CHAPTER 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter deals with the research design, sampling procedures, participants of the

study, setting of the study, research instrument, data gathering procedures and data

analysis plan.

3.1 Research Design

This research study will employ the descriptive method of research. It will be descriptive

research, because the researchers will determine the perceptions of the students of

Marcelina National High School who engage in cigarette smoking, and they will also

determine the different causes and reasons of why the students engage in that habbit.

Furthermore, the researchers will determine also the effects of cigarette smoking towards

health and academic performances of the students through a survey questionnaire using

likert-scale.

3.2 Sampling Procedures

The researchers wil identify first the students of Marcelina National High School who

engage in cigarette smoking. Then they employ purposive sampling procedure, because

the participants they choose will according to their interest to the study.

3.3 Participants of the Study

The participants of the study were seven cigarette smoker students from Marcelina

National High School Senior High School students. The researchers will gather data

through research questionnaire that to be answer by the participants. The participants will

answer the questions of what are the causes, effects, and importance of preventing

cigarette smoking.

3.4 Setting of the Study

This study will take place at Marcelina National High School located at Purok-9 Marcelina

Bayugan City Agusan del Sur, during second term of school year 2019-2020. It is located 8

kilometers away from the city proper. It will take about 30 minutes in order to reach

Bayugan City through riding vehicles. The territorial jurisdiction school which is Lapana

Elementary School and one public school which is the Marcelina National High School.

3.5 Research Instruments

The research questionnaire will use in this study and using likert-scale to determine the

impacts of cigarette smoking among students. The researcher will gather some awareness

that could help the students. All the questions aim to address the concerns regarding to

the argument of the impacts of cigatette smoking among students. This also directs the

motivation that can influence these students behavior to stop them from getting involve

to these substances.

3.6 Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers will administer to determine who are smokers students in Marcelina

National High School, their names will not be exposed in this research for the privacy of

the participants and will have the permission from the respondents themselves.

12
In gathering the data study, the following phases were taken:

The first phase is the individual questionnaire answering. The respondents will be

answering the questions based on the impacts of cigarette smoking to their health and

academic performances.

The second phase is the interpretation and analysis of data. The data and results that will

be gathered from the individual's questionnaire answer will be analyzed and discussed.

3.7 Data Analysis

The researchers made use of this table as their basis in analyzing the verbal description of

the data they gathered.

Challenges in data analysis might include interpreting subjective responses from the Likert-scale questionnaire and ensuring the reliability and validity of the results due to the small sample size of only seven students . Moreover, drawing meaningful conclusions from self-reported data on sensitive topics like smoking can be difficult due to potential biases and inaccuracies .

The study is set in Marcelina National High School, located in a rural area in the Philippines. This setting provides a unique context for understanding cigarette smoking among students, as rural settings might have different socio-economic and cultural factors influencing smoking behaviors compared to urban areas. The school's location, being 8 kilometers from the city proper, could affect access to cigarettes and exposure to smoking influences .

To ensure participant confidentiality, the researchers did not disclose the names of the student smokers in their report. Additionally, they obtained permission from the respondents to participate in the study before gathering data .

The Likert-scale questionnaire aims to determine the impacts of cigarette smoking among students, including their perceptions, the causes and effects of their smoking habits, and the importance of preventing smoking. The instrument is designed to assess student awareness and motivation to cease smoking .

Employing purposive sampling in this study limits the generalizability of the research findings to other student populations. Since the sample consists only of those who are smokers and have a particular interest or relevance to the study, the results may not represent the broader student body or teenagers in different contexts or regions .

The second phase of the study involves analyzing and discussing the gathered data and results from the students' responses to the questionnaires. This phase follows the initial phase of individual questionnaire answering .

A descriptive research design is more suitable for this study because it aims to observe and describe the existing phenomena of cigarette smoking behaviors among students without manipulating any variables. This approach allows the researchers to gain insights into the students' perceptions and deliberate the socio-cultural contexts influencing their smoking habits, which an experimental design might not effectively capture .

The researchers used a purposive sampling procedure by first identifying the students who engaged in cigarette smoking at Marcelina National High School. The selection was based on the participants' interest in the study, ensuring that only those relevant to the research objectives were included .

The study employed a descriptive research design. This method was chosen because the researchers aimed to determine the perceptions of students regarding cigarette smoking, the causes and reasons for their engagement in the habit, and its effects on their health and academic performance .

The study investigates potential impacts of cigarette smoking on students' academic performance. These impacts could include decreased concentration, lower academic achievement due to health issues, and increased absenteeism .
