Globalization: Threats and Benefits Explained

1. Globalization may threaten national sovereignty and identity by allowing increased movement of people across borders, including terrorists who could conduct attacks. However, globalization is also driven by sharing of local cultural products globally in a way that inspires others. 2. Globalization is inevitable as increased connectivity through history, like the Silk Road, has driven greater economic, political, social, and cultural interconnectedness globally. Forces of globalization are now deeply embedded and almost impossible to avoid in modern life. 3. Undeveloped countries may progress on their own without embracing globalization, but true progress would be difficult to ensure. Globalization affects all countries and while it can increase inequalities, embracing it may allow for greater economic growth

Sistual BSMT 2 TEM Assignment 1: Introduction to Globalization

1. Is Globalization a threat to a nation's sovereignty and Identity?

If by means I would to talk about a specific reason to why it is somehow a threat to a nation’s
sovereignty and identity, I would say terrorism. Because of globalization, the things about it is
that it allows people to go in and out of the country. One factor could be if terrorist was then able
to go in a country with the goal of having a terrorist attack or to kill one’s people in order to
control a nation, then yest it is a threat. Due to the possible control of sovereignty of a country.
Yet, if by means generally and if its about identity, then we all know that globalization is a man-
made product. People do their own products locally and with pride to share it across the world.
Therefore, I cannot say it is a threat, yet it could be given as a pressure of thought since it would
be up to us to take accountability or the responsibility for what positive or negative outcomes
that comes out of it. Since we are influencing other people in other countries, inspiring them with
our local ideas and work, this is a part of a globalization process that could either progress
evenly or not.

2. Is Globalization inevitable? Explain why.

Personally, Globalization for me is inevitable and might as well irreversible. It is a process that is
certain to happen. Because if I were to be teleported back to the day where the Silk Road
Globalization occurred, it was certain to happen as it is. It was the main transportation route
connecting to the ancient China along with the Western Europe. With that road, international
trade was bound to happen, since its routes has a large network of strategically located trading
posts and even markets and thoroughfares that is designed to be a stream of transportation,
exchange and even distribution and storage of goods.
Mainly my point, because of the process having the increased movement of people with their
knowledge, goods or money, across different borders, the silk road was basically the root or an
example of how it led to become of what is today. It led to the increase of interconnectedness
among the world’s population either economically, politically, socially and even culturally.
Wherever we look in each direction, Globalization is there without a doubt. The shirts we wear,
the songs we sing, the new cuisines we ate, the new technologies and gadgets we use,
anything that is not locally made or is locally made throughout the global concept is already
globalization because global businesses and organizations was able to develop international
influences to start operating on a scale of being international. And perse we can also say it is
not inevitable, but that is already something contradicting or impossible in a sense because we
could clearly avoid using anything but what we are most likely using in our everyday life is
already connected with globalization. Unless you want to live in a forest by living alone starting
from scratch.

3. Can an undeveloped country progress without embracing the idea of

Globalization?
I can say that it could, but they could progress in their own way. However, with or without it, I
can say that there will always be problems of others who would think they are not capable.
Countries like Afghanistan, Uganda, Nepal, Mozambique, and many more, are third world
countries. These countries are said to be one of the least developed countries in the world. With
this, globalization has its negative effects towards these third world countries. It increased the
inequality in developing nations between the rich and poor, which the benefit makes it not
universal. This is because it makes the rich become richer, yet the poor even poorer.
So basically, even if they don’t embrace the idea of globalization, globalization itself is already
circulating around the world that could still affect the third world countries whether they like it or
not. They may progress with their own way but I cannot assure the real progress from it. For
instance, because of globalization, the cause of having the under development of their country
could either be from poverty, or they are either over populated, their climate or geography,
having poor education and even the lack of health care, inequality, and so on. So whether they
embrace it or not, since globalization is inevitable, numerous of their problems like
unemployment, or lack of industrialization could take place or have took place.
Therefore, I can say that they either progress or not with or without embracing it because as I
said, globalization is still inevitable as it is. They can either progress through their own way, but
they can progress better with globalization through economic and trades and more.

4. Enumerate and explain 3 benefits of Globalization.

With Globalization, we are able to access to new cultures. As I have said earlier, anything that is
not locally made and is influenced to the nation was already part of globalization and because of
the new access to foreign culture, we are able to develop our knowledge and ideas by the
influence of their new cuisines, movies, music, their art and a lot more. We are able to become
inspired and having the likeness of using their products and intertwine it with our own local ideas
to improve our style and daily life routines.
Secondly, one of the important benefits of globalization is of course having the benefit of lower
costs for products. Since most national companies could now find ways that are lower in cost for
them to produce their products, this led to an increase of competition globally. This somehow
made the prices decrease and allows consumers globally to have a large variety of choices to
choose from in order to live better on having to spend less.
Last but not the least, the spread of technology and innovation. Most of us especially in this
pandemic, online platforms are bound to be the new normal and that involves new technology,
new form of communication, use of gadgets and even the need to expand further innovation.
Through globalization, technology around the world from different countries exchanges with new
ideas which advances to travel quickly. Due to the fast transfers and exchange of information,
new knowledge is acquired which could help spread to country-to-country to be inspired and
learn different innovative ideas to develop and improve our needs.

5. Enumerate and explain 3 negative effects of globalization to developing countries.

There could also be downsides of globalization as it is not all about it is beneficial. One of the
negative impacts of globalization is the effect to community of people who had been dependent
on their jobs that are basically outsourced anywhere. At this point, they suffer the most since the
workers in other developing countries are also having the must to compete with lower-cost
market for a job. Not only that, there are also workers that are unable or do not have the power
to defend themselves against the threat and sovereignty of a corporation that likely offer them
the alternative in choosing between having to be paid in a lower salary or losing a job to a
supplier who is in a less expensive labor market.
Another negative impact is the income disparity. Inequality in developing countries is not
surprising at this point since most of the corporation or high standard businesses shows
inequality between the more educated and less-educated individuals of a society. This
effectively means that the more educated or skilled a person could be, the better opportunity to
have larger wages. But as for unskilled workers, they could be affected by declining wages
which is under constant pressure from globalization itself.
Lastly, Terrorism. This is somehow one of the dangers and yet a significant problem in most
developed countries. Due to globalization, it led to have a worldwide integration whereas people
can now travel more at different destinations around the world. Some could live or study abroad,
they can also put up a business, visit friends, relatives and family, some even have to work.
Because of this idea, people from around the world could access or go through different
countries and some of them might not be at your favor. From the news we saw, there are a lot
of terrorists who comes to a foreign country with a working or tourist visa having a goal that is to
perform a terrorist attack. But with his dishonestly and probably with his convincing details, he
was able to pass through integration. Some of the terrorist also recruits young individuals in
order to fool them to believe them. That is clearly why that most people in a society, are afraid,
having the difficulty to trust other people anywhere.
