TEST FOR DELETERIOUS MATERIAL OF COARSE

AGGREGATE / FINE AGGREGATE


PURPOSE : To Determine Percentage of different harmful material (i.e- coal, lignite, clay, soft
ragment) present in aggregates.

IS CODE : IS: 2386 (PART III) 1963

APPARATUS :
 The apparatus shall consist of following :-
 Balance, container, IS sieve-4.75 and 40mm.

PROCEDURE :
 The sample of coarse aggregate shall be taken as per specified limit as below-

Sr. Number IS SIEVE SPECIFIED WEIGHT (gms)


1 4.75 – 10mm 1000
2 10 - 20mm 2000
3 20 – 10mm 3000
4 Over the 40mm 5000

 The sample taken in a tray and finer particle of clay lumps will be broken by fingers. And sieve through
following sieve-

SIEVE SIZE COARSE AGGREGATE FINE AGGREGATE


2.36mm Over the 4.75 – 10mm
4.75mm 10 – 20mm
4.75mm 40mm
850 µ Retained on 1.18mm sieve

 Weight of sample to be taken as W1


 Weight of sample after removal of clay lumps-W2

CALCULATIONS :
 Percentage of clay lumps
L = W1 – W2 / W1 X 100

LIMITS : Coarse aggregates - 1%

Fine aggregates - 1%

FREQUENCY :

One test per 100 Cum
