Design Thinking at IBM

Speaker:
Phil Gilbert
IBM Design General Manager

Hi, I’m Phil Gilbert, IBM Design General Manager.

In 2012, IBM set off to create a sustainable culture of design and design thinking
at a scale that many believe has never before been attempted. The ultimate goal,
to improve the way we serve our users and the clients where those users work.
We do that by changing the way we work. Today, I’d like to introduce to you the
engine at the heart of that transformation, IBM Design Thinking.

In today’s world, our users and clients increasingly demand better user
experiences, delivered at scale faster. As Bridget Van Kralingen has stated, the
last best experience that anyone has anywhere becomes the minimum expectation
for the experience they want everywhere. That’s a high bar, but we have to exceed
it. Our success depends on it. That’s why we created IBM Design Thinking. IBM
Design Thinking is a framework for solving problems at the speed and scale that
modern enterprises like IBM demand. It helps us to better understand the problems
that really matter to users, to generate breakthrough ideas around how to solve
those problems and to stay aligned as we move from idea to outcome.

Today, teams across IBM use IBM Design Thinking all the time to solve problems
big and small. Our sales teams are winning by changing the conversation with our
clients from one about features and requirements to one about users and user
outcomes. Consultants and solution architects are delivering better user outcomes
that transform our clients businesses faster than the competition. We’re seeing a
shift in the way we work across verticals, offerings, and service lines. All the way
from the most senior executives at IBM and our clients all the way to the
practitioners designing, delivering, and building the solutions.

In this course, you’ll learn more about the practice of IBM Design Thinking. You’ll
identify concrete ways to get started in your own work. And you’ll be prepared to
take part in IBM Design Thinking activities with your team and with your clients. As
you take this course, we ask you to reflect on some of the challenges you face in
your work today. Whether it’s forming the right team to respond to an RFP. Maybe
it’s about building stronger, more trusting relationships with your clients and the
users at your clients. Or maybe it’s just keeping a delivery team focused on the
task at hand.

Take the time to reflect on how IBM Design Thinking can help you improve your
business outcomes. As you do, jot down your thoughts and when you complete
this course, you can share what you’ve learned with your colleagues and the larger
community. And you can see also what they’re saying about their own work and
how IBM Design Thinking has helped them. With that, we hope that you have fun,
do good work, and most importantly, to stay in the loop of IBM Design Thinking.

Thank you.
