Literature Synthesis
This section reviews previous work on recent improvements in chicken egg hatching technologies
and fertility detection in general. To boost production numbers and profit, several efforts have been made to
improve hatching efficiency and egg fertility detection. Based on the literature analysis, the following
problem has been identified as a need for further exploration in this study.
Electric incubators are limited in their application since they rely on grid-supplied electricity
(Kalubarme et al., 2018 & Okpagu & Nwosu, 2016). Many studies have been conducted on the design,
construction, and testing of solar photovoltaic egg incubators. However, employing a photovoltaic panel for
heating results in a higher incubator cost (Osanyinpeju, 2018). In addition, the study of (Ahiaba et al., 2015)
devised a passively heated solar poultry egg incubator that uses the sun's passive energy to heat the
incubator. It has a bigger temperature fluctuation because it is exposed to direct sunshine.
The temperature and other incubation parameters are controlled either manually or by opening the
ventilation hole when the temperature rises above the appropriate threshold. The utilization of solar thermal
energy for incubation is introduced, and thermal energy storage is used to store energy for the night (Kanu
et al., 2016). However, temperature, humidity, and turning incubation factors were manually controlled by
opening and closing the hot air duct between the collector and the incubation chamber. This necessitates
the operator's continued presence.
Although a hybrid electric and solar heat assisted egg incubation system has a higher energy-
saving potential, it was designed for large-scale or commercial incubation, and it requires grid-supplied
electricity for partial heating, as well as control and monitoring of parameters during the incubation
process).
Eggs should be subjected to stringent quality control procedures. The egg candling analysis is the
first step in the quality control procedure. Egg candling is a non-destructive method of detecting defects in
eggs by shining light on them. In small and medium poultry plants, this technique is frequently done by
hand. Manual egg candling is prone to human error and can result in health issues for the worker.
