Seismic Vulnerability of Armenian Buildings

The document discusses the vulnerability of buildings and structures in Armenia, particularly in light of the high seismic risk demonstrated by the Spitak 1988 Earthquake. It highlights the need for assessing the vulnerability of essential facilities, including schools, and reviews modern seismic protection methods implemented in Armenia since the earthquake. The paper emphasizes the importance of improving seismic resistance in the region due to its significant seismic hazard.

Buildings and Structures Vulnerability and

Application of Modern Seismic Protection Systems

A. Antonyan, Z. Khlghatyan & V. Arzumanyan

Armenian National Survey for seismic Protection

Spitak 1988 Earthquake has shown that seismic hazard in Armenia is considerably higher
than the seismic resistance of buildings and structures and that its entire territory is practically
located in the zone of high seismic risk. In this condition estimation of the vulnerability of
buildings and structures becomes especially actual for Armenia.
The paper presents the main types of essential facility buildings and their vulnerability
level, including the data concerning school buildings and structures, as well as the experience
in application of the modern methods for seismic protection in Armenia after Spitak
Earthquake.
