Crystal Structure Calculations and Analysis

This document contains 4 questions for a materials science assignment. Question 1 asks to (a) derive the ideal c/a ratio for HCP crystal structures and (b) calculate the unit cell volume for cobalt using given parameters. Question 2 asks to derive cation-anion ratios for different coordination numbers. Question 3 asks to calculate the theoretical density of NaCl using given atomic weights and ionic radii. Question 4 asks about necessary conditions for slip planes in FCC structures and to draw all slip systems.

Question 1 (3 marks)

(a) For the HCP crystal structure, show that the ideal c/a ratio is 1.633.
(b) Cobalt (Co) has an HCP crystal structure, an atomic radius of 0.1253 nm, and a c/a ratio
of 1.633. Compute the volume of the unit cell for Co.

Question 2 (3 marks)

Recall our discussion on coordination numbers and geometries for various R (rcation/ranion).
Derive the Cation-Anion ratio (R) for following cases:
a) Coordination number: 3
b) Coordination number: 4
c) Coordination number: 6
d) Coordination number: 8

Question 3 (2 marks)

Compute theoretical density of NaCl.

Atomic weight of Na = 22.99 g/mol; Atomic weight of Cl = 35.45 g/mol

Ionic radii of Na+ = 0.102 nm, that of Cl- = 0.181 nm

Question 4 (2 marks)

Consider FCC crystal structure. What is the necessary condition for a plane to be a slip
plane? How many slip systems exist for FCC? Please draw all the cases.
