Importance of History in Filipino Culture

The reaction paper emphasizes the importance of understanding one's history and culture, likening it to a tree without roots, which leads to ignorance and repetition of past mistakes. It argues that knowledge of history is essential for personal and societal development, particularly for Filipinos to honor their ancestors' sacrifices. Additionally, it discusses the idea that history is often written by victors, but acknowledges that perspectives from the defeated can also shape historical narratives.

“A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree
without roots”
-Marcus Garvey

Marcus Garvey reminds us if people don’t have knowledge and were not to know their cultural heritage,
it would be a shame of the endeavor of their ancestor. Similar to the tree that described the effort that
was planted by our ancestors. The knowledge about our past is useful to complete our knowledge of the
world we live in. On the other hand, if we do not appreciate history it is forced to repeat itself.

For those who are ignorant of the past, one is bound to repeat past mistakes. It may have been good,
but it may also have been unworthy and repeating it only makes things unfortunate. In our everyday life
we can see how past knowledge helps to enhance the succeeding outcome. If people don’t know
history, then they don’t know anything. Just like those trees without roots dealing with lack of
education, depression and hopelessness. Therefore, if we embrace our history, origin and our culture
self-knowledge ensures better health, development, and well-being. Our real molding of the world
today is almost completely dependent on the fact that we learned from our history. So without
knowledge of our history we are nothing more than a pre-historic person. As we reflected on the history
we learned the day before and how it relates to the ways in which culture is developed, practiced and
preserved from generation to generation.

Being a Filipino we must preserved and embrace our culture because it served us foundation in every
aspect of our life. Our great men who sacrifice their lives for the sake of our mother land will not turn
into waste. However, I believe it is necessary to know and study our past because knowledge of the past
helps improve the quality of future output and satisfy our human thirst for knowledge.

History is almost always written by the victors and conquerors and gives their view or at
any rate. The victor’s version is given prominence and holds the field.

In my own perspective history is not always written by the victors whether the loser can or cannot
contribute to the discussion or account of what happened, there is no way of determining if such
conditions are propaganda or honest. It can be suggested that history is not found in facts, rather it’s the
victor’s perception. The example of this is how people manipulate history. Consider the example of
People Power Revolution whereas millions of Filipinos gathered along EDSA to end the dictatorship of
President Ferdinand Marcos. It would have been differently viewed if the People Power Revolution was
not happened and the President that time continuous in his term. On the other hand, victors can force
their history down to the people and it can comes from the fact that it also manage its national media
which dictates what is written and the way it is written in print or it is written by the people who write
history and we called it the victors. However, it is not always and not mandatory and some of our history
(world) was written by the people who lost.
