Understanding Tessellation in Math 3

This document introduces the concept of tessellation, which involves fitting shapes together to cover a flat surface and create patterns. It outlines methods for forming tessellations through sliding, gliding, and flipping shapes, emphasizing the creation of symmetrical designs. The document also includes exercises for students to practice drawing tessellations based on provided figures.

Mathematics 3

Lesson 2: Tessellation
Objectives:
a. To understand what tessellation is.
b. To determine which turn, flip, or slide creates a given tessellation.
c. To form simple symmetrical designs out of given shapes.

TESSELLATION
It is the fitting together of shapes to cover as flat surface. It creates a pattern of
shapes. To form tessellation, we turn, flip, slide or glide the shapes.

Example:

TRIANGLES

SQUARES

HEXAGONS

Forming Tessellation:

1.) Sliding two triangles to make pattern.

2.) Gliding triangles to make or form another pattern.

3.) It can also form another pattern by flipping or turning the shapes.

By flipping the pattern, notice that the figure form is symmetrical or has
symmetry, meaning the shapes are the same on both sides.

Exercise:
Draw or form the tessellation of the following figures. Use the arrow as your clue
on what or how to form their tessellation.
