 How much of Wal-Mart’s strategy do you think was planned at the outset, and how
much evolved over time in response to circumstances? What does this suggest to you
about the nature of strategy development?
Answer:

Explanation: Wal-Mart is the promising retail store in the retail market of US. They are mostly
known as a cost leadership organization for providing the low cost product to the customers in
rural areas. They were successful to grasp the trust of customer and other stakeholder’s of the
company through their market driven strategy. They were able set a balance relation between the
business environment and capabilities of the organization. However some strategies are planned
from the beginning, especially to expand to other countries and markets has failed. After
dominating the US market, they can use some of these strategies to help penetrate the markets of
other countries, such as Mexico and South Korea, to successfully expand their presence and
maintain a competitive advantage.

It is very important to apply appropriate strategy in appropriate situation. Wal-Mart failed in

country like South Korea and Mexico it is because of their implication of appropriate strategy in
appropriate business condition. Wal-Mart’s distinctive capabilities won’t be successful in every
country’s business environment. They need perform an effective market research before going
for an international investment. If a strategy is failed a company shouldn’t seat back and see the
failure they should rather plan on how to overcome the failure of the strategy. Wal-Mart’s failure
in some countries also due to the result of staging and timing. An inefficient strategy has been
developed for the overseas market of Wal-Mart that why the company lost their revenue and
pulled out from those country. This forces Wal-Mart to redeveloped and redesign strategies with
proper market research in the overseas market.
