What you’ll need: 
Yarn: You can use any type of yarn, but if you want your snake to look like my red one, then use Mandala Yarn 
in Wizard 
Hook: I used a D hook, which is 3-3.125mm 
Wire: 15 gauge aluminum wire, or a thinner wire doubled over 
Eyes: 6 - 8 mm safety eyes or small black beads 
Tapestry needle 
 

Vocabulary: 
ch: chain 
inc: Increase, 2sc in the same st 
st: stitch 
sc: single crochet 
Rnd/rnd: round  
FO: Fasten Off 
dec:​ Decrease. If you want your dec to be a bit more invisible, then you can replace the dec with an invdec 
(invisible decrease) 
FL: Front Loop 
BLO: Back Loop Only 
YO: Yarn Over 
Sk: Skip 
mr: Magic Ring (If you don’t know how to do a magic ring, you can replace it with ch2 and sc in 2nd ch from 
hook)  
 
 

How to . . .  
dec: Put your hook in the next st, YO and pull loop through, repeat this one more time, there should be 3 
loops on your hook, pull through all of them 
invdec: Put your hook in the FL of the next st, B
​ ut do ​NOT​ pull up a loop,​ work your way into the FL of the 
next st, YO and pull through both FL, YO and pull through both loops left on hook..  
 

 
Tail-Body 

The body is worked in rounds, place a stitch marker after the end of Rnd 1, and move it up after every Rnd to 

keep track of where the round ends. Stuff firmly every few rnds of the body. If you want your snake to be 

posable, insert wire after 50 or so rounds.  

Rnd 1: sc 4 in mr ​~4

Rnd 2-7: (6 rnds) sc in each st around ​~​4 

Rnd 8: 2 sc in first st, sc in each of the next 3 st ​~​5 

Rnd 9-13: (5 rnds) sc in each st around ~

Rnd 14: 2 sc in next st, sc in each of the next 4 st ​~​6 

Rnd 15-18: (4 rnds) sc in each st around ​~​6 

Rnd 19: 2 sc in next st, sc in each of the next 2 st, 2 sc in next st, sc in each of the next 2 st ​~8

FO, leaving a tail long enough to tuck in 

Head 

The head is worked in rounds, place a stitch marker after the end of Rnd 1, and move it up after every Rnd.  

Rnd 1: Ch 5, starting in the 2nd ch from hook, sc in each of the next 4 sts. Turn, and working on the opposite 

side of the original 5 ch, sc4, slst in the first sc of this rnd ​~​8 

Rnd 2: Sc in each st around ​~8

Rnd 3: *sc in each of the next 3 sts, inc, repeat from* one time ​~​10 

Rnd 4: Sc in each st around ~

​ ​10 

Rnd 5: Sc in the next st, *inc, repeat from* 2 times, sc in each of the next 7 sts ~

Rnd 6-8: (3 rnds) sc in each st ~

If you are using safety eyes, place them in between rnds 5 and 6, 5sts apart. 

Stuff the head firmly.

FO, leaving a tail long enough to sew the head onto the body. 

Sew the head onto the body using a tapestry needle and the yarn tail from this piece. 

Tail Ornamentation /Fin (Optianal) ​Body color yarn. The tail fin is worked in Rows. 

Row 1: Ch 13, turn, starting in the 2nd ch from hook, sc 12, turn ​~​12 

Row 2: Ch 1, sc 10, slst 2, turn ~

​ 1​ 2 

Row 3: Ch 1, skip the slsts, slst, sc9, turn ​~1​ 0 

Row 4: Ch 1, sc 6, ch 6, turn ~6sc, 6ch​=1​ 2 

Row 5: Starting in the 2nd ch from hook, sc 7 ch 5, turn ~

​ 7​ sc, 5ch​=1​ 2 

Row 6: Starting in the 2nd ch from hook, sc 11, turn ~

Row 7: Ch 1, sc 9, slst 2, turn ​~​11

FO leaving an 18in tail, so that you can sew it on firmly to the tail-body. Begin sewing it on by folding down 

the lower edge of the fin (see picture) 

One of my snake’s tail fins was a bit floppy, so I took about 4in of wire 

and fed it through the stitches on the outer edge.  

Horns, Make2 (Optional)  

(Sparkly) Golden Yarn, The horns are worked in rounds, place a stitch 

marker after rnd 1. Recommended: Go down at least one hook size or make sure your yarn is 

thinner, for more detailed horns. 

Rnd 1: Sc 4 in a mr~4 
Rnd 2: BLO: Sc in each st around​~​4 

Rnd 3: BLO: Sc 3, inc​~5​  

Rnd 4: BLO: Sc in each st around​~5​  

FO leaving an 8in tail. Sew them 1 rnd behind the eyes, or wherever looks best to you. 

*Spine (Optional) ​ ​The Spine is also worked in rows, using body colour.  

Yarn the same colour as the body. The spine is worked in rows.   

Row 1: Ch 9, turn, starting in the 2nd ch from hook sc 8, turn ~8 

Row2: Ch 2, sc in the 2nd ch from hook sc 2, *ch2, sc in the 2nd ch from hook, sc in the same st that you began 

your chs in, sc 2, repeat from* two times, but do not do the last two sts. 

FO, leaving a 12in tail for sewing to attach. Starting at the top of the neck, take your 

needle through one st of the Spine and one st of the Neck, do this all the way to the end of 

the spine. 

*NOTE: You can make the spine longer by adding chs at the beginning, then repeating 

the pattern in row 2 until you reach the end of the row.
