedded traffic signs and also presented a paper
on ‘Intelligent vehicle speed control using embedded RFID traffic signs’ at the 4 th National
Symposium on engineering final year projects. Working on this project was an eye opener as I
realised the wide scope that this field offers in making our lives more convenient, efficient and
safe.
While at college, I was also actively involved in both internal as well as external non-
academic activities like treasure hunt, card making competitions, trekking trips and student clubs.
Upon graduating, I got employed at National Coast Trading and Projects, a telecom sub-
contracting company in Muscat as junior telecom engineer wherein I was entrusted with the
responsibilities of preparing site survey reports for tower construction, ensuring design
specifications are met and also project coordination. Apart from providing technical expertise I
was also entrusted with project coordination and document controller responsibilities. Working at
a company which had multiple ongoing projects at the time made me realize the importance of
managerial skills in the working environment. Following this, my professional journey took a
different direction. Over the next two years I had the opportunity of working in purchasing and
administrative roles in the construction sector which gave me an opportunity to sharpen my
negotiation and interpersonal skills. It was during these two assignments that I realized that my
technical skills alone are not enough for me to realize my career goals and that I needed additional
Managerial skills to be truly called a Techno-Managerial professional in any industry.
MOTIVATION LETTER (2nd option: Electronics
Engineering)

I am currently at the cross roads of my career and higher education. Even though my career
path deviated from the electronics field, I have always remained an engineer at heart and have been
constantly trying to keep myself updated with the latest developments in this field. On one side is
where my heart is, which is in the Electronic sector and on the other side is the interesting domain
of Management education, which is the need of the hour for my career. Of course I cannot do both
together and I took a decision in my career interest to opt for Management Engineering as my first
preference while applying for Masters at Politecnico Di Milano. I had given this as the first
preference since I believe that the area of Energy and Environment Management is a vital area
which holds immense possibilities for future of mankind. Just in case life does not go as planned
for me, I would still be happy if I can gain higher education in my pet area of Electronics
Engineering, hence my second option naturally is in this field at Politecnico Di Milano.
I believe that, to be an engineer; one must have a diverse span of knowledge across various
domains. Gone are the days where one can categorise any area of Engineering as Mechanical,
Electrical, Electronics. Areas like Robotics, Mechatronics, Biomedical etc. are the outcome of
merger of various engineering fields in terms of practical application. In fact, these form the bulk
of employment and product research today in the engineering world, and their importance is much
more than the pure domain of any traditional engineering. This merger of different domains has
acquired such a proportion that one cannot differentiate where one starts or other ends.
One such inter-disciplinary field that caught my interest was Bio medicals that incorporated
extensive use of embedded systems and sensors for numerous recent breakthroughs in prosthetics,
regenerative medicine and robotic surgery. As I was going through the course structure for
Electronics engineering at Politecnico Di Milano, I felt that subjects such as Biochip, Biomedical
Instrumentation, MEMS and Micro sensors would aid me in understanding how electronics and
biology can be interfaced. If I get into Electronics Engineering I am sure to explore deeply into
these field of study and research and would definitely then be interested in a doctoral program in
any of the emerging bio medical instrumentation field at a later stage. I strongly believe that this
endeavour would greatly enhance my knowledge base and help contribute to the fast-paced
development that this domain promises.
I would consider it a privilege to study at Politecnico di Milano. I am positive that even if
I get the second option of a Masters in Electronics Engineering from this University, it would add
immense value to both my professional and personal development. I sincerely hope that I would
be provided with this opportunity to realize my career dream at Politecnico Di Milano.
