INTRODUCTORY MESSAGE
Now, more than ever, the academic community faces new challenges brought about by the health
crisis. With this recognition, the Department of Education (DepEd), through its Basic Education Learning
Continuity Plan (BE-LCP) identified different learning delivery modalities to ensure learning even without face-
to-face instruction in the classroom. One such modality is the Modular Distance Learning (MDL), where self-
learning modules or SLMs are to be used as primary learning resources.
Valuing this need and to fortify opportunities, Pres. Quirino Treasured Child School, Inc. gives life to
Enhanced Learning Module (ELM). This is our response to the call for quality instructional resources in
varying learning delivery modalities. It features to the non-negotiable attributes of self-learning modules,
namely interactive, self-implementing, self-instructional, and compact. Our ELMs are also complaint to the
learning timeframe recommended in the DepEd Order No. 1, s. 2021.
Moreover, the ELMs are developed based on the K to 12 curriculum guides (2016). They are also
enhanced with resources in digital forms and additional contents that further engage, support, and challenge
the learners. The learning examples and opportunities within the ELMs address the six facets of the Filipino
whole learner: healthy, safe, engaged, supported, challenged and value-oriented.
After completing the discussions, activities, and exercises in the ELMs, it is hoped that the learners
become more creative and critical thinkers, life and career-ready, healthy and holistically developed. An
integral part of our aspiration is that they become lifelong learners while the PQTCS stays true to its mission in
creating quality learning solutions.
The elements of the ELMs are consistent with those stated in the DepEd Self-Learning Modules
Framework. These are as follows:
1. Introduction – Each ELMs starts with an overview of the topic or content to be covered in the module.
2. Pre-Test – This provides test items that check the learner’s prior knowledge of the lessons.
3. Target – This presents the learning objectives that are based on the K-12 learning competencies and standards.
4. Optimize – This allows the learners to review and revisit previously learned concepts.
5. Capture – This provides the learner with activities that jumpstart the discussion.
6. Navigate – This provides clear and concise discussion of the content to sufficiently develop the intended learning
competencies.
7. Enrich – Learner’s understanding of the concepts and skills are reinforced through guided and independent activities/
assessments.
8. Focus – This allows the learner to summarize and synthesize key ideas presented in the lessons.
9. Apply – This engages the learner in tasks that will enable him\her to transfer the knowledge and skills learned to real
life situations, issues and problems.
10. Post-Test – This end-of-module assessment evaluates the learner’s level of mastery in achieving the learning targets.
For the learner, the following are some reminders in using this ELM:
1. Use the module with care.
2. Read the instruction carefully before doing each task.
3. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks.
4. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.
If you encounter any difficulty in answering the tasks in this ELM, do not hesitate to consult your
teacher. Always bear in mind that you are not alone.
We hope that through this ELM, you will experience meaningful learning and gain deep understanding
of the relevant competencies. You can do it!

JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL ENHANCED LEARNING MODULE |HEALTH 7
Health is a state of complete physical, mental or intellectual, emotional, social, moral-spiritual and
environmental well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity (WHO, 1948).
Health Dimensions
1. Physical health
It means how well your body
functions. It is a state of well- being
when all internal and external body
parts, organs, tissues and cells can
function properly as they are
supposed to function. It includes
being physically fit, eating
nutritiously, and getting adequate
rest and sleep.
2. Mental health means being a lifelong learner
by continuously wanting to learn new things and improve
one’s skills. A mentally healthy person is open to new
ideas and experiences that can improve life, family, and
environment. He/she is aware of his or her own abilities,
can cope normal stresses in life, able to work regularly
and productively, and is also able to contribute for the
improvement of community.
3. Social health refers to how well
you get along with other people,
how other people react and how
you interact with social
institutions. It involves your
ability to form satisfying
interpersonal relationships with
others. I also relates to your
ability to adapt comfortably to
different social situations and
act appropriately in a variety of
situations. Each of these
relationships should include
strong communication skills,
empathy for others and a sense of accountability.
4. Emotional health involves
understanding and liking yourself as well
as accepting and learning from your
mistakes. It refers to how well you meet
the demands of daily life and how you
adjust to new situations. It also means
expressing your happiness, love, joy and
hope as well as your sadness, anger,
stress and fear in healthful productive
ways
JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL ENHANCED LEARNING MODULE |HEALTH 7
5. Moral-spiritual health means being at
peace and in harmony with yourself, others
and a higher power. It refers to your
religion, principles, personal beliefs, values
and faith. It involves the quality of personal
relationships or a love of nature. It involves
a sense that life has meaning and purpose
and that you are in harmony with your
purpose in life.
6. Environmental Health means the
understanding of the effect to ourselves of the
air, the water and the land that surrounds us.
To recognize the impact of environmental and
human-made hazards and the ability to find
ways on how to protect ourselves and the
ecological systems against these hazards is
important.
Overall good health and wellness are inter-dependent on six dimensions. Health dimensions
are like separate pieces that need to be fitted together to make meaning.
A healthy child is active at home and school. He/she is active to do the household routine
like cleaning the house and the backyard. He/she has time to join with her/his parents in prayers,
attending masses and worship activities. He/she is alert and participative in classroom activities.
He/she enjoys being her/his friends, classmates, and other children in the school. He/she also
practicing and actively attending the environmental activities in their place like tree planting and
waste segregation.
Being healthy is much more than not being sick. Your health is made upof physical, mental,
social, spiritual-moral and environmental resources that allow you to live a satisfying and
productive life. Optimal health indicates a high level of functioning and is often characterized by
vitality, a zest for life and a sense of harmony with nature and humanity.
7 habits for a healthy life:
1. Exercise. Regular exercise is probably the closest we can get to a fountain of youth.
2. Always eat breakfast. Breakfast is often called the most important meal of the day and for good
reason. As the name suggests, breakfast breaks the overnight fasting period. It replenishes your
supply of glucose to boost your energy levels and alertness, while also providing other essential
nutrients required for good health.
3. Practice healthy eating throughout the day.
Here are some ways to make healthy changes in your eating habits:
a. Keep more fruits, low-fat dairy products (low-fat milk and low-fat yogurt),vegetables, and
whole-grain foods at home and at work. ...
b. Try to eat a family meal every day at the kitchen or dining table. ..
c. Buy a healthy recipe book, and cook for yourself.
4. Stay hydrated.
Here are some tips that can help:
a. Keep a bottle of water with you during the day.
b. If you don’t like the taste of plain water, try adding a slice of lemon or limeto your drink.
c. Drink water before, during and after a workout.
d. When you’re feeling hungry, drink water.
5. Don’t’ neglect dental hygiene. Dental hygiene refers to the practice of keeping the mouth,
teeth, and gums clean and healthy to prevent disease. Dental hygiene and oral health are often
taken for granted but are essential parts of our everyday lives.
JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL ENHANCED LEARNING MODULE |HEALTH 7
6. Get enough sleep. Sleep is vital to your well-being. It is as important as the air you breathe,
water you drink and the food you eat. Teens need about 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night to
function best.
7. Challenge yourself. We all get into ruts, doing the same things day after day, but to keep both
body and mind agile, get into the habit of taking on challenges. And don’t feel embarrassed
about not being an expert.
What are the benefits of good habits?
Health habits help combat diseases. It also help prevent certain health conditions, such as heart
disease, stroke, and high blood pressure. If you take careof yourself, you can keep your cholesterol and
blood pressure with in a safe range. This keeps your blood flowing smoothly, decreasing your risk of
cardiovascular diseases.

Today, three types of definition of health seem to be possible and are used. The first is that
health is the absence of any disease or impairment.
The second is that health is a state that allows the individual to adequately cope with all
demandsof daily life (implying also the absence of disease and impairment).
The third definition states that health is a state of balance, an equilibrium that an individual has
established within himself and between himself and his social and physical environment.
Let us try to answer the following questions in order to have a clear understanding about good
health.
1. What are the benefits of good health?
2. What habits will improve your life?
3. Why is it important to practice healthy habits?
4. Is it your responsibility to use health information wisely to guide your dayto day activities?

A developmental psychologist Erik Erikson in his theory on social development of human beings
describes eight stages through which a healthy developing human should pass from infancy to late
adulthood.
The first stage is infancy which starts at birth to one year of age. An infant is dependent and
establishing trust to the one who takes care of him but if there is no fulfillment it will lead into feeling of
mistrust.
The second stage of development takes place during early childhood and is focusing on
developing a greater sense of personal control. He/she performs basic actions and simple decisions that
make him/her secure and confident, while those who do not are left with a sense of inadequacy and
self-doubt.
JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL ENHANCED LEARNING MODULE |HEALTH 7
The preschool children need to begin asserting control and power over the environment. In
success stage, it leads to a sense of purpose, the failure results in a sense of guilt.
The school age develops a sense of pride in their accomplishments and abilities, competence
and beliefs in their skills. Those who receive little or no encouragement from others will doubt their
abilities to be successful.
During adolescence, children explore and develop a sense of self. Those who remain unsure of
their beliefs and desires will feel insecure and confused aboutthemselves and the future.
Young Adult stage is in the state of exploring personal relationships, develops closeness and
committed relationships with other people. Those who remain unsure of their beliefs and desires will
feel insecure and confused about themselves and the future.
Young adult stage is in the state of exploring personal relationships, develops closeness and
committed relationships with other people. Those who are successful at this stage will form relationships
that are committed and secure. Those with a poor sense of self tend to have less committed
relationships and are more likely to suffer emotional isolation, loneliness, and depression.
Adulthood stage focuses on career and family. They feel that they are contributing to the world
by being active in their home and community; failure to attain this will lead to a feeling of being
unproductive and uninvolved to thecommunity.
The old age is focused on reflecting back on life if with few regrets or a general feeling of
satisfaction.
You may be experiencing significant changes in yourself because you are now in another stage
of life - adolescence. Adolescence starts with puberty. Puberty is the time in life when a person becomes
sexually mature. It is a physical change that usually happens between ages 10 and 14 for girls and ages
12 and 16 for boys.
Puberty starts when a part of the brain called hypothalamus which begins releasing a hormone
called gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH). GnRH then signals the pituitary gland to release two
more hormones c-luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)-to start sexual
development.
What are the signs of puberty?
Puberty affects boys and girls differently.
In females:
The first sign of puberty is usually breasts development.
Other signs are the growth of hair in the pubic area and armpit, and [Link] (or a period)
usually happens last.
In males:
Puberty usually begins with the testicles and penis getting [Link] hair grows in the
pubic area and armpits.
Muscles grow, the voice deepens, acne and facial hair develop as pubertycontinues.
Both boys and girls usually have a growth spurt (a rapid increase in height) that lasts for about 2
or years along with the signs listed above. This brings them closer to their adult height which they reach
after puberty.
Does anyone go through puberty the same way?
Puberty can have different patterns, so everyone may not go through puberty in the same way.
For example: Some children may begin puberty earlier than normal, a condition called precocious
puberty. If signs of puberty occur early (beforeage 7 or 8 for girls and before age 9 for boys), parents and
care givers should talk to their child’s health-care provider to see if treatment is needed.
Other children may have delayed puberty, meaning the process begins later than normal.
Sometimes there is a reason for puberty starting late: for example, many young girls who are gymnasts
start puberty later than those who are not gymnasts. But in many cases, there is no known reason for
the delay.

The reproductive organs of both boys and girls grow and develop
Primary sex characteristics refer to changes directly related to sexual organs such as uterus,
vagina, penis, and testes.
Secondary sex characteristics are changes not directly related to sexual reproduction. Some
of the most significant parts of pubertal development involve distinctive physiological changes in a
person’s height, weight, body composition, circulatory and respiratory systems which are largely
influenced by hormonal activity.
Secondary sex characteristics develop such as a deeper voice in boys; usually complete
puberty by ages 16 to 17, and attain reproductive maturity about four years. First to grow are the
extremities (head, hands and feet), followed by the arms and legs, then the torso and shoulders. The
non-uniform growth is one reasonwhy an adolescent body may seem out of proportion.

As an adolescent, you should always remember that you are also responsible for your own health.
Monitor your body for changes that may need medical check-up. This is often referred to as part of
self-care.
For girls, it is recommended to check your breasts for possible masses or lumps the
moment you start menstruating. You should do this monthly, specifically one week after the onset of
menstruation. You can do this while taking a shower or facing the mirror.
