Process

Step 5: Making an Impressionist Painting

Directions: Now that you have a better idea of impressionism and


impressionistic painters, it’s time to create one of your own. Follow
the steps below.

1. Find a photo that you would like to use for this project by
looking online using Google images or another photo website
that is approved for school viewing. (Images that work best for
this project are simple and have everyday objects, landscapes,
simple designs or animals)

2. Keeping examples of Impressionism paintings in mind look at


your picture. As best as you can, draw the basic features of
your picture lightly in pencil onto a large white 18X24 piece of
art paper.
Supplies you will need: paint, paintbrushes, half filled of
water, large white paper

3. Impressionist painters:
a. used dots and dabs to paint pictures
b. didn’t use the color black
c. avoided using lines whenever possible.
***Keep in mind the techniques that you learned about in
previous activities.***

4. It is time to paint your picture. Instead of painting your


picture with lines, remember to use your paintbrush to make
dots, dabs and swirls on the page.

5. Look at examples of paintings from previous activities to try


and capture the feeling of impressionism in your own way.

6. If you paint a part of your picture that you would like to re-do,
keep working on the rest of the piece, allow it to dry, and
simply paint over the place you would like to fix after it has
dried.
7. Input from other classmates is essential to the process of
making art. At some point in your painting, consult a
classmate. Ask them if they get the feeling of impressionism
from your painting. It is important to evaluate your own
progress to get an idea of what you did well as well as what
could use some work.

8. Remember to enjoy the process along the way! You will be


assessed on the overall success of the finished process,
following of directions, and effort.

in for grading when complete.***
