EXEMPLAR ASSIGNMENT
Using ‘The Ocean’ as a theme, design an outfit for yourself. This may be a
traditional outfit or one suitable for a fancy dress party. Make the outfit or one
item of clothing from the outfit, using suitable textiles. The completed item
must include two of the following processes:
(a) buttons and buttonholes
(b) a sleeve
(c) decorative feature that shows the use of appliqué.
A commercial pattern may be used. The item of clothing must be supported by a
design folder.
Written Component- Design Folder (25 marks)
As the number of marks for this is limited it is important to keep the written
aspect concise.
Analysis and Research
(5 points listed)
The five points listed are essential and each should be dealt with. The
distribution of marks will vary for each aspect, to take account of variations in
the Analysis and Research, depending on the requirements of the Assignment
Brief.

Exploration of theme
Choose an aspect of the Ocean Theme. Identify theme. A spider diagram can
be used here. Specify whether designing for a Contemporary or Novel
garment.
Suggestions for Themes
Each student will explore one only.
Contemporary themes Novel themes
Colours relating the seascape, Pirates:
Sand & sea colours, coral, seaweed, Baggy Trousers & Tops with pirate
rocks theme.
Patterned fabric with symbols Sailor:
relating to the sea: Tops with Sailor Collar / Trousers
Boats, sails, lifebelts, anchors, in white & navy
waves, shells combinations.
Outfit could be beach wear : Mermaids:
Hawaiian Shirts, Bermudas, Beach Outfit suitable for fancy dress
wrap
Fishermen’s wear including: ‘Aran’
or ‘Kinsale Smock’ (as part of the
outfit).

3. Identification and description of outfit
Complete two labelled sketches to support the description of the outfit, a
sketch of (i) the front view and (ii) back view of the proposed outfit. Include
sketch of decorative feature if this is one of the chosen processes. Templates
may be used for the sketches.
If the outfit consists of more than one garment indicate which garment you
intend making. Identify the principal design features of the outfit e.g.
proportion, balance.
4. Justification of outfit/garment to be constructed
Here the student will give reasons for choice based on the suitability of the
chosen garment for the Assignment Brief and may avert to the essential
/desirable requirements and constraints.
5. Outline proposed course of action for making of garment
This will involve a summary schedule for the key stages of the proposed course
of action planned e.g.
Stage 1: Sourcing materials, measuring etc.
Stage 2: Layout, cutting out
Stage 3: Assembling to 1st fit, alterations
Stage 4: Main machining
Stage 5: etc.
A maximum of 6 key stages should be sufficient.

Implementation
Here the student will give a summary of the implementation of the key stages in
the order undertaken. Summary must include reference to the mandatory
processes. Identify mandatory process selected.
(The purpose of this is to ensure that the students do not lose touch with the
requirements of the Assignment Brief).
Evaluation
Evaluation of the completed garment, e.g. design features, fit and finish
obtained etc.
Difficulties encountered, if any, and how these were addressed e.g.
- Proposed modifications,
- Difficulties sourcing suitable fabric,
- Handling the chosen fabric,
- Carrying out the mandatory processes,
- Fitting etc.
Evaluation of the completed assignment in relation to the requirements of the
Assignment Brief.
