Task Brief
In groups of 3, develop and present a video
documentary that communicates the
design, development, testing and
evaluating of your group's bottle rockets.
You may use either iMovie, PowerPoint or
other movie editing software to develop
your video documentary.

Outcomes
5.1.1 develops ideas and explores solutions to technological and engineering based problems

5.2.2 applies and transfers acquired scientific and mechanical knowledge to subsequent learning experiences in a variety of contexts

5.3.1 applies knowledge and understanding of engineering principles and processes

5.3.2 identifies and uses a range of technologies in the development of solutions to engineering problems

5.4.1 uses mathematical, scientific and graphical methods related to technology and engineering

5.5.1 Applies a range of communication techniques in the presentation of research and design solutions

5.5.2 critically evaluates innovative, enterprising and creative solutions

5.6.1 selects and uses appropriate problem-solving techniques in a range of STEM contexts
5.6.2 will work individually or in teams to solve problems in STEM contexts
Task Requirements

Your video must include the following:

1. an overview of the engineering design process and how it has been applied to the
design and develop your bottle rocket.
2. Outline of the scientific principles that are critical to the success of your bottle rocket
design and an explanation of how these have been applied to the design of your
bottle rockets:
- Forces and motion
- Inertia, stability and the design considerations (CM & CP, fill ratio, drag, fin
design, nose cone design)
3. The development of your ideas including:
- graphic techniques (sketching, scaled drawing, 3D designs)
- the selection of appropriate materials and the use of different technologies
used to develop your bottle rocket e.g. 3D printing, balsa, foam board, etc.
4. The building process you undertook to produce your final bottle rocket (images and
discussion of how you built your rocket.)
5. Document your testing including:
video of the behaviour of your rocket during the test
results of testing (facts)
testing data
conclusion (what did you find out from testing your rockets?)
comment on the overall success and/or failure
changes modifications required
plan for moving forward
6. Final Evaluation of the success of your bottle rocket design:
What went well?
What didn't go well?
What would you change if you were given the opportunity?
