TARGET OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, I can;

1. identify the different modals


in sentences;
2. give the correct modal in each
sentence according to its use;
and
3. express my ideas in a given
statement using modals.
STUDY THE FOLLOWING SENTENCES

 Modal is an auxiliary verb
(such as can, must, might,
should) that is usually used
with a verb of predication and
expresses a modal modification.
TAKE NOTE OF THE FOLLOWING
MODALS AND THEIR USES;

 Can as a modal often used to


ask for and give permission. It
means something is allowed
and can be done.
Can’t tells us that something is
against the rules.

Mustn’t is usually used when


the obligation comes from the
person who is speaking.

Bothcan’t and mustn’t are


modals used to show that
something is prohibited.
Must and have to are modals
that primarily express a firm
obligation or necessity.

Should and ought to are


modals that express a
recommendation or moral
obligation.
Shall is used to express
suggestions, offering help or to
indicate promise in the future .

Will is used to express


intention, prediction, semi-
formal request, willingness and
a promise or a threat.
