MODULE 3:

OVERVIEW:
Intelligent behaviors, or habits of
mind, "are the characteristics of what
intelligent people do when they are confronted
with problems, the resolution to which are not
immediately apparent" (Costa & Kallick, 2000).
Students need to know how to approach and
deal with problems or situations that result in
"I don't know." This module will give them the
tools to work through the blank spots and
move on until they do figure out the problem.

MODULE SCHEDULE:
Synchronous Meeting: schedule per class (once a week)
Asynchronous Meeting: 3hrs. /week

Today something new is in the air. Companies have become more preoccupied with talent than
ever before. And even companies in more ordinary businesses have begun to think they cannot manage
and compete without a lot of deep smarts. What kind of behaviors actually produce intelligence? We
now know that the notion of innate intelligence is bonkers. That being the case, what are the behaviors
that produce intelligence? What behaviors are indicative of the efficient, effective problem solver? Just
what do human beings do when they behave intelligently?
Performance can be greatly influenced by one’s behavior. Behavior is defined as the manner in
which a person conducts himself/herself in various circumstances. When a person is behaving
intelligently, he/she is said to manifest 14 behaviors or dispositions (Costa, 2000).
Intelligent behavior is the capability of using one’s knowledge about the world to make decisions
in novel situations: people act intelligently if the use what they know to get what they want.

Intelligent behaviors, or habits of mind, "are the characteristics of what intelligent people do when they
are confronted with problems, the resolution to which are not immediately apparent"
Here are 14 intelligent behaviors indicative of an efficient and effective problem
solver, many of which were originally compiled by Arthur Costa in a paper entitled Teaching
for Intelligence.

1. Persistence: It means not

giving up when the answer to a
problem is not immediately
known.

2. Overcoming impulsiveness: It
involves planning, clarifying goals,
exploring alternative strategies and
considering consequences before
you begin.

3. Listening to others: Some

cognitive psychologists think that
the ability to listen to another
person and understand their point of
view is one of the highest forms of
intelligent behavior.

4. Flexibility in thinking: It is
when one considers other points
of view rather than running with
the first possibility.

5. Metacognition: It refers to the

awareness of how one is thinking
or the knowledge of what is going
on in one’s head.

6. Checking for accuracy and

precision: It is a behavior of not
letting speed surpass your desire
for craftsmanship.

7. Questioning and problem

posing: It means asking questions
and finding out problems for
yourself.

8. Applying past knowledge to

new situations: It refers to the act
of calling upon one’s store of
knowledge and experience as
sources of data, theories to
explain, or processes to solve each
new challenge.

9. Precision of language and

thought: A person with this
behavior uses more descriptive
terms to distinguish objects, and
provides criteria for value
judgments.

10. Using all the senses: The

senses of feeling, seeing, hearing, or
even tasting are utilized in order to
effectively solve problems.

11. Creativity: It means applying

ingenuity, originality and insight.
Creativity develops one’s capacity to
generate original, unique, clever or useful
products, solutions and techniques.

12. Living with a sense of

wonderment: Involved in this
behavior are inquisitiveness,
curiosity, and openness to beauty,
intricacy, complexity and simplicity.

13. Cooperation: taking

advantage of the thinking and
learning that can only come as a
result of social relationships.

14. Sense of humor: It refers to

being able to look at situations,
opportunities, problems, and
relationships with nonchalance
and fun.

Possessing many of these intelligent behaviors is an advantage in the corporate world.

Business firms look not only for knowledge and experience, but also for efficiency and effectiveness
the global war for talent is likely to intensify. Many firms and companies are already struggling to
find enough well-trained, and inventive professionals. Which of the fourteen qualities (14)
characterize your behaviors? Which do you need to start working on?

Howard Gardner is a psychologist and Professor

at Harvard University's Graduate School of Education. Based on his
study of many people from many different walks of life in everyday
circumstances and professions, Gardner developed the theory of
multiple intelligences such as: Visual-Spatial Intelligence, Linguistic-
Verbal Intelligence, Logical-Mathematical Intelligence, Bodily-
Kinesthetic Intelligence, Musical Intelligence, Interpersonal
Intelligence, Intrapersonal Intelligence and Naturalistic Intelligence.
Based on his study of many people from many different walks
of life in everyday circumstances and professions, Gardner developed
the theory of multiple intelligences. He performed interviews with and
brain research on hundreds of people, including stroke victims, prodigies, autistic individuals, and so-
called "idiot savants."
According to Gardner,
 All human beings possess all nine intelligences in varying amounts.
 Each person has a different intellectual composition.
 We can improve education by addressing the multiple intelligences of our students.

 These intelligences are located in different areas of the brain and can either work
independently or together.
 These intelligences may define the human species.

1. Visual-Spatial Intelligence (Picture Smart)

Strengths:
 Visual and spatial judgment
 People who are strong in visual-spatial intelligence are good at visualizing things.
 These individuals are often good with directions as well as maps, charts, videos, and pictures.

Characteristics:
 Enjoys reading and writing and charts
 Recognized patterns easily
 Enjoys drawing, painting, and visual arts
 Good at putting puzzles together
 Good at interpreting pictures, graphs,

Potential Career Choices :

 If you're strong in visual-spatial intelligence, good career choices for you are:
 Architect
 Artist
 Engineer

2. Linguistic-Verbal Intelligence (Word Smart)

Strengths:
 Words, language, and writing
 People who are strong in linguistic-verbal intelligence are able to use words well, both when
writing and speaking.
 These individuals are typically very good at writing stories, memorizing information, and
reading.

Characteristics:
 Good at remembering written and spoken information
 Enjoys reading and writing
 Good at debating or giving persuasive speeches
 Able to explain things well
 Often uses humor when telling stories

Potential Career Choices:

 Writer/journalist
 Lawyer
 Teacher

3. Logical-Mathematical Intelligent (Number/Logic Smart)

Strengths:
 Analyzing problems and mathematical operations
 People who are strong in logical-mathematical intelligence are good at reasoning, recognizing
patterns, and logically analyzing problems.
 These individuals tend to think conceptually about numbers, relationships, and patterns.

Characteristic
 Excellent problem solving skills
 Enjoys thinking about abstract ideas
 Likes conducting scientific experiments
 Good at solving complex computations

4. Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence (Body Smart)

Strengths:
 Physical movement, motor control
 Those who have high bodily - kinesthetic intelligence are said to be good at body movement,
performing actions, and physical control.
 People who are strong in this area tend to have excellent hand-eye coordination and
dexterity.

Characteristics:
 Good at dancing and sports
 Enjoys creating things with his or her hands
 Excellent physical coordination
 Tends to remember by doing, rather than hearing or seeing

Potential Career:
 Dancer
 Sculptor
 Builder
 Actor

5. Musical Intelligence (Music Smart)

Strengths:
 Rhythm and music
 People who have strong musical intelligence are good at thinking in patterns, rhythms, and
sounds.
 They have a strong appreciation for music and are often good at musical composition and
performance.

Characteristics:
 Enjoys singing and playing musical instruments
 Recognizes musical patterns and tones easily
 Good at remembering songs and melodies
 Rich understanding of musical structure, rhythm, and notes

Potential Career Choices:

 Musician
 Composer
 Singer
 Music teacher
 Conductor

6. Interpersonal Intelligence (People Smart)

Strengths:
 Understanding and relating to other people
 Those who have strong interpersonal intelligence are good at understanding and interacting
with other people.
 These individuals are skilled at assessing the emotions, motivations, desires, and intentions
of those around them.

7. Intrapersonal Intelligence (Self Smart)

Strengths:
 Introspection and self-reflection
 Individuals who are strong in intrapersonal intelligence are good at being aware of their own
emotional states, feelings, and motivations.
 They tend to enjoy self-reflection and analysis, including daydreaming, exploring
relationships with others, and assessing their personal strengths.

Characteristics:
 Good at analyzing his or her strengths and weaknesses
 Enjoys analyzing theories and ideas
 Clearly understands the basis for his or her own motivations and feelings
 Excellent self-awareness

 Philosopher
 Theorist
 Writer
 Scientist

8. Naturalistic Intelligence (Nature Smart)

Strengths:
 Finding patterns and relationships to nature
 Naturalistic is the most recent addition to Gardner’s theory and has been met with more
resistance than his original seven intelligences.
 According to Gardner, individuals who are high in this type of intelligence are more in tune
with nature and are often interested in nurturing, exploring the environment, and learning
about other species.
 These individuals are said to be highly aware of even subtle changes to their environments.

Characteristics:
 Interested in subjects such as botany, biology, and zoology
 Good at categorizing and cataloging information easily
 May enjoy camping, gardening, hiking, and exploring the outdoors
 Doesn’t enjoy learning unfamiliar topics that have no connection to nature

 Biologist
 Conservationist
 Gardener
 Farmer

Activity 2:
Directions: Identify, analyze, and explain what intelligent behavior is illustrated in the following

1. Intelligent behavior greatly helps the student in their study habit particularly the cooperation.
Cooperation will boost their social intelligence in dealing with fellow student especially when it comes
to group works and other school activities. Creativity always starts with imagination, Benjamin Bloom
identified what he called the taxonomy of the cognitive domain, and he ranked synthesis (creativity) as
one of the most difficult skills to master because a person has to use all the other cognitive skills in the
creative process. Metacognition will nurture self-awareness in the classroom, when the student act of
thinking how will help them to make greater sense of their life experiences and start in achieving their
goals. Among the intelligent behaviors mention above, what do you think will help you most in dealing
with your school works/activities?

2. Listening to the others is an important skill needed in virtually all situations; however, we seldom teach
students how to listen. Teaching this skill, like most others, involves modeling and practice. This skill can

3. Managing impulsivity is another much needed skill in today's society. Newspapers are full of incidents
reporting crimes and accidents that might not have happened had the criminals and victims managed
their impulsivity! Running a stop sign, shoplifting, and plagiarism are all examples of people not
managing their impulsivity. Examples from content area textbooks as well as fiction can be excellent
illustrations of this skill, or the lack of it. Identify and explain what kinds of intelligent behavior.

4. Persistence is an intelligent behavior that many students lack. You've probably already seen this
behavior in your classroom when a student doesn't turn in homework, stating, "I just didn't understand
it." You can model persistence in a number of ways. In mathematics, try a number of incorrect strategies
for solving a problem and, finally, choose the correct one. In science and other content areas share stories
of those who demonstrated persistence, including Thomas Edison and Jonas Salk, who tried numerous
times to solve a problem before they found "the answer. Identify what kind of intelligent behavior is
