Project Proposal 2

Title: Hearing Aid Systems for Deaf People using MATLAB

Objectives:

 To be able to create a program that simulated a digital hearing aid.

 To create a system that filters noise and shapes frequency and compresses amplitude.
 To be able to use MATLAB as a platform for creating the project.

Intended Learning Outcomes:

1. The students shall apply what they learned in digital signal processing while the project is
ongoing.

2. At the end of the project, the researchers shall achieve valuable information and experience
regarding the subject and in programming using noise, amplitude and frequency processing.

3. The researchers shall also be able to enhance teamwork and problem-solving skills while
doing the project.

Discussion:

Traditional analog hearing aids are similar to a simple radio. They can be tuned and adjusted for
volume, bass and treble. But hearing loss is not just a technical loss of volume. Rather, hearing
deficiency can increase sensitivity and reduce tolerance to certain sounds while diminishing sensitivity to
others. For instance, digital technology can tell the difference between speech and background noise,
allowing one in while filtering out the other. Approximately 10% of the world’s population suffers from
some type of hearing loss, yet only a small percentage of this statistic use a hearing aid. The stigma
associated with wearing a hearing aid, customer dissatisfaction with hearing aid performance, and the
cost associated with a high-performance solution are all causes of low market penetration.
Using digital signal processing, digital hearing aid now offers what the analog hearing aid cannot
offer. It proposes the possibility of performing signal-to noise enhancement, flexible gain-processing,
digital feedback reduction, etc.

In this paper, the simulation of basic digital hearing aid was developed using MATLAB
programming language. The implementation of this configurable digital hearing aid (DHA) system
includes the noise reduction filter, frequency shaper function, and amplitude compression function. This
digital hearing aid system is design to adapt for mild and moderate hearing loss patient since different
gain can be set to map different levels of hearing loss.

Common questions

The digital hearing aid system is expected to include capabilities such as noise reduction filtration, frequency shaping, and amplitude compression. It is designed to adapt to mild and moderate hearing loss with configurable gain settings to accommodate different levels of hearing deficiencies .

Students aim to apply their knowledge in digital signal processing during the project. They also seek to gain experience and valuable information regarding noise, amplitude, and frequency processing. Additionally, they intend to enhance their teamwork and problem-solving skills .

Low market penetration of hearing aids can be attributed to the stigma associated with wearing them, customer dissatisfaction with performance, and the high cost of high-performance solutions .

The primary objectives of the project are to create a program that simulates a digital hearing aid, develop a system that filters noise, shapes frequency, and compresses amplitude, and to use MATLAB as a platform for creating the project .

Using MATLAB as a platform influences development by providing a robust environment for simulating complex digital signal processing tasks, such as noise reduction, frequency shaping, and amplitude compression, necessary for digital hearing aids. MATLAB's built-in functions and ease of integration facilitate prototyping and testing of various processing algorithms .

Digital technology in hearing aids can differentiate between speech and background noise, allowing it to selectively filter sounds, which traditional analog hearing aids cannot do. Analog aids are similar to radios, adjusting volume, bass, and treble, while digital aids offer signal-to-noise enhancement, flexible gain-processing, and digital feedback reduction .

Amplitude compression in the digital hearing aid system helps in managing the dynamic range of sound inputs. It reduces the intensity of louder sounds while amplifying softer ones, ensuring all sounds are brought within a comfortable listening range for the user, particularly beneficial for those with hearing loss .

Teamwork and problem-solving are significant as they enable the participants to effectively address and overcome challenges encountered during the project. These skills help in coordinating tasks, integrating diverse ideas, and achieving the project's objectives efficiently while fostering a collaborative learning environment .

Digital hearing aids simulated in MATLAB have the potential to significantly improve user satisfaction compared to traditional hearing aids. This is due to their ability to perform complex processing tasks like noise differentiation, gain-processing, and feedback reduction, addressing many complaints users have with analog aids regarding clarity and usability .

The digital hearing aid system aims to improve noise and frequency processing by implementing noise reduction filters and frequency shaping functions. This allows the system to better isolate desired sounds (e.g., speech) from background noise and tailor the frequency response to the user's specific hearing needs, therefore enhancing overall listening experience .
