LESSON
1 Structure and Function of Your Eyes
Look around you. What are the things you see? Now, slowly close your eyes. Try to
imagine the things that you saw when your eyes were open.
Our eyes are like a video camera. They capture a lot of information about the world around
us. When you look at an object, your eyes send its size, shape, color, movement, and other
information to your brain. Your brain then acts like a memory card where the information is
processed a recorded.
The sense of sight is the most complex among the five senses. As you read on, you will
understand how the eyes enable us to see.
Parts of the Eyes and their Function
External Parts of the Eye
Eyelids- When you blink, your eyelids close over your eyes. It protect the front
part of your eyes. They help the eye clean and moist.
Reflex- An automatic response to protect a part of the body.
Eyebrows and eyelashes- protect your eyes from sweat and dust. They also lessen the glare of
bright lights.
Lacrimal or tear glands- a part of the eye that produces tears.
Internal Parts of the Eye
Opthalmologists- Eye doctors who use special instruments to look at these inner parts. Let us
take a tour to the inner parts of the eye.
Eyeball- is as big as table tennis or Ping-Pong ball. It is fitted in a socket in your skull.
Sclera- white part of the eye and it is the outer coat that protects the eyeball. If you look closely
at the sclera, you will see tiny pink lines. These are the blood vessels that supply the sclera with
blood.
Cornea- the bulge in front of the colored part of your eye. You can hardly see cornea because it
is transparent, like a clear glass. It helps your eye to focus as light passes through it.
Pupil- is the opening at the center of the iris. The pupil allows light to enter the eye. The pupil
becomes smaller when there is bright light and bigger when there is dim light. What will
happens to the pupils of your eyes when you enter a movie house?
Iris- is the colored part of the eye that surrounds the pupil. It regulates the amount of the light
that enters the eye.
Lens- Light that enters the pupil hits the lens. The lens is a colorless part of the eye that lies at
the back of the iris. The lens inside your eyes actually change their shape but you do not notice
it.
Retina- it is at the back of your eye. It contains millions of cells that are sensitive to light and
color.
Rods and cones- special cells
Rods- tell us about the form or shape of an object. They allow us to see when it is dark.
Cones- tell us the color of an object.
Optic nerve- eyes communicate with the brain through the optic nerve. It is located at the back
of the eye. It is like a messenger that reports to the brain everything that you see. The brain then
interprets what you are seeing as a red flower, a big spotted dog, a white paper, or some other
objects.
Common Eye Ailments and First Aid Treatment
Have you experienced any eye problem? The most common eye problems among children are the
following.
Minor Eye Irritation
Sand, dust, dirt or some other foreign body may enter your eyes and cause discomfort or pain. Do
not rub your eyes when any of these happens. Instead clean your hands with soap and water, then wash
the affected eye with lukewarm water. If the feeling persists, ask your parents to accompany you to the
doctor immediately.
Sty
A sty is a tender, painful red swelling either at the base of an eyelash, under or inside the eyelid.
It is caused by bacteria. A common sign of a sty is a small, yellowish spot at the center of the swelling.
This spot develops as pus increases in the area.
Apply a warm compress or warm washcloth to the effected area for ten minutes, four to six
times a day. Warm compress can relieve the pain and help rupture of the sty. If a sty persists for several
days, a doctor may drain the infection.
Conjunctivitis
This is more commonly know as sore eyes or pink eyes. It is the swelling and reddening of the
membrane that covers the white part of the eyes and lining of the eyelids.
Do not rub your eyes if you have sore eyes. This will just irritate the eyes even more. Instead,
wash them with cold water to relieve the pain and itchiness. If they still hurt after washing, put a cool
cloth over your eyes and rest them for about 15 minutes. If your eyes are still sore, consult your doctor
for proper treatment.
Care for the Eyes
Can you imagine not being able to see things normally? Imagine not being able to see your parents
and friends, watch TV, or take a walk and see the beautiful things around you. People with certain eye
diseases are not able to fully enjoy these experiences. Taking care of your eyes is very important.
Protecting your eyes can help you avoid eye problems in the future.
Here are some ways of caring for your eyes:
1. Make sure there is sufficient light when you read.
2. Avoid very light. Use sunglasses to protect your eyes from glare.
3. When dirt gets into your eyes, blink often so that tears can wash away the dirt. If the dirt is not
removed by this method, dip your face in a basin of clean water and blink underwater until the dirt is
removed. Another way is to have someone slowly pour clean water from a dipper so that water would
run down the eyes. If none of these measures helps, consult a doctor.
4. Do not read lying down or when riding a vehicle.
5. Keep pointed objects away from your eyes.
6. Rest your eyes when they are tired.
7. Eat food rich in Vitamin A. Yellow vegetables such as carrots, and fruit like squash and papaya are
good for your eyes.

LESSON Structure and Functions of Your Ears
2
Your Ears as Organs for Hearing
Look at your ears. Are they big or small?
Parts of the Ears
Pinna or auricle- part of your ears that hangs on each side of your head.
The pinna is where girls and boys wear their earrings.
Sound waves- the wave-liked movements of the air are created when an
object such as drum makes a sound.
Ear canal and auditory canal- sounds waves enter the ear canal or auditory
canal and move into your middle ear, they hit your eardrum and cause it
to vibrate.
Tympanic membrane (eardrum) – thin layer of tissue in the human ear that receives sound
vibrations from the outer air. As tympanic membrane moves, it causes the three small bones to
vibrate. The hammer vibrates first, followed by the anvil, and finally by the stirrup passes the
vibrations to the cochlea in the inner ear.
Cochlea- shaped like the shell of a snail, contains fluid and thousands of special cells that
convert vibrations to messages and reach the auditory nerve.
Auditory Nerve- send messages to the brain.
Semicircular canals- are three loops near the top of cochlea. Whenever you move your head,
the liquid in it also moves. The liquid pushes against the sensory cells that send messages to
your brain.
Hammer, Anvil and Stirrup- the three bones that are connected to one another that also
vibrate.
Common Ear Ailments and First Aid Treatment
Ear infections are the most common illnesses among babies and young children like you.
They are caused by bacteria or viruses. Most often, the infection affects the middle ear.
Infection of the middle ear is called otitis media. The ear canal becomes clogged with fluid and
mucus. This can affect hearing because sound cannot get through the ear canal. Acute otitis
media is characterized by pain, fever, pulling of the ears, and fussiness or distorted hearing.
When you feel the symptoms of ear infection, consult an ear doctor immediately.
Care for the Ears
1. Use a clean and soft towel or cotton buds to clean your outer ear. Do not use sharp or
pointed objects in cleaning the ears.
2. Avoid very loud sounds. Strong vibrations may break the tympanic membrane.
3. Swim in clean water and wear ear plugs to prevent water from getting into your ears.
4. After bathing or swimming, dry your ears gently and thoroughly.
5. If a foreign body accidentally gets into your ear, or whenever your ear is infected, consult
a health professional immediately.

Activity No 1: Draw an Ear on the box and label its parts.
Structure and Function of Your Nose
How can you tell that your mother is frying
chicken in the kitchen without seeing it?
You smell the fried chicken. Very tiny particles
From food mix with the air that enters your nose.
You cannot see these “odor particles” with your
eyes.
Can you identify some objects by their smell?
Look at your nose. The tip of your nose is made of cartilage and skin. Cartilage is a bonelike,
translucent tissue that is softer than a bone. It gives shape to your nose. The two openings of
your nose called nostrils. They contain tiny hairs called cilia that filter dirt and anything else
that might enter your nose. From the nostrils, the air you breathe passes through a bigger space
known as the nasal cavity. The nasal cavity is lined with a layer called mucus which traps dust
and microorganisms in the air. From the nasal cavity, the air passes to the olfactory bulb which
contains olfactory cells. These cells send messages to your brain through the olfactory nerve.
Your brain interprets the messages and tells you what you smell.
Common Nose Ailment and First Aid Treatment
Nosebleed is the most common ailment of the nose. It may be caused by dryness of the nasal
cavity due to heat. It may also be caused by picking the nose too hard.
What should you do if your nose bleeds? The following are first aid tips for nosebleed.
1. If the blood is actively flowing from your nose, lean forward and pinch your nostrils using
your thumb and index finger.
2. Slowly press the pinched part towards your face and breathe through your mouth.
3. Hold your nose in that position for five to ten minutes.
4. If bleeding continues, hold for another five ten minutes.
5. When bleeding is reduced, sit calmly in an upright position.
6. Do not bend your head down. This may cause further bleeding.
7. Apply crushed ice on the nose and cheeks. The cool touch of ice will help stop the bleeding.
8. Avoid blowing your nose while it is bleeding.
9. Consult a doctor if the bleeding does not stop after fifteen to twenty minutes, or if bleeding
occurs more than four times a wek.
Care for your Nose
1. Blow your nose gently to clear it from too much mucus.
2. Use soft cloth in cleaning your nose.
3. Avoid picking your nose with your fingers or sharp objects. Use cotton buds instead.
4. Avoid inhaling dusty air. Cover your nose when passing through dusty areas.
5. Eat food rich of vitamin K.
Structure and Function of Your Tongue
Your Tongue
What would it be like if you could not
Taste anything, or if all food tasted the same?
Maybe you would not enjoy eating. Thank you
Taste buds for helping you enjoy the different
Flavors of food.
Taste buds- tiny structures inside the mouth and on the tongue that detect the taste or flavors of
food.
Receptor Cells- special cells in your taste buds to send messages to your brain. Your brain
interprets the messages and tells you the flavor of what you eat.
Your tongue can detect five basic flavors: sweet, sour, bitter, and umami. Umami is a
Japanese word, meaning tasty, brothy, meaty, or savory.
This flavor is brought about by a chemical called glutamate, which is present in kombu, a J
